Heavy Rain

You're going to be hearing a lot about Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain between now and its release on the 23rd. Everyone has been playing the demo since last week, and our review is up today. The game tries to do something different with the concept of video games; just check out this video for a look at how different it is:

Exclusive Extended Heavy Rain "Blue Lagoon" Gameplay Video »

Any game that features an asthma inhaler mini-game is not a typical experience, wouldn't you agree?

Heavy Rain's unique story-telling style and gameplay lead to a couple strong, pre-release reactions from gamers: Either "I must play this game! It's different from everything else I've played!" or "This game is different from everything else I've played! Why would I be interested in that?"

I am firmly in the "must-play" camp. What about you?

QTE or not this game looks to be groundbreaking all across the board. The endless possiblities that the game gives you, the amazing graphics, etc. i havent played any of the demo or any DLC, to make the game fresher when i pick it up tomorrow, but with all the buzz about it online and so on its easy to find video/commentary about it
if it wasnt for GOW3 i think this would be in Heavy contention for GOY

Based on the demo alone this is easily going to be GOTY. and to think all my cash was gonna go towards MLB:10 and GOW3 but who needs baseball when the PS3 hits a home run like this..TY Sony for making me feel that my faith in you was justified....GET A P23 IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE ONE FOR THIS TITLE ALONE!!!

I personally am very excited for this game and the reviews i've read have been great. I'm hearing alot about how some people the the QTE's are pretty much a joke and other opinions but i beg to differ. I think for the style of storytelling it fits perfectly. For example, not every comic book in the world follows the formula. You have traditional american, indie, and japanese comics ect. Different comics use panels to help chance the pacing for their story making even the most mundane feel dramatic. Shounen and Shoujo manga are great examples sine shounen has alot more action to smooth the pacing while shoujo uses slash panels, tones, and dramatic shots to create more action. it's all comes down to how you perceive a individual game that you'll be able to see the bigger picture.

I'm really concerned by all the claims about this game. Never been done before? Really? Indigo prophecy and shenmue say hello. Has this industry become so desperate to promote games as art, so hungry for something new, that they are willing to rewrite their own history? Even if you push the argument that its never been done to this level, it doesn't change the fact that it has been done before. True, it reaches a level of graphical fidelity not seen before in this type of game. However that is a product of the graphical power available in today's hardware, and not a revolution. If shenmue where to be released on today's hardware it would have just as grand a pallet. As for the revolutionary game play, I'm not sure how increasing the presence of the mundane translates into fun. That of course is a subjective view so I'll move on.
What bothers me most about the sort of apple reality distortion field the enthusiast press has placed over this game, is that it overlooks other games that truly do present innovation, either in whole or in part. Consider silent hill shattered memories. That game did many things not seen before and yet unlike heavy rain, instead of being shown for its innovation, it was pretty much covered as, well here's silent hill on the wii. I realize some sites did cover it a bit more in depth, however I'm speaking in broad strokes here. A little more fairness and a lot less short attention span from the press going forward would be nice.

I remember back in the day when I was a youngin some of my favorite books to read were the choose your own adventure stories, this game seems like an interactive version of one of those stories. I love the sense of endless possibilities, like one of your characters dying and that ending their role in the story. I'm sure the game will have some minor flaws but so did those books but I enjoyed them just the same.

I'm hoping this is the first of many more original, story driven games instead of rehashing the same old first person shooters with different skins, "ALIENS ARE COMING!!! SHOOT THEM!!" or the other option "WE'RE GOIN TO A NEW PLANET!!! SHOOT ALL THE ALIENS!!" Been there, done that, got the t-shirt on PS Home, haha

The QTE moments arent simply there just for the sake of being there. Often times the QTE is to engage the player as if they themselves were there. The QTE directly relates to the movement the character is doing. If you go to open the door of a car, you pull back on the stick in the motion it would be to pull back the handle. If you go to bash a guy in the back with a lamp, you pull back on the stick, then rotate it in the direction the character would make for pulling the lamp back to increase momentum, then actually swinging it. If you go to kick open a door, you jolt the control forward to initiate the kickdown. If you have somebody in a choke hold, you move the sixaxis up/down in the movement of strangling somebody. If you dont like realism, then fine, but dont flame a game, for attempting at it.

    Immediate buy for me!

Tmidiman brings up a good point..if this game doesnt sell well, since its been in development for so long and so much money has been invested in it, will it be one of those that sits on the shelf for two years at full price? i hope for the developers sakes though it does really well for them..looks like an interesting game..but like Tmidiman i may have to wait till a price drop..just too risky a purchase at full price for me..

This is one day that I regret not having a PS3... This people is a must play game, if only beacuse of story and how its told. Its a movie? Hell yes, and very good for what I've seen. Once I get my PS3 Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 are my first two choices

Walking around the club reminded me of Assassin's Creed. Looks like an interesting game though.

I'm always excited to see developers take risks when designing games; new ideas lead to new innovations which lead to all new ways to enjoy "interactive entertainment". For that I'm excited about Heavy Rain.

That being said, Indigo Prophecy left me feeling rather disappointed and while it appears that Heavy Rain has improved on the faults of IP I'm still skeptical that it will provide a truly satisfying playing experience. As much as many people have said they're not too excited about the environmental interactions, that's what I'm most interested in. If the second half of the game falls into the "quicktime event after quicktime event" pitfall that Indigo Prophecy suffered from I suspect I would be less than enthused.

I not only played the downloaded demo, I also played that january heavy rain scene in qore. From one of the choices I made, I'm interested to see how far that character goes in the game.

The demo was awesome. I couldn't believe how great it was. It's the perfect marriage of Interactive Fiction text games from the 80's, and their spiritual successor the point and click type games that never could quite capture the IF text drama.

This I believe is finally the first IF fiction in the 3d world. Yes we've had attempts before, but this really seems like it hit that 20 year long 'high expectations' that games could never until now reach.

Multiple pathways should be unreal. In the demo there are multiple ways this happens. I've counted 4 on the hooker scene. (1. not giving your card 2. speaking wrong so she doesn't tell you things 3. speaking right and getting to hear those things 4.when you kick the guy's butt - he's says he'll see you later (but doesn't when you get your butt kicked)

I also noticed the demo had areas that looked like should be reached, but couldn't (probably demo restrictions...entering the bathroom...maybe to take off clothes and bang the hooker before you tell here you ain't a client???).

Also they won't let you in on the

Knocking on all the doors was cool too. I was wondering if knocking on the wrong one maybe gets me shot or something? I guess I'll find out in the game.

Well this 31 year old gamer has been waiting for a game like this for a long time. The animation is immersive, it's got that film noire look to it, and the multiple pathway possibilities imo seem to be the best since the IF days.

It truly is a visual interactive fiction game (VIF?). One I'm finally glad arrived. We needed a new/rehashed genre game on the market, and this delivers.

Also it seems if you pre-order you get the 1st dlc free.
