Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Our first Feedback "field trip" went up this weekend but we're heading into the studio soon yet again. We'll be talking about the one and only Heavy Rain this week, so as with other weeks, steer your submitted questions away from Heavy Rain, as Quantic Dream's game will get plenty of discussion.

Remember: you have an increased chance at being picked with a working profile image!

Publishers and Share holders having so much power over developers and whether or not new IP's see the light of day is scary. I am not and idiot, I know money is ultimately the driving force of the industry. What I don't know is weather developers taking a chance on something new and different is going to be dramatically reduced by a risky profit margin. New and different IP's are already few and far between, with the market and economy the way it is, share holders and projected profit seem to cause some risky projects to get the axe. What does survive in this economic climate is sequel heavy saturation, "milking it dry" seems to be the name of game. Now do not get confused I don't think all sequels are bad, in fact some surpass the original. However, I am always cheering when a developer takes a chance and tries something new. It's good for our industry and games in general. Evolution and progression are inevitable, but it's becoming harder and harder for those new and fresh ideas to claw their way to the surface. I can only play Call of Duty and Guitar Hero so many times before I get fed up with deja vu. I know it's hard for us as gamers to justify paying $60 on a game that doesn't have "part 2" in the title, but we must find the guts to do so. If we start buying new IP's publishers will see we are not lemmings and we are ready for progression.....now lets just hope these new and fresh ideas are good.

While games like mass effect ,mass effect 2 (yes I know you have already killed the games by presenting them for the past 3 weeks) are presenting sexuality and other "adult" concepts in their games and trying to further the thought. Apple is doing just the opposite and blocking anything that might be viewed as mildly offensive.

Do you as a group think that companies like Microsoft or Apple or Sony should be blocking anything that is in any way offensive or do you think that it should be left up to the consumers to decide what and when to buy things considering most systems iphone and ipad included have the ability to be strictly controlled by parental controls and the people buying these apps and games are legal thinking adults or have an adult looking over them.

I don't like people losing their jobs, but I don't see what the whole fuss is about the number of studios closing. For example; Red Octane and Pandemic never made anything original and their games didn't sell many copies. Is the video game industry really in trouble anyways and will all be well once this economy resuscitates?

i like the rest of the world cant afford to buy every game that sounds good god of war 3 will probably be the only game i actually buy this year because i have a game fly acount so i can play every game i want and not go broke. my question can game rental services eventually ruin the game industry? getting unlimited games for less than half the price of one game why ould i buy games when i can rent them for as long as i want. with less people buying games the developers will make less money and o out of buisnes

I know everyone is asking Heavy Rain question, but the one I have had has been on my mind for quite some time now. I realize Heavy Rain is being describe as an 'interactive narrative' from what i have played (demo) and what I have read on the game that seems to be a very fair interpretation.

Do you think that this style of gaming is the "next step" of the old point and click games?

Nintendo has two distinct audiences that share very few games. The hardcore Nintendo fans play Zelda and Metroid, the casuals play Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Wii Play. The only games that both groups play are Mario games: Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy.
I don't think that Nintendo can sell another system to the Wii Sports-ers of the world, so how can Nintendo further bridge the gap between the two groups? What kind of game would lead Super Mario Galaxy players into Nintendo's other franchises like Zelda and Metroid?

Downloadable content is growing in popularity, I enjoy being able to download arcade games or movies for my 360, however this worries me. Will game publishers in the near future (say 1-4 years) start pushing or even forcing games as downloadable only to increase a possible profit?

with the release of all the games that rely on multiplayer, do you think more companies should start doing a beta testing for their games?

with games that have had a beta doesn't seem to have a problem for the multiplayer component as opposed to the ones that do have a beta. i was wondering if you could clarify this for me

Alright I tried to get an profile image but it has been saving for like 20 mins.

With all the recent buzz about Motion Controlled and 3D gaming, do you see these 2 technologies being incorporated with each other? Because it seems as though the ultimate goal of evolution in gaming is to fully immerse the player in the 3D virtual reality. Blinding the user from what is real and what is imaginary, thus creating a truly immersive experience.

I was very disheartened when Six Days in Fallujah was dropped because I've always loved games where it's story before action. I'm very excited for Heavy Rain and I was wondering if you think more games with de-emphasized combat are in the horizon?

i know that i dont have an avatar, but just bear with me. So sense we are trying to steer away from Heavy Rain, I will move to another topic. Where is Valve, they give us Left for Dead 1 and and quickly give us LD2 ( both good games dont get me wrong ) but where is their glory games. HL2 episode 3, Portal 2. Its just my opinion, that we should have got some of that before LD2. Just needed to get that out.

The role of storytelling has been rapidly expanding within the game industry over the last couple years(i.e. games such as Mass Effect 2 and and Bioshock) With the role of storytelling expanding within the game industry, do you think that developers and publishers will eventually put as much resources into writing and storyline development as movies and television does? And if so, do you think the game industry will harvest the creativity of writers to create a new brand of creative storytelling entirely intended for use in video games?

I highly regret selling back my copy of Borderlands after beating it twice and buying the first DLC. I did not expect Gearbox to add so much content. Do you think other studios will follow Gearbox and keep adding to their product instead of coming out with straight sequels? Is Borderlands just the exception? With so many gamers now having access to DLC, will this Gearbox model become the norm?

Do you think that the gaming industry is being taken over by adult gamers? As a teen that can't get many M rated games I don't want all of these games i.e. Crackdown, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect, C.O.D. etc. I understand that there are adult gamers but I still want games and like childrens movies I don't want these EXTREMLY dulled down titles.

Do you think that the consoles will be called by the titles that are on their systems and is this bad? i.e. Wii E PS3 T 360 M

How much more advancement can be in video games and if this isn't much do you think developers will have to be more inovative?

Do you think non casual gamers didn't make a good investment on the Wii?

After dice is their enough inovation in the gaming industry?

Are all these shooters bad for the image of the gaming industry?

(I am not a fan boy)I've noticed that the xbox (and recently the Wii) have been mentioned a lot in pop culture and not the PS3. I think that this is because more adults own these systems. First I think this is sort of unfair no matter what system, also this does sort of say how we treat kids in our socicety (I'm Canadian). Do you agree?

Just to end thank you for this show and I love it every week.

I Believe that the G4 network has started to stray farther and farther away from gamer oriented shows. They hav started to have long hours of shows like "Cops" and "Cheaters", and endless hours of "Ninja Warrior". Now don't get me wrong I like Ninja Warrior, but after the third or fourth continuous episode it can get on your nerves. I Believe one of the topics they should talk about on Feedback is how it is difficult to get high ratings and have shows that gamers in general will tune into, and take a break from playing there xbox or ps3. For example remember the good old days of icons, judgement day, and g4tv the show. Which was basically feedback but was on G4. I don't necessarily know who decides what gets put on the station be it the main executives of the network or how much thought is put into the programming schedule, but it's not all bad and one such example is The Movies That Don't Suck segment which is really good, and i believe to be a success. So that's my rant about it and I hope it will be a topic on feedback, peace out guys.

Can a game series like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. that is just so different from the "AAA" titles continue to grow? Because it seem while each new game released in the series is better than the last, with the recently released Call of Pripyat being very good and got a 4 out of 5. But the release of each game seems to more and more down-played or unnoticed. I guess what I'm saying is will we see a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and can companies(like GSC Game World) with smaller budgets like this still compete in the gaming market when games like Fallout, Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty, and etc. can have the companies behind them throw millions behind "their AAA" games?

What do you think Sony's Expectations are for Heavy Rain? They know that they are taking a risk calling it a "gamble". In your opinion do you think it will sell better than expected?
