What kind of game is it?

MAG's original subtitle was "Massive Action Game," and that pretty much sums it up: A first-person shooter of epic proportions where up to 256 players divided into three factions battle on the same field for ultimate supremacy.

Who's the developer?

Zipper Interactive. Zipper is the company behind the SOCOM games, so they know squad-based, realistic military combat. Previous SOCOM games have featured 32-player online battles, but do Zipper's multiplayer chops extend to 256?

What's the story?

The year is 2025. The nations of the world have abandoned their armies in favor of private companies. As you might expect, the three main corporate armies begin fighting among themselves for lucrative defense contracts. The three factions (Seryi Volk Executive Response/S.V.E.R. pronounced "Sever," Raven Industries, and Valor Company) are locked in a perpetual conflict called The Shadow War, shooting each other's soldiers to lower supplies, drive up prices, and ultimately force each other out of business.

MAG

What’s The Buzz?

MAG's raison d'être is the 256 player competition -- that's  a lot of dudes running around with guns. This game will stand or fall depending  on how well it can implement the online play of that number of people. Initial previews of the game report smooth sailing, but those games were played in controlled conditions. How MAG will preform when it drops into the wild tomorrow is anyone's guess.

Another thing to look out for: MAG has an interesting command structure. How well players use that will determine whether a 256 player battle is a chaotic nightmare or feels like a "real" mission.

If everything works as planned, MAG could be the go-to PlayStation 3 online shooter.

Multiplayer/Online?

That's all there is.

What'd we say?

We received our copy of MAG the day before launch. We'll have a full review for you soon -- having just received the game, we want to make sure we put it through the proper paces, given the heavy emphasis on multiplayer. Until then, check out a couple of our previews, here and here.

See it in action:

Played the beta and it grew on me and i figured i would buy it thinking the beta was just a taste. In all reality there isn;t much to the game for $60. Missions get repetative and there is no real leadership everyone just runs everywhere. Be an awesome game for around $30 but at $60 i'm feeling rather cheated.

I don't know, I see total chaos, unless you have a group of tight friends(that can work together) to play this. Think about all the PUGs from wow, evercrack and other games. Don't get me started about the idiots playing MW2.

ok in all honesty, im not impressed. I played the beta and was disappointed. I mean come on its PS3 it should blow my socks off. And i know you shouldn't judge the game by the beta but. It felt like i was playing a ps 1 game. the graphics were horrible. so bad i almost through up. the interface was just as bad and the controls were useless. I will be waiting a long time after the release for this one.

If i can i will use this as my free rental from blockbuster and get it for a minute, because quite frankly im very skeptical about this game, it being based only online is very much an issue, but i am interested to see how cooperating with however many other people will turn out i like group play, but their are a lot of foul mouth idiots out their i hope i have a good team given that many people.

i have played the game for awhile now and i have to say i pretty impressed i think it is fun to play i like the whole leveling up system, where you can earn skill points to make your character better. i thin the reason people will not buy it is because 1. people are playing other games (MW2, Mass Effect 2, or Uncharted 2) 2. people are waiting for other games (Heavy Rain, God of War 3, BioShock 2) 3. some people don't thin they shoiuld spend 60 dollars on a mutiplayer only game

MAG with 256 retarded overweight gamers out there with only 3 brain cells to spare.. Sounds like a nasty douchebag bomb waiting to go off.. Need to rename the game: LAG.

OK - I played the go-live version, small download when you first start it. takes about 7 mins. adds:
you can now knife while reloading
    inhanced weopon graphics
    Map lighting better, clearer
Some fixes for bugs found late in the beta
    Increased sprint time

This game is awesome - I have not even played the 128vs128 yet but wow, I never seen an online shooter run so good on release. gameplay is great. 1st game was epic but we still lost, I'm Valor invading SVER, we tried many tactics but could not hold down A and B objectives to unlock C objective. but the great thing about it was everyone was working together, lets try left flank, lets sen one squad middle, one right, ....etc. 20 mins of pure actions.

Played about 10 games of 32 vs 32 mode (domination i think), we won about 4 of 6, played SVER every time. It hard to win when your invading, easier when your protecting. I like this game so much already, can't wait to get home and play again.

    What I like:
    Games about 20 min long
Starting into new game is real fast, in beta I was worried because it took awhile to fine game, but not lastnight.
Graphics a lot better, still not blow your mind graphics but pretty good.
Game runs so smooth - 32 vs 32, ran great, no LAG. no error connecting, no disconnects from game.
Like who everyone is into the Shadow war, proud of their faction, work together and stuff.
Like the game modes, objectives, mode I play most felt like 16vs16 for awhile, then when we unlocked last objective all 64 player were battling for one objective, but it still was not crouded, the last objective area alone is as big as one MW2 map.

I was not to hyped for this game, played the beta and did not like it at 1st, more I played the more I liked it, then last night I was blown away with how good and fun MAG was.

I can see how some may like MW2 better, but for me MAG blows away MW2 an MW online.

Make sure you have LOTS of friends before playing this. I'm thinking about getting my entire dorm to play it or something.

This game was a major selling point for me last year, the prospect of 256 players online FPS is amazing. I must now say I'm not nearly as much excited. It sounds superficial, but what got me excited most about this game was A. The ability to design what your character looks like, and B. The choice of choosing one side (Valor, Raven, SVER) to fight for. But after playing the beta, i was sorely disappointed. Most PS3 games play at a slowerpace than PC, or 360 games, but I felt like MAG was unnecessarily slow. Slow games are fine when focusing on a very tactical mindset, but for the most part MAG is not. I felt like the whole game was styled in a very old interface, it felt like something pre-Counter Strike (I think of it as if Black had a multiplayer). It also occurred to me very quickly that no one has mics (which I already know) and that the ones that do have mics are teenagers or often surprisingly 30 year old fathers who don't actually care about accomplishing the mission. All in all, if I have money leftover in July, or if my friends urge me to get this, i might get it, but if not then i doubt i will. I hold hope that if this game does release a second version, it will amazing, since most of what is there is a very good idea.

It's tough to say how well this game is going to do. With the sheer number of players able to be in a game during an online match; or the fact that not that many people own ps3's. I dunno if the maps are huge, but I'm guessing so, and with that in mind it might be tough to keep everyone moving towards the same goals, without he players who just like to camp and get the K/D up not playing, and just sitting in a corner. It might be tough to find players, but maybe they fixed that issue with a respawing system that gets you right back into the action. The amount of players is daunting, and unlike the predecessors, such as Halo or Call of Duty, this game's player max is quite large, and in my opinion it might be just a little too large. Don't get me wrong this game could play amazingly smooth with all those players running around shooting and capturing objectives, but when I play games like Big Team Battle, or any game type that involves more players than you need, I seem to have less fun. I like game types that are small mapped and small teamed. I have a more intimate gameplay, as well as a more serious gaming experience. I do like to play the bigger team games, but 18 is pushing it in Ground War. I played this MAG at PAX2009 and I can only say that I had no idea what the heck I was doing. I don't own a ps3, so I was really confused on the controller, it's not that different, but I'm just so used to the joystick placement on a 360 controller. I didn't play too long on the demo, but I wasn't impressed. I really want another chance to play this game again, so I can get the full affect of an actual 256 player deathmatch.

Besides I'm getting tired of updates in Halo 3, and I'm getting tired of glitches in MW2. All games have these "bugs," and they make gameplay uninviting to me. I need a game that is balanced and fun, and if this game delivers, and turns out amazing beyond anything. I'm sure to buy a ps3 and play this online, and to those who think that MW2 is the greatest game out there... ever, it's not. It's quite good I'll give you that, but alas the balancing of weapons needs to be better, and when I watch a kill cam and it shows the reticule an inch away from my head when I get sniped, or when I get knifed as I am behind someone, I just feel let down. You buy a game for 60.00, and you expect it to be good. You expect the game to live up to it's hype, and destroy the competition. I don't know what to expect from this game. I could type forever about this game on ideas on their squad leaders, weapons, health meters, but I'm just going to wait until I play the game in it's entirety. For those who love MW2 to death and those Halo Heads who read this. I love those games, but the companies are letting me down with patches and updates and all these changes that make hardcore fans look like 40 year-old Mom's and Dad's who play "Wii Fit," not knowing what the heck their doing. I like playing video games and I know what I'm doing when I play these games, and so do a lot of other players. A word of advice to the top executives. Please don't destroy the face of anymore franchises, and don't treat us like were five. Make games that require skill.
