Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

We only squeezed a few minutes of Mass Effect 2 discussion into last week's Feedback, but don't worry, BioWare's space epic will be the focus this time around. We already talked about Mass Effect 2 during our previous reader question, though, so I'm making a request this time around: no questions can be related to Mass Effect 2! What do you want the Feedback crew to talk about?

Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me. You can also follow me on Twitter.

The big numbered score is the first thing people see when they come to a review. If they don't agree with the score a game receives they will likely ignore everything else the reviewer has to say. Dropping the numbered score system would encourage people to actually read the reviews and engage in educated conversations about the quality of the game, instead of arguing over whether the worth of the game equals 5 gold stars instead of 4. Is there any chance of X-Play and the G4 website just getting rid of numbered scores?

Hello fine folks at G4, i had a couple questions for your esteemed panel.

    #1 - [Mass Effect 2]

Does it bother anyone how the assault rifle & sniper rifle mash together with whatever heavy weapon your character is carrying?

Don't get me wrong, i am a HUGE fan of Mass Effect, and just about everything Bioware puts out there. Considering the gargantuan improvements that have been made across all areas of the game (most notably the combat) it seems a little strange that Bioware would allow such an obvious "hiccup" in the modeling. I assume that there must have been no easy solution to addressing the issue, what with the limited amount of real estate on the characters back & the inclusion of an additional (and much larger weapon). Hope i don't come off as being unreasonable, i just figured that in a game where a person could quite easily rack up 60+ hours of playtime (much of which is spent in 3rd person) that they would have found a way to make it fit.

    #2 - [Multi-player]

Nowadays, is multiplayer the "cherry on top", or has it become the sundae itself?

These days there is so much focus on the multi-player in games, and i feel that in many cases the single player suffers as a result of that focus. With so much attention being put into multi-player maps & modes one would assume that the experience would be good (ie. balanced, free of glitches, ect.). However, i have begun to notice a trend lately where many of the die hard multi-player guys i speak with are "growing out of it" for lack of a better term... You absolutely CANNOT find a single multi-player match on any game nowadays where everyone is playing fair and enjoying a good clean match. There is always some people taking advantage of ridiculous glitches in maps or equipment, never any shortage of people using internet manipulation (ie. lag switches, ect.), and usually a few boosters off in a corner somewhere cheating there way to that next unlock.

I hope one day to see there be a good balance between the single player & the multi-player in games.
Does anybody doubt that Modern Warfare 2's campaign would have been 10 times better if they hadn't pumped so much of there developing time & resources into what is now considered by many to be a ridiculously broken multi-player? For now it seems to be feast or famine, with the focus being on the replayability through multi-player modes, map packs, ect.. Perhaps it will come full circle? Perhaps in the future the replayability will spawn from our desire to revisit the storyline, and multi-player will return to what it started as, a tasty extra that is meant to supplement the main storyline, NOT replace it.

    In closing,
I want to say i love your show, i love all things G4 really... I am a long time listener, first time commenter, thanks and keep up the good work!

    Respectfully,
    Jim G.

In Mass Effect 2, was anyone else rubbed the wrong way by Shepard being an advertising whore and a bit insecure about being a Spectre when they first get to the Citadel? When I was wandering around, one of the conversation trails you could do with each of the shops was to offer to be a spokesperson to get a discount. The way it was handled, kind of felt cheap. I had this Paragon bad-ass Spectre character going up to vendors and saying "hey, if you give me something I'll say I like your shop" and basically selling out. It felt too mundane for the overall theme of saving humanity. The other thing that popped into my head was - I'm endorsing every shop on the Citadel saying they are my favorite shop. Won't the other shops get pissed at me for negating their advertising edge?

Along the same lines, I felt like there was an almost insecure feeling to how Shepard was acting when he first got to the Citadel. Like he was whining to everyone he met: "but I'm a SPECTRE!"

Spectre's are the bad-asses of the universe. They shouldn't have to prove it.

Just some nit-picking thoughts. Nothing that detracted from the game, which I absolutely love!

To the guys and gals that posted questions today:

All good questions...but I believe they tape this show on Tues (Latest) so they have time to edit and beautify for a Wed Post. Save them for next week so they don't get lost. Patrick will post another one these next week and start the process over again.

It would be cool if this was a live show but it is not. So questions a few hours before show time fall on def ears....

Can someone tell me why new IP's have to constantly be compared to other games of the same genre? Game reviews, like movie reviews, should be based on the merit of the game being reviewed. Prime examples: Darksiders and Dante's Inferno. Both of these games are extremely entertaining and deliver unique and involving experiences. Both of these games were almost literally compared side-by-side with other games. This is unfair to the developers, and even moreso, unfair to the review readers who expect a fair and un-biased review.

With the growing trend of licensed games such as Wolverine Origins and Arkham Asylum becoming better and better do you predict that developers will start taking licensed games seriously and will flesh them out better than in previous generations?

Do you think that the idea of 256 players in MAG was a good idea, and if so, do you see it changing the way we play online multiplayer? Also, could you imagine Call of Duty online with 256 players?

OK, I know you asked for no Mass Effect 2 question this week but since you did not make it clear enough that Mass Effect 2 questions were going to be answered last week I feel like I got screwed. For better or worse, here my Mass Effect 2 question.

Did you have any expectations out of Mass Effect 2 after playing Dragon Age: Origins, and was there a feature/s in Dragon Age: Origins that you wanted Mass Effect 2 to have? I know they were done by two different teams but since they both work under the same roof you would think that they would influence one another. Personally I really wanted Mass Effect 2 to have some sort of the tactics menu that Dragon Age had, even if it was on a very basic mode. I think it would have freed the combat even more.

The other thing I really missed was the hilarious banter between party members Dragon Age had. Just think of the awesome conversations Jack and Miranda would have had while teaming up with you. Especially if you were trying to romance them both. For nothing else, it could have just reminded me that they were there not just for the combat.

Based on all the great games that came out last year, do you think this year will be better, worse, or about the same level of quality and fun?

ok, probably a wee bit harsh on ME2 is previous comment - I am enjoying the game and had just hit burn-out phase of over-play... just needed to step away for awhile and play on something else. There is lots to like and enjoy about the game...however, I will still stick to my first comment and state that ME2 offers less choice and flexibility than Deus Ex and other RPGs. Still, for a shooter with adventure game and RPG elements, its pretty amazing - lots of intense, tactical combat, stunning worlds and locales to explore and (fairly) interesting characters to meet (although disappointed with Jack thus far). So, I take with one hand and give with t'other

You mentioned on Soapbox that genres of video games have recently been blending, with Mass Effect 2 being an RPG/Shooter, and Borderlands being a Shooter/RPG. Given similar genre blending occuring with other recent games such as MAG and Demon's Souls, where MMO elements are seamlessly brought onto the console, do you think that we will continue to see MMO content delivered to the console via a non-MMORPG?

How long do you play online multiplayer in a game before moving onto the next new one? Or do you just stick to one? Will gamers really stop playing CodMW2 and MAG for bioshock 2 multiplayer?

With the recent can of worms regarding sexuality in games and games play, i.e. character sex, do you ever think same sex or bisexual relationships will ever make mainstream gaming?

Case in point: my straight, very Anti-Microsoft friend (An Apple Loyalist from the days of the IIc) was joking the only way he'd consider playing ME 2 (i.e. owning a 360) was if hot girl-on-girl action were possible as a story arc in ME 2 or the DOA series. Not having played either game, and only owning a PS3 I couldn't comment if such content was available (esp. in ME 2) or if it existed at all (probably not, as I'm sure it would have made the forums EXPLODE in a tizzy and the conservative hypocrites rage).

But it did get me thinking about same sex in games and gaming. I'm trying to think: has their ever been an openly gay or bisexual video game character or romance?

Even Western comic books have VERY few openly gay or bisexual characters, and most of them are lesbian, that I can think of.

Is this the year us Wii owners have been waiting for? Metroid, Mario, maybe Zelda, Monster Hunter Tri, Silent Hill for us Europeans, Fragile Dreams,... But does this mean 2011 will be the end for the Wii? Will there be anything left for us to look forward to?

16 hours into playing Mass Effect 2 and, whilst initially thrilled at the myriad of improvements and alterations, have begun to find my impetus to continue increasingly lacking. For me, the game too clearly divides up exploration, shooting missions and character development to the point where the structure of the game is becoming tiresomely predictable.

Also, as someone reared on the Deus Ex series, I find Mass Effect's moral choices and opportunities to resolve quests comparatively binary and lacking any real flexibility. It seems to be either a) shoot things or b) select the blue text from the conversation wheel.

Personally, I feel that, whilst Mass Effect 2 is a good game, it cannot compete with a decade old tile for immersive, personal and player-created narrative and play experiences. I shall take this as a sign that videogames are becoming increasingly scared of alienating people too dumb to deal with complex, independent thought and reviewers, desperate for a sign that intelligence still exists within medium, are only too eager to over-hype any title that display a modicum of it.

I have heard many of the video game insiders ponder over the glories of the coming digital download era of next gen systems. Do any of you feel that this maybe a thing to be wary of? My reasoning harks back to the comments on the soapbox about shovel-ware. If games are cheaper to produce (cutting out distribution and production of physical discs) then maybe they will not be tested as thoroughly, perhaps there will be a few more bugs, because after all it can be patched. Maybe just maybe Mr Sessler will get to bring back some of those segments he misses so much.

Do you think that Gran Turismo 5's garaging until later in 2010 is a major blow to the PS3 lineup this year, and is it safe to assume now that the game is taking so long because of the impact that Forza 3 had on racing games?

Anyone who has played the complete legacy of Kain series knows three things: the gameplay was never perfect, the story was great and that the storyline makes a complete loop and ends at a beginning. Which makes me ask will there ever be a sixth game? Or are fans of the series, myself included left to never know the story s conclusion.
