Blizzard may steal the free time from millions of people, but yesterday the company proved it gives back as well. Blizzard donated over a million dollars to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. (Check out that awesome oversized novelty check!) The company handed over half the funds generated by the in-game sale in November and December of a special World of Warcraft pet, the Pandaren Monk.
Along with the cold, hard lucre, Blizzard gave 15 World of Warcraft playing wish kids and their families an "exclusive learning experience" with the World of Warcraft development team, including an inside look at how the game is created.
“Thanks to Blizzard Entertainment and World of Warcraft players around the world, we will be able to grant the heartfelt wishes of even more courageous children with life-threatening medical conditions,” said David Williams, Make-A-Wish Foundation of America president and chief executive officer. “This generosity is helping us bring hope, strength and joy to children when they – and their families – are facing an unimaginably difficult time in their young lives.”

Isnt this part a little more important than just saying they gave money away, regardless of charging for a pet, this part is satisfying.

That was cool of them to donate to such a great cause.

With roughly 10 million players currently subscribed at an average rate of 12.95 a month, their donated amount of 1,110,000 equals about... 1/12 of their monthly income in subscriptions alone. With that in mind, not even counting their outside merchandise and licensing, the only thing I have to say is...
Common Blizzard, you can do better than that.
Now, if they donated 50% of one month's earning OR donated 1,110,000 every month for the rest of the year, THAT would be a note-worthy donation deserving of praise. But at this rate, Blizzard is more likely to spend more money telling people about their donation than the actual amount they donated.

Good to know a place like Blizzard that's intent on wasting lives still cares about people that have them

doesnt it just make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

As far as I can remember this is a capitalist country, for the most part, and they did not have to donate any of that money if they didn't want to. Be happy with what people do decide to donate, or if you are gonna give them flak for what they do donate what will compel people to donate again.

So sick of people whining about paying to play WoW! If you don't like it, then don't play! And if you don't play, then why are you so concerned with what other people choose to spend their money on? There are lots of other games out there that don't cost a subscription fee. Plenty of people clearly like the game enough to pay the money they're asking. Blizzard is a for-profit company, and regardless of what you think it *should* cost to play the game, it costs them a lot of money to maintain the quality of the product that they provide to their players. It's not like they forced everybody in the game to buy the pet! They used it as an opportunity to generate some more funds, and I think it's nice that they chose to give back.

My family just went to disney from Make-a-Wish and it was a terrific experience. For Blizzard to donate that is great. Make-a-wish and Give kids the world give to kids and there families such a wonderful time its good to see that more families will have a chance to do it because of blizzard.

I thought it was shameful when they first announced the promotion, and I think it's even more shameful now that they're posing with a giant check.
Charging $10 a head for an in-game pet in WoW is bad enough, but giving only half of the proceeds for charity is just inexcusable, especially since they gave away free pets for both the WoW anniversary (the Onyxia Whelpling) and for the transition of accounts to Battle.net (Mr. Chilly).
If they can give these pets away for free, why do the sleazy thing and hand Make-a-Wish a check for over a million dollars, while they keep over a million for themselves.
You've fleeced your players enough, Blizzard. Reach back into that wallet and give the rest of the money to a charity that deserves it.

I wonder why they are doing this now and not before o_O wasn't there news that they weren't getting that many new players?

So they donated part of the money that they wipe their collective asses with.
