Even though we're getting Dead Space 2 and it sounds like we're getting a follow-up to Mirror's Edge, Electronic Arts COO John Schappert, who just recently joined the company from Microsoft, admitted at DICE 2010 that EA didn't do either of those games justice from a marketing perspective.
"These were good titles," said Schappert. "I don't think that we gave them the marketing support that they deserved. ... I think these titles deserve more."
Schappert also admitted that marketing can't solve everything and because consumers are more savvy these days, even big marketing pushes couldn't save GoldenEye: Rogue Agent and Catwomen.
We're probably all on the same page with this one.

I never got to play Mirror's Edge, but I bought Dead Space not too long after it launched for the full $60 price. I had written it off, but after seeing the great reception it got I decided to give it a try. In my opinion it was worth every penny, as it turned out to be one of my favorite games of 2008. I'm so glad they are making a sequel. I just hope they don't mess up it up by straying away from the horror elements.

dead space was and still is by far my favorite game of all time. to simply put it the combat was amazing EA really did a great job of making it so you never had to be in a pause screen with the holo-backpack. and the story line i felt was great i know that the hole idea of a set of ruins found on a planet then something going wrong is nothing new but to me dead space put a great twist on it. the weapons were amazing and both funny at the same time what with half of them being repair tools. the enemys were very inventive for once a head shot or shooting an enemy in the chest could actually make things worse then simply killing them. when i herd that the next dead space was coming out on the wii i was very upset. this is one of those games that was great but really didnt get the marketing it needed for people to know about it. im still holding out hope for a dead space 2 on the 360

Mirrors Edge was my favorite game of that year and one of my top favorites in games overall. Deadspace was also a very good title which I enjoyed. Im very happy to here about the potential for a Mirrors Edge 2 as I am very interested and invested in that story.

I Really enjoyed Mirrors Edge but Played the demo of dead space and didn't enjoy it at all.

I think the only real problems I had with Mirror's Edge were the cut scenes and the seemingly short gameplay. The DLC was FANTASTIC though, I like when a developer takes risks and has a meaningful concept they are working from. Even if the risk doesn't necessarily work out like they had hoped it's refreshing to try something new.
My point with the cut scenes was if they wanted a stylistic approach with animated cut scenes, they should have picked a style that fit their whole concept. Gameplay revolved around smooth, flowing, freeform, running...meanwhile the animation was jerky and rigid...complete opposites.
Really would have been nice if it was longer...but hey it's a first attempt, they just need to outdo themselves this next time around.

I thought EA did a pretty good job with marketing Dead Space. I saw commercials all over tv as well as various sites. It wasn't quite as much with Mirror's Edge, but that was also a kind of love it or hate it game anyways.

i still haven't played through the whole game and i've had it for almost a year

I think they should do away with advertising altogether. I base my purchase decisions around what I see the LEAST of, meaning I rarely buy brand name anything and won't buy a cell phone, new car, Geico, or most fast food. I'm not supporting that annoyance.
With that said you never see ads for the right games. Just BS like Madden or another cookie cutter FPS. Instead what they should do is save their money and focus on creating a good game. ME and DS are great examples - fun games from a company I assumed went stagnant and stopped trying new things. When a good game makes it to market word-of-mouth is all the advertising one needs. It's free and reaches all the right people. I never saw ads for most of the games I have.

I LOVE Mirror's Edge! (And it's even better to play now after nvidia got its driver act together. lol) The only problem for me was the price -- while this title looks incredible, has a cool story, and it fun to play, $50 (PC) for such a short game was just a bad idea. I got when it hit $40, but it should have been released at $30, and lucky folks now can get it for $20 which is definitely worth not missing.

dead space was awesome but i only paid 25 bucks new for it a few months ago and i dont think that i would pay 60 bucks for it even if advertising was better i just think there are titles that people are always going to buy on day one for example halo, zelda, gow, and then all the other ones people will wait a while so that the price goes down or wait to find it used. i dont buy games used because i like my collection and dont want to buy a game some one else has already messed up but i have been known to wait 6 months to a year for the price to go down. its ashame that new ips dont sell as well as already established blockbusters but im positive that dead space 2 will sell better than the first because now people know its out there and now for some people it will be that day one purchase.

Dead Space was easily one of my favorite games this gen. I originally rented it around release time, and got it for last X-mas to replay it. Mirror's Edge was not bad, but it had it's problems. I'd be willing to try a sequel because it has a lot of potential.
For me it comes down to money though. I've been in and out of employment for the last year, so I don't take as many risks on new IPs anymore. I was just telling a friend last night that if I had a job, I'd own the Bioshock series. Its sad, because I've always loved trying to support new IPs. Now I've just become the thing I hate, a sequel buying douche.

I bought Dead Space as soon as I learned of it through Xbox Live, Game Informer, and through the EA website which I subscribe to. Soon I found myself at my local gamestop reserving it after watching all the Video Docs for it. But the light was taken from it by other games that came out during that fall like Gears of War 2, Saints Row 2, and Fallout 3. All these were anticipated sequels (yes I did anticipate Saints Row 2), other games that came out were TNA Wrestling and Lego Batman. So how was an original IP suppose to shine with no marketing on television and no advertisement? I loved Dead Space, I played it and it took me back to games like Silent Hill 1 and 2, even the first Manhunt, not to mention RE4. I felt scared and the strategic dismemberment was and awesome innovation to 3rd person shooters, the HUD system was also great the way it was implemented to the characters back, and the upgrading for your weapons and gadgets kept you coming back for more.

Dead Space was scary, atmospheric and fun to play, but there's no getting around it: that game was pretty boring, but loved the controls. Hated the upgrade system and the fact that you always knew where to go with that line thing he did with his hand (which looked cool) took away much of the sensation that I was in control. It was a good game that was missing a couple of things that would've truly made it great.
Lost interest half way through the game, But I'll finish eventually. Maybe the story gets better, but I doubt it. Regardless, they definitely do deserve another chance to get it right.

eh...Mirror's Edge was mediocre. There's a reason no one else ever did first person platforming: it's a pain. The game just wasn't fun, that's all there is to it. You spent most of your time wandering around looking for something to jump on to get to the next area.
Dead Space was a very good game, but is that enough to get someone to spend $60 on it? No...publishers need to understand that just having a good game doesn't translate into sells. You need the game to be imoprtant to players. Dead Space wasn't an important game. Gamers felt like they could skip it and miss nothing, and that's exactly what they did.
Games with good co-op, versus multiplayer, huge sandbox environments, innovative gameplay...those are the games that people need to play. Dead Space was a linear corridor shooter that was similar to Resident Evil and Bioshock. Why would anyone NEED to buy that?

I still play mirrors edge! I want mirrors edge 2 now!

The only part i agreed with that whole article was dead Space was a good under-appreciated Game
I didn't even play it till recently on the PS3.
And found as such an disturbing environment and New level zombie-scary-alien nasty that make you jump when they jump at you.
True that the game wasn't even advertised...at least from what i remember i only heard about this game from word-of-mouth from a friend..
mirror's edge i played but that same thing only heard about it on x-play review...
but that to me wasn't as much of a well mentioning experience..
P.S.
Dead Space on the Wii was also really enjoyable

come on ea give us mirrors edge 2 this year
dripgoss
i loved deadspace - mirrorsedge was meh to me. but i do remember those games coming out at the same time as other big ones. it might be more a lesson of timing not marketing?

I personally cannot wait for Mirror's Edge 2. I will gladly wait a year for this game. I play Mirror's Edge almost everyday, beating it every time. I am still finding new routes to use. Come on EA, Mirror's Edge 2 before November 23.
