Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios has announced all-important subscription information for its forthcoming MMORPG, including two limited time offers intended to save you some serious cash should you decide to commit to the game for the long haul.
Between now and Feb. 2, players who pre-order the game can purchase a lifetime membership for $239.99 (reg. price - $299.99), and in addition to saving some green, you’ll also have access to two bonus character slots and a playable Starfleet captain. There will also be a 12-month membership on sale for $119.99, but that won’t be available after the promotion period ends. The monthly subscription fee will be $14.99.
If you can’t make up your mind as to how much or how little you want to commit to the game, the public beta is currently going on, so feel free to set your phasers to "test out." Fortunately, you have a few weeks to decide if you want to take advantage of these deals.
How are people finding the public beta? Do you think you’ll buy any of these limited time subscription plans?

I wann ask you MMORPG enthusiasts a question...what's more important in a game like this, content(story, quantity, etc) or context(animation, quality, etc)?
I'm not such a huge fan on MMo's in general but even I admit both the content and context is what makes them unique. They seem distinctive than any other style of game, which actually is. But I don't know, I always found them interesting and believe it or not, some people do actually like em over here, some. I will say the only thing I played close to that is "Halo Wars" and that's cause I was playing with one of my girls but it ain't MMO type to be fair. I just think they're tough, difficult, complex and out of my league because people have much more experience and relation to what they're doing and with a Ster Trek one coming out, it validates the argument towards games like these.
I think they're cool, who knows, maybe if I do try em, I will probably like em but overall, it just ain't my type.

I'm very curious to see how this game compares with Star Wars: The Old Republic once both are out. These seem like a couple of the top MMORPGs that are coming out.

I have some money saved up so I could get the lifetime sub, but I'm currently living overseas and my connection and computer rank about -95 on the sucktackular scale... With my current "broadband" connection, it would take about a week to download the beta, then my net provider would nuke me with the bandwith cap. When I return to the U.S. this deal will be long gone.

Come on G4 report about how a fourth of the players cant even level up becasue of a game but and cryptic doesn't even acknowledge these people

I have experienced the open beta and for my purposes this game is not worth free, let alone a monthly fee. I have to agree that the lifetime subscription fee is most likely a fear-based reaction to user feedback on Cryptic's part. If you really love trek in all forms get the lifetime, but if you are a purist wait for a trek mmo that doesn't totally depart from Gene's vision (may he rest in well deserved peace).

I suppose if WoW offered a lifetime subscription the opinion would be different. LoTRO happens to be a game that is doing quite well. The lifetime option is not for everyone, but if you want a game you never have to pay for again and can play free anytime you want. That little change you pay in the beginning is nothing. you pay $180 a year for a WoW or other normal subscription at the $15 a month. so $240 is what, nearly 2 years worth of payments at that rate and you pay it once and never again.
People always thing they are entitled to things...what a sad world we live in. If Blizzard came knocking like the mob at your door threatening you pay them so they can stay in business to keep your WoW fix going. You'd change your tune. Think next time about all the people involved that worked long hours daily for years or more to make the game even happen. They make it possible for you to invest and own a piece of the game you play. After all, how do you think Everquest has been able to say active for nearly 12 years now.
Devs use all your money to finance everything to do with that one game...staff, dev costs and game improvements and expansions. Add that $15 a month times what now 11 million people that play it globally, and now you see how Blizzard can devote years to a game people love and then still have their own budget to develop Starcraft and Diablo sequels for example and other new games.
Besides if things were free, we'd go back to the barter system eventually since someone somewhere is gonna want compensation for their efforts. Then the cycle will repeat..law steps back in to bring order, then a currency is created yet again to use for people to buy things. But then, preaching to the logically challenged is like punching a wall of thickening lard.

Sorry, but this is proof that Cryptic thinks this game is going to fail...

Looking forward to G4's take on this one. Shove Haslip in a room with it for a week and see what she comes out with.
Been down many MMO beta paths before. Always have a subscription or two at any given moment. Basically, I know most of the ropes.
Played the beta. Ignored the beta bugs. REALLY got no valid Trek experience from this one. Disappointing because of all the rich back story they had to drawn from. Game mechanics are lukewarm (overly instanced, maps and their sector space idea are ridiculously useless, play is very linear) and it really feels little more than a stand-alone game with a little bit of co-op play around the edges. Character creation was solid but that's only the first 20 minutes. After that, I'd be hard pressed to tell I was in the Trek universe. Space combat was interesting but some of the manuvering limitations combined with flat (or non-existent) storylines left me...meh.
I know people want to love this game. So did I. This should be a much more immersive Trek world but it's not. You don't have a tricorder, you can't chart a course anywhere without three cache loads, your viewscreen doesn't work, the inside of your ship is empty, and you're not allowed to explore anything (a major pillar of Star Trek) outside of a mission. Standing back, the Trek branding alone can't carry this game released in the current state (I KNOW it's beta, these are design flaws, not bugs).
My guess...they need about a year to mature if they can point away from the cookie-cutter MMO design and I fear that may never happen. Save your cash, trying them NEXT year. And that's hard for a Trek geek like me to say.

The 'Captain' mentioned in the lifelong subscription deal is apparently a reclaimed Borg.
Also, the Star Trek Online website says that this deal expires February 1st (not the 2nd), so it's probably a good idea to do it no later than January 31st to be on the safe side.

I'm in the beta, but it's just kind of *meh*. The character creation is cool, but I guess I'm just not a fan of MMOs.

i have played the beta quite a bit, and to me it feels like "pirates of the burning sea in space". the ship battles are awesome at times but like pirates the game lacks a lot of interesting things to do past ship to ship combat. the time i spent on the away team part of the game was very clunky and unresponsive, which lead to problems with the combat system.
i did enjoy flying through space and making star trek voyager jokes when i played this, but i just don't see if worth the subscription fee.

What I don't understand is why MMO membership fees are so expensive. Personally I think $50/year for XBL is excessive, especially when PSN is free, but what makes MMOs so demanding that we have to pay $180/year (with monthly subscriptions)? Is there really that much more going on behind the scenes then what is offered by PSN or XBL?
I don't really know too much about the subject, but I would think that XBL or PSN, which serves millions of people at a time, accessing many different games and a whole mess of DLC would be much more demanding financially than one game serving a couple hundred-thousand at any given time. Am I wrong? If I am, then would anyone be able to explain why?

This is the greatest game I have ever played! Well maybe second to Uncharted 2. Its so awesome space battles with your friends ground missions as well. So awesome! Cryptic really did it right! Loving the beta probably going for a lifetime or 12 month subscription!
