It's no secret that certain genres of video game excel on particular platforms. First-person shooters rock on the Xbox 360, RTS games shine on the PC, and puzzle games have found a comfortable home on the DS. I'm here to talk about a genre on a platform that you might not expect to be all that great. Let's look at fighting games on the PSP!
The PSP seems like it would be hindered from the outset for fighting games; it's got two less buttons than most platforms and the analog nub isn't the best around. However, the d-pad is extremely useable for fighters and cranking out a quick fight or two is perfect for gaming on-the-go. Let’s look at 3D and 2D separately…
3D Fighters
Tekken 6

3D Fighters work great on the PSP, but it wasn't until recently that developers got them running exceptionally well. In fact, Tekken 6 on the PSP is basically like playing the PS3/360 version on a tiny screen. Sure, you don't get true online play, but the game does support Ad Hoc multiplayer. It plays incredibly smoothly and as long as you ignore the Scenario mode (which you should, anyway) the game is basically identical to the next-gen releases. Well, it doesn't look as nice, but it plays great. Throw in the fact that Tekken works with 4 buttons and a very limited amount of complex directional inputs, it plays flawlessly on the PSP.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus

Not only does the PSP have the newest retail release in the Guilty Gear series, the title isn't available on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. You would think that a game as complex as Guilty Gear wouldn't play well on the PSP, but you'd be wrong. Not only does the game have a good amount of shortcuts to assist with inputs, the timing window is much more forgiving than Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, which suffers from some move execution issues. Accent Core Plus also adds a fun survival mode into the mix, which gets more difficult as you proceed and gives the player the option of selecting buffs as they level up. This makes it great for a quick pick-up-and-play session.

Bonus Game!
Dissidia Final Fantasy

Not entirely a fighting game...not entirely an RPG...Dissidia Final Fantasy is a hybrid of two genres and one of the best games available on the PSP. Sure, there's a lot of grinding, but there's just so much here: twenty-two playable characters, equipment, accessories, abilities, summons, and a large number of gameplay modes to suit any style. Just...skip all the cut-scenes and focus on character building and fighting!
What are your favorite fighting games to play on-the-go? What fighting game would you love to see hit the PSP?

the should port all 2d fighting games to the psp. ie. capcom vs snk, marvel vs capcom, i herd they are porting blaz blu which is cool
squirt333
They are all really fun great games but dude street fighter 4 definitely needs a release on the psp that would be so good because i can think of how many times i wanted to fight my freinds on the go oh and for guilty gear we have a cult following to the psp version over here at UCR with a pretty big group fighters. Come on Capcom stop being a douche and give us sf4 on our psps.
Sawblood45
the ps3 has the adhoc party app that lets you play a psp adhoc game online.

Not that a lot of these are bad games, but gimmie Power Stone Collection over all these any day. They really need to make a Power Stone 3, get with it Capcom!
NinjaCrisis

I really wish to have Marvel vs Capcom 2 someday on the psp.

I know it was stated previously, but why in God's name hasn't Nintendo made the decision to have Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the DS. It's easily the biggest no-brainer in the hand-held industry. Little kids and adults alike would flock to purchose Smash Bros. for when they're on the go. Sprinkle in a developed wi-fi multiplayer mode and presto, you have a million dollar game.
Back on topic, Dissidia is great. It's the only fighting game I have for the PSP, and probably the only one I'll need for a long time.

Worst PSP Fighter: Dragonball: Evolution.

The only fighting game I played on the PSP was that Street Fighter Alpha deluxe. You know, part 3 but in a high-tech sort of way. That one played exceptionally well.
I also played a Tekken one, forgot which one it was but it played alright. Those games are old as of now and are probably cheap, but can't say i tried to the new Tekken, which looks good. Or Guilty Gear, which I heard many nice reviews over here.
I think the PSP is fine with the fighting games it has, I think they work well. And they look well too.

i want super smash bros. on my psp but we all know that unless hell freezes over that will never happen. and i know that dissidia is a final fantasy game but i think sora from kingdom hearts should be in it.

I've been playing Dissidia since I got my PSP Go for Christmas. I think it's a great game, but as far as defense goes, it's lacking in that department. It's very refreshing from all the other fighting games I've played.
I haven't decided whether I'm going to pick up BlazBlue on the PSP or not. It was great on the PS3 but how it'll translate to the PSP is another thing. The little buttons on my go kinda make my hands uncomfortable at times. Otherwise, I love the fighting genre on the Go.
