Mass Effect 2

Electronic Arts is stepping up attempts to combat the sale of used games, with BioWare's Mass Effect 2, the latest soldier tasked with promoting the purchase of new games, reports Bitmob.

In order to access Mass Effect 2's "Cerberus Network," which provides in-game access to a store to purchase downloadable content and will be the only way to receive certain free downloadable content that BioWare issues in the coming months, you must buy a new copy. Anyone who purchases a used copy of Mass Effect 2 will need to spend $15 to access the Cerberus Network.

This practice against used games started in December with EA's The Saboteur. In Pandemic Studios' last release as an external studio, the ability to see females in the game's brothels without their tops was by purchasing a new copy of the game. Used copies required gamers to fork over $5.

$15 is a bit different than $5. The difference in price hopefully reflects how serious BioWare and EA are taking the measure, and how they're both planning to reward gamers appropriately for their decision.

What happens when this game is "out of print" and there are no more new copies being sold? Why would you penalize someone who is just late to the party, even if they want to buy it new?

This model has the potential to snowball into bigger and "badder" micro-transactions that could potentially allow a developer to "piecemeal" a game out to the consumer.

This model sets a bad precedent since it lays the foundation for a finished product to remain in the hands of the creator to be "leased" out instead of being bought and owned by the consumer. Just imagine if you were trying to sell your car, but Toyota won't let the guy you want to sell it to have the passenger car seat without a fee. Nobody would be OK with that. So why would it be OK to do that with a video game? This argument is not about money, it is about the rights of the consumer vs. the rights of the producers.

If it cuts down on piracy and used game sales, good.

This game is going to be a must-buy anyway.

how the F are they supposed to regulate X-box Live? If they can't then I don't care. They need to leave used game sales alone, that's the only way some places even keep in business..

Yeah Thankfully This is a Game I am going to Buy New Anyway (Preordered for the GameStop Bonus).

Official Xbox Magazine had a really good article on where all the money goes when you buy a 60 Dollar Game.

I find it stupid to have to pay 60 Dollars for a Video Game though especially since most suck. But I'm comfortable with spending it for ME2. Then Again I'll be trading in games for it. :)

If the game is worth, this shouldn't be a problem for anyone. just my view.

I'm have already preordered this game but 15 bucks is taking things a bit too far. I understand they want to combat the Gamestop's of the world but wow. What's next no multiplayer for Call of Duty MW 3 if you buy it used?

You're better off buying it new. Most used game stores will only discount 1st run games $5, thus you're spending $10 more if you were to buy it new. Considering ME2 will be one the year's biggest hits, don't expect the used game price to go down any time soon.
