Metroid: Other M To Show Samus'

When you think of Tecmo’s Team Ninja, or Nintendo’s beloved Metroid series for that matter, emotional narrative isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind. But it appears that’s what gamers can expect from the next installment in the acclaimed franchise, Metroid: Other M.

Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto recently told Famitsu (via Andria Sang) that while the Wii title will feature combat reminiscent of the original "2D jump action game,” it will also differentiate itself in one clear way.

"This time we're strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She's a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It's an action game, but it's capable of having a clear emotional side."

It will be interesting to see if the developers can pull of the action/emotional moments dance, especially given the caliber of combat the game is promising to deliver, but it will be even more interesting to see how Metroid fans react to it.

On that note: Are you ready for a more emotional Samus?

LOVE. IT. But... i do have a version of samus already in my head, as im sure many do, considering she's always been so silent - i just hope they dont go in the total opposite direction with her than what ive always thought of the character

I don't get why people would judge a game devopler like Team Ninjia in how they can convey emotion in a character such a Samus.Thats like saying a person that plays for the football team is an airhead and can't display intelligence.I believe with Nintendo at their side and having pulled great resources with their other games we will see a new and fresh experience coming from Samus's character. This can result in a gaming experince simliar to that of God of War. Where we see more then just some bland protagonist going from getting item A to item B to advance the story.feeling for the character in game can really highten the gaming experience as a whole.

Does adding an emotional side, or additional back story, translate to a lot more cut-scenes?
I welcome depth in a character, more so than even the story, (in a game I am a character within a story so the character is more important because it is more personal), but I do not want to disrupt the action or rhythm of the game.

I must admit that Team Ninja being in charge of Samus's image worries me a little too. Team Ninja's traditional portrayal of women is... done rather shamelessly (they know better than any one that sex sells).
But I think the fact that they are developing this for the Wii, and most likely aiming for a teen raiting should motivate them to show some restraint. Also, didn't TN's founder leave after Ninja Gaiden 2 came out? If I recall, he was a major factor in TN's... game design philosophies...
So hopefuly, with that in mind they won't screw this up.

Once they are done, if they decide they miss the way they used to do things, they can go back to that for all I care. Just do a good job on this and give Saus the respect that such a long running character like her deserves.

After that, you can go and make DOA Extreme 3, with Natal compatibility allowng you to acutally "GRAB" the girls!...just don't expect me to buy that one.

This could be really good or really bad.
IMO why fix whats not broken... God help them if they ruin Samus' image which has been pretty bad ass for over a decade.

I love the idea of actually seeing how Team Ninja and Nintendo create Samus's philosophy on things. Hopefully, they get a view point that is deep and insightful for a charter that has been through many hardships and have came out victorious in the end. As long as we don't have to deal with her PMS.

Movies huh? Is there going to be dialog in them? I'm tired of Nintendo taking the easy way out and not adding real voices to games.

wow jus shut up man.im a ps3 guy too but mario, zelda, n pokemon were one of my first games ever back when i got n n64. and tho i traded my wii to get a ps3, i still had a good time playing metroid and mario galaxy. those games really helped my pass the time and have a lot of respect for the franchise and their creators. so i say if they know how to keep these old franchises going with new ways of changing things up i say go ahead. im happy to see that the old games that i used to play when i was little still ahve life in them. even if i dont have the system right now.

I'm all for more/better storytelling in games, if that means more character depth great

but a more emotoinal woman? from Team Ninja???

what's she gonna do? fight in string bikinis and lick icecream and play volleyball with the DOA girls?

Samus vs Kasumi Butt Bumping Battle! FIGHT!

emotional side would be interesting if it was from anyone else other than Team Ninja, as it is it's just...frightening.

hey they could surprise me though...we'll see I guess.

Sure give Samus a man to kinda fall for and then kill him, Metroid could use some dramatic omph.
