Star Trek Online

Star Trek has a history with video games that goes back more than thirty years. So when a huge MMO version (Star Trek Online) hits the market, we have to check it out. Tom Chick commanded a starship in the game, and brought back a review:

"MMOs: The latest, most profitable frontier. These are the voyages of the starship you will probably give some silly name to like USS Terd Burgler or USS Riker Is A Douche…or maybe just USS Normandy because you can't be bothered to think up something else. Its subscription-based-but-with-an-option-for-micropayments mission: To find the clearly labeled objectives on small worlds; to seek out and play through a whole lot of cool ship combat; and to go with mild determination and decent graphics where many MMOs have not really gone before (At least not in any meaningful sense; don't get me started on Star Wars: Galaxies.)..."

"No Thank You" Not to say its a bad MMO, just was never a Star Trek Fan. I spoken to a few people about the game...they had no bad words to say, but then again they had no good words about it either.

I've been waiting for a Star Trek MMO for YEARS now and I've got to say, I'm enjoying STO.

While I'm upset that they went with the "everyone's a captain" route and don't make you work your way up the ranks on someone else's ship, I can see why they did that as it probably wouldn't be really fun doing meaningless "go repair this" missions.

I really enjoy the space combat and ship customization parts of it. There is a lot of weaknesses, especially how everything is instanced and the traveling sections are awful, but it has a ton of potential to become all around awesome.

I've been playing this game since open beta, and now granted my MMO history is limited to a year of Guild Wars and about a week of WOW (hated it), I love this game, I love it so much I was on of those silly people who pre-ordered the collectors edition just for the original Enterprise and her blue phaser beams.

Now I do believe that it is way to early for a review of the game, if you read the STO forums you can see that, being a freshly released MMO, people sure do complain a lot. The game has content for pretty well lvs 1-30, once you reach admiral there isn't much as the game has not been out that long for players to have gotten that far into the game, now there are a lot of power levelers out there that skip by most of the content get to the end and go "This game sucks there is nothing to it" Well duh ya idiots.

For now I would leave it at this game has the potential to be up there with WOW in time, right now it is still finding it's Nacelles so to speak, and it is going to be a bumpy road called trial and error. Personally I will stick with it all the way as it is the only MMO I like so far.

Give it a chance but keep in mind it is a young one and they are still building and fixing it as they go.

    Live long and prosper!

P.S. then again I didn't become a lifer due to fear of servers shutting down and being screwed out of a lot of money....paranoia mostly lol.
