I like Mass Effect 2 so much, I'd marry it if I lived in Vermont, but I really don't like the on-screen text. Don't get me wrong: The writing is top-notch, but I can't frickin' read the stuff half the time because it's too small and the font is hard to read. And I have an HD TV, too. So I have to get up and sit closer to my TV to read the codex and junk. Not cool. (Man, my problems in life are pretty serious!)
My text issues pale in comparison to saps who are playing the game on SD TVs. According to many gamers, it's very, very difficult to read the text in ME2 if your TV is SD instead of HD.
BioWare is not going to fix this problem, posting this on their official forums:
"We understand that on some Standard Definition TVs the smallest text in Mass Effect 2 can be difficult to read. While this was not an intentional result, it was a byproduct of enhancements to the user interface.
After investigating potential solutions, we have determined that while this issue does affect a small portion of SDTV owners, we are unable to resolve it for Mass Effect 2 through a title update. However, we have taken note of this issue and will take it into consideration as we plan future games in the Mass Effect franchise."
While we're talking hard-to-read: How about putting a dark outline on dialog text? That way, if I'm talking to some alien who's standing against a brick wall, I can read the dialog. Have any of you guys had similar problems? Or is the real issue here the fact that I'm slowly going blind?

I noticed a lot of games for the PS3 and XBox 360 have REALLY small text. Only the Wii maintains a comfortable font to read consistently throughout all its games. It seems Nintendo carefully considers its audience (soccer moms, grandparents, and old farts like me). Microsoft and Sony are only concerned with what looks good; i.e., tiny text looks cooler than large clunky text.
Velocity2k
That was one of the issues I had with ME 1; I had a 27" SD TV and, sometimes, the text was impossible to read. It was incredibly frustrating. I played ME 2 on a 47" HD TV: problem solved. I had no problem reading even the smallest text (even: "Saving: please do not turn off your XBox 360" (or something like that). I can only conclude that ME was designed for play on HD sets or PCs.

Too many people on consoles. Mouse & Keyboard is way better for shooters and RTS. Plus u can do what ever you want with your graphics settings either in-game or via your gfx card's control panel.

I use a SD TV and the text is small but I can manage to read it since my living room isn't that large so I'm close to the tv but my only problem is that some of the text is light orange so its gets hard to read whole paragraphs in the codex.

I'm having trouble reading the text, too, especially when talking to Mordin in the Normandy's lab. By the way, I live in Vermont and you can't marry a videogame here, either. I know we all love ME2, but marrying an inanimate object is just wrong.

THIS IS GREAT! considering that i'm LEGALLY BLIND I have always felt video games are the ONLY place where I have an even playing field. Sure i have to sit close to the TV for problems due to eyesight since birth but it's never stopped me from enjoying a game....until now. I powered through EVERYTHING in mass effect 2 and still I had the same problem. I'm playing it again and still notice the small print. YES I am on a SD TV but still....I am glad bioware will fix this for the next one. I liked how Modern Warfare 2 had a feature to align the TV to the screen before you play. :) thanks Bioware for at least taking it into consideration.

I have to agree with that the text is hard as hell to read, i got 20/20 vision so you guys saying your eyes are bad are just stupid. I have to play it on an 18 inch SD TV and its not the text in the conversations thats bad and it is a petty thing to gripe about but the codex mine as well not exist and i cant tell what i get at the end of missions unless i look at the pictures. In my opinion the hud, text, and codex from ME1 was tons better. Still an awesome game though just wish i could get a new tv sooner rather than later

I wonder what some of these peeps would be saying if it were optimized for SD tv's and the HD users got fuzzy images.....
thesilentmole
Yeah that text is ridiculous. Some of it is way to small.
And... okay I'm going to say it... "enhanced" your UI? By removing a clear and constant view of one's health? By removing a radar that helps me locate all enemies at all times? By adding giant pop ups (that can't be read from a distance) that just hang out on the right side of the screen for a while and take up a bunch of unnecessary space? By having a tiny, unreadable action box at the top? That UI was a severe downgrade from the first game, and was a bad UI in general.

weel i havent played ME2 yet, thats only because i want to play the 1st one. and its not all tat good, so the second one better be 10 times better. if not well back to playstation3.
Adampro123
I Don't have the game but if i had that problem it would be a pretty big problem beings reading is one of the main parts in mass effect 2.

@ZombieElite sorry dude but thats by far the worst comparison I've ever seen. For one thing programmers are expected to program games for ALL definitions, ESPECIALLY low definition considering the people who own low def tv's VASTLY outweigh the ones who don't. (also its a hoop for basketball, not a goal).
ZombieElite
If you buy a basketball to play with in your front yard, And your basketball goal is crooked so your experience sucks. Would you complain to the company that made the basketball goal?

Really affected my enjoyment of the game, I have a 17" SD TV and was right up to the screen at times or simply skipped text if I didnt think it was vital. I never mastered biotic powers as I couldnt read the instructions. I had to give up on Dead Rising and The Saboteur for the same reason.....when will game developers understand not everyone has a 50" HD TV! Very annoying!
kapassikey
i know this problem all to well. from star ocean, to dead rising, to infinite undiscovery. and what makes me more upset is i don't know what, why do game makes make the text SO small in games where reading details is very important to know whats going on? its so frustrating that despite all this technology we have, why can't their be a way to adjust to size of the text or just make it bigger and possible maybe see through to begin with? i really wish someone can answer that if there is an answer
bizarroswerdna
Seriously do you all have eagle eyes or something? 27" flat screen SDTV can't see jack squat. No idea what I'm reading half the time. I gave up on the codex, pointless, utterly pointless. They should offer a non-forced text update.
ZombieElite
I dunno man. I switched between a 22' monitor and a 42' tv back and forth and had no problems reading it. and I'm night blind. and their is a black bevel on the text. I mean it only kinda sucks when theirs an asari behind the text that's the same color as the text, but theirs still the outline that helps and they move the characters and camera angle around a lot to help with it. This is like the most petty gripe for what may be the best game of 2010, and I'm night blind, AND lost my glasses a month ago.
Canid117
I noticed this problem too. Pisses me off whenever I have to put my contacts in to play a video game from a comfortable distance from my TV.
NuBeatz
Nowadays, game developers make these games for folks with 50" screens not thinking about those of us who still can't afford the HD screens everyone and their mama wants us to have. Sorry....we're STILL in a recession!!! :P
NuBeatz
Text is kinda small but readable. I actually sit close to my tv to read since my eyes are bad I have no choice. But yes, the text is kinda small but not Dead Rising small. It's manageable and it can be a pain but it's not critical. Welcome the Reapers!!!!!!
