History is repeating itself in Rapture -- at least the PC version of Rapture. Fans were peeved when BioShock was released on the PC and didn't feature proper widescreen support. Instead, the game was cropping a 4:3 image, blocking valuable visual real-estate. The same problem has hit with BioShock 2, but unlike the original, 2K Games is acknowledging it up front.
"Yes, there's a problem," said 2K Games community manager Elizabeth Tobey on the Cult of Rapture forums. "Yes, a fix is on the way, yes the view will expand horizontally for you widescreen gamers. I wanted to let you know as soon as I could - so stay tuned for the details."
Not sure what the issue is? The screen shot above shows what's happened. If the problem wasn't pointed out, you might not notice -- but once you see it, you can't unsee it.

A) I have to agree with bassmasterson; although there may still be quite a few 4:3 monitors out there being used by gamers (very high res and good quality monitors are hard to let go). However, anyone who has picked up a new monitor in the past 3 years, has most likely picked up a 16:10 screen, or opted to use a LCD or Plasma TV for 1080P, 16:9 viewing.
QA should have picked this up. As much as I admire Elizabeth Toby for jumping out on the front lines to take the flak, in both Bioshock games; the last minute bugfix that she claims caused this, is a crock of excrement. If you change the code of a game at the last minute, that means you should have to QA every part of the game that that code would effect. If there was a last minute "bugfix" that could have had an impact on aspect ratio, how could they have missed it? My guess is the same as many have stated. 2K was under pressure to get this out on time and decided to fix it in a patch. Why it's taking so long, baffles me. There are already ways to adjust FOV by editing config settings. That still isn't the solution though. I've stopped playing until the patch comes out. I just got my 23" 16:9 TV/Monitor for Christmas, and I want to play this the way it should be played.
I know that stuff happens, but twice. Damn!!

Does anyone still even own a 4:3 TV or monitor? get with it 2K.
tommy_deathdoll
wouldn't this have been noticed by the QA Testers? really??

you've gotta be effing kidding me...again?

I didn't notice it among the billions of crashes that I was plagued with when I first got the game installed on my computer.
I since fixed it (thankfully) but I'm not alone out there.
And I didn't notice anything as far as the aspect ratio, and I'm using a 1920x1080 monitor. I'll be sure to compare notes when I get back from the office

If I didn't view FPS games using a joypad as an abomination I'd be tempted to play this on the 360 just to get away from the crashes! 2 so far in 30 minutes of gameplay!

@cryfordawn
I agree that games shouldn't be rushed, should be better tested and the same problem really should have been fixed. Bioshock 2 wasn't rushed it was originally supposed to come out last year. Also it wasn't made by the same people.
LarcenousLaugh
I would think that a list of bugs/errors from the first game would have been used as a checklist to make sure they were not repeated. Oops.
Thunderkleize_
Ummm..... Different people made Bioshock 2.
cryfordawn
Why has this company had the same problem with both games, and the exact same problem. How do you not learn from your first mistake? This is the reason why games should not be released until fully tested and stop being rushed. This is a no brainer tech issue that should have been easy to catch if beta tested at all

Hmmm.....
Yay for the incoming fix, most appreciated.
That being said--did someone forget their morning coffee through the entire development time of BioShock 2? I mean, considering they made the same mistake with the original BioShock...
Though that would make sense if they kind of used the original as a templet for their new installment of Rapture, as opposed from starting from the absolute ground up--but still, it's obvious that they got complaints about the widescreen in the first game... I dunno--still can't complain much, getting to frolic back in Rapture, no matter the issues that may be present--is worth it.
Apsalus07
They didn't have widescreen back when Rapture was built, I bet they still use the original aspect ratio. Explains the bork.
