This morning, Sega announced that Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, a sequel to the 2D, side-scrolling action-puzzlers gamers know and love, will be released on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare this summer.
According to Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough, the game is a new adventure, but will pick up after Sonic & Knuckles, but marks the beginning of a new story arc. Hence the "Episode 1" subtitle.
"One of our goals was to make a gorgeous-looking 2D Sonic game," Balough told GameSpot. "This approach allows fans new and old to see what a 2D Genesis-style game would look like today with modern graphics"
According to Balough, Sonic favorites like spin-dash, and power sneakers are back, with the added appeal of a homing attack. The music will remind you of the 16-bit days but will be updated as well. Other than leaderboards, it doesn't look like there is any multi-player, and the game is designed to play identically on each system.
So, what do you think of the return of Sonic? Do you care? Do you think Sonic going download-only is an insult, given the full-disc, multiplayer treatement Mario got in Super Mario Bros. Wii?

2D is the new 3D! Really, the consoles are extremely powerful compared to the prior 2D gens. Plenty of games can be redone in HD, and remain 2D. Wii's Mario sales success certainly will help inspire the other game companies to embrace 2D gaming once again. Digital release is a smart release strategy, and who knows, maybe their is an Ipad/Ipod/Android/PSP version in the works too. Just hope that Sega keeps this concept going.

Hooray! This is just what I've been asking for. It still scares me a bit, because knowing Team Sonic's track record, there's still a good chance they could screw this up.

Going down the Megaman 9 route, are we Sega? Whatever, I cool with that. A 2D Sonic game probably means that it won't suck. Remember the GBA Sonic games? Those were good! Keep doing stuff like that, I'll buy them!

i understand that this is a potentially good move for sonic, but i have to take a look at the bigger picture in gaming
for years, we have b**ed moaned and groaned that we want better looking games. we need better looking games. and when technology gets to the point of crysis, MW2, ect. we start digressing.
perfect example. Megaman. it started at 8bit, moved to 16bit, upgraded to full 3d, went backwards to handhelds on 32 bit, and finaly back to 8bit. Sonic started out at 16bit, went to pseudo 3d on genesis, went full 3d on dreamcast and onward, then went back to 32 bit for DS and now finally back to 16 bit.

I want a new Sonic Adventure! Sonic Adventure Battle 2 is still one of my most favorite games. Sonic Adventure DX was cool too.

Hooray for classic 2D gaming. As if non-3D games weren't fun. I'd play classics like Dragon Warrior 4 anytime over any of these recent FPS games.

I don't think i would buy it if it was anything other than download only. Sonic has let me down too many times in recent years for me to be willing to pay full price for one of his games. I'm also glad there is no multiplayer. I can't think of one Sonic game where the multiplayer was actually worth playing.

I am saddened that knuckles or tails won't be returning. I enjoyed having the option to play a different star and liked the 2 player feature of sonic 2/3.

To be honest when i was younger I was a nintendo fan so I only played Sonic sparingly. I became a fan when my son played it on the gamecube (irony). Then I played with him and grew fond of sonic with my kid. The download is not an insult as it is a game nonetheless. Mega man 9 and 10 are nothing but herald comebacks. Why shouldn't Sonic be?
