What kind of game is it?

Star Trek Online is a massively-multiplayer role-playing game for the personal computer. Or PC MMORPG, if you’re into the whole brevity thing.

Who's the developer?

STO's development was a relatively turbulent one. Originally under the direction of the now-defunct Perpetual Entertainment, the game was rescued by Cryptic Studios after Perpetual's closure in 2008.

Cryptic has been around since 2000, founded by Michael Lewis and Rick Dakan. Fortunately, they have experience in the MMO space, as they are the studio behind City of Heroes and its successor, City of Villains. Cryptic was purchased by STO's publisher Atari in 2008.

Where am I boldly going, again?

The game features ship-to-ship space combat (everyone's the captain of their own vessel) as well as away missions on terrestrial grounds. Star Trek Online takes place in the year 2409, paving new ground for the Star Trek franchise.

Kirk or Picard?

Kirk, duh.

Where's the review?

Beacuse it's an MMO, we want to give our reviewer plenty of time in the live game environment to check everything out. We'll have a review on the site for you shortly.

I have not tried it but the problem I have is with the monthly fees. I cannot afford to pay for WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, and Star Trek each month. Why can't these games be more like Xbox live with a reasonable yearly fee, 50-60 bucks? I cannot see how they can justify 15 bucks a month for these games and charge to buy the game for 50-80 bucks. I play way more xbox live because of this issue and have by-passed all MMO that require a fee every month. Just sayin'...

like skynet63, I too played through open beta and head start, and I thoroughly enjoyed each bit. While I agree that the servers could use a little load balancing word, you all probably saw the forum post that they were ordering new servers and had them ready by launch time. I'm fairly certain that with all the recent patching they've been doing stability won't be a problem.

The gameplay is indeed a black or white thing though, you either like it or you don't. While the space combat was fun to a degree, it eventually got a little stale however I am certain that the future missions will make up for it. The ground combat is fun to say the least, and I often can't wait to do another away team mission.

I liked the overall game design, and can't wait for full release...just my two cents

I hear the combat is slow and boring.

I happen to enjoy the game, went thru beta, and head start.. Sure there are server problems, but you obviously have not played an MMO at launch. The borg cube you refer too is an older version of the borg, the borg you fight later are much tougher, as i did make it to them in beta. Judging a game by a beta is never a good thing either, you fail to remember what a beta is for, it is for testing the game on a large scale platform. Doing this, means on launch day, those issues are taken care of. Are all of the issues gone? No, they are not, but a lot of them are.

I tried the beta and I didnt get past the new player orientation. It just didn't grab me. I'm kinda wondering if it gets better after the initial training. That seemed to go on too long for me.
