Denzel Washington's The Book of Eli comes out this Friday, and we're all obviously excited by the prospect of Denzel kicking ass and/or taking names in a post apocalyptic wasteland. But take a look at the Book of Eli trailer...
...and tell me: Does that remind you of anything? It reminded me of Fallout 3. Check out the similarities:
- Both are set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
- Both feature a mysterious wasteland wander who holds the key to saving his civilization.
- Both feature a megalomaniac leader attempting to seize power by offering to rebuild the world.
- Art direction is very similar. Same muted colors, dusty, filtered look.
- Both feature destroyed highway overpasses prominently.
- Both feature the main character taking on a henchman.
- Eli's Slow motion bazooka shot reminiscent of Fallout 3's V.A.T.S system.
- Speaking of V.A.T.S, Eli must be using it to fight. He takes on 5 post-Apocalypse baddies without getting scratched.
- The grenades, arrows, knives, shotguns, and handguns in The Book of Eli indicate a variety of weapons, just like in Fallout 3.
There are obvious differences too, of course. There's no Bible (that I've found) in Fallout 3, and the whole 1950s kitch thing is missing from Eli, but the similarities are pretty unmistakable.
I'm not saying Eli is stealing from Fallout, though; only that both works seem informed by the same artistic and cultural influences. Book of Eli was written by Gary Whitta, a former editor of PC Gamer magazine, and was a behind writer on Duke Nukem Forever, Prey, and Gears of War, so the gaming influence is bound to be an integral part of The Book of Eli.
What do you think: Does Eli look like a movie version of Bethesda's Fallout 3, or am I barking up the crazy tree here? Notice any other similarities that I missed?

I think who ever wrote the screenplay definitely played Fallout 3, a lot... I would bet money on it ha ha ha... good movie great game...

Reminds me a bit of Fallout 3, that's for sure (or any of the Fallout games for all that matters.) But one thing Fallout 3 reminded me of (before Book of Eli was out or at least before I'd heard of it) was an old (bad, but entertaining the first time I saw it) B movie with Stephen Baldwin in it I saw on Showtime years ago called Dead Weekend. The only things that really stood out as similarities to me were the dreary atmosphere, and the Galaxy News Radio DJ reminded me of the DJ in that movie.

Im pretty sure this had nothing to do with Fallout 3, But i do have to say, if they put a lucas simms hat on denzel washington they would look like the same person

But in the movie at 24:24 There is some soundtrack from fallout 1...

The G.E.C.K. is like the Bible in The Book of Eli

Well, all I got to say is that they should make an expansion for Fallout 3 that is Book of Eli. lol

I googled this topic and found this article just on the similar hunch. Everthng seems to be the same except for small differences for originality. Also if you notice at the end, the book keepers voice is one of the chAracters voice in fallout 3, i forgot who but that voice is definately in there.

The similarities are quite a lot, I am not even addressing Fallout 3, but Fallout 1 and 2.
Yeah it is a good point about the turn based combat in Eli hahahah, but they seem to use it in most action movies anyway.

SPOILER ALERT at the end he said he faught the good fight which is from fallout and it had the same music and the town looked like catterbury commons or whatever it was. and it set the stage for a sequal.

Yeah, I saw that "movie" it was called Metal Gear Solid: SnakeEater...it even had a theme song...
How can you say Bret Screwed Bret? The guy gave his life for a company, and the head of that company wouldn t let him go out the right way when they couldn t pay him his money owed. So, they rigged up some BS match with a fixed ending.

There are still original ideas, but people choose not to explore their minds and only use what they are "inspired" by, thusly "stealing" from other people's ideas. What should have been made was a movie where a one-man army takes on an enemy in the jungle with only snakes and frogs to eat to survive.

There are no more original ideas in Hollywood, they've been stealing from video games for a while and vice versa...

It s not very surprising that The Book of Eli is similar at least in some ways to Fallout 3. You have a movie about a post apocalyptic world created by a war that, from the trailer, left the land barren and desolate and humanity on its knees. With the exception of Water World and I am legend most post apocalyptic stories share similar features. I m going to have to see the movie to make a more substantial judgment though.

oh wow. this reminds me of how Saving Private Ryan is like the Call of Duty movie, right? and Clash of the Titans, that's just a God of War movie. the similarities are mind blowing.

or you guys could stop get a life and stop acting like a bunch of goofballs with nothing more to do than argue over whether a movie is a link to a video game which may be a link to a movie.
Here's an "original" thought for you: If you like Fallout 3, good for you. If you like The Book of Eli, good for you. Stop trying to make one into the other.

Very nice comparison. I love that picture at the beginning of this post.
My Fiancee and I also couldn't help but feel, as we sat in the theatre and started to become immersed into the reality this piece painted, that we were watching a film-adapted version of Fallout 3. I don't think it's an issue or a problem at all because how ORIGINAL can post-apocalyptia be? Though I do think that Bethesda managed to give hope and character to just such a setting.
Anyway, I thought it even more humourous and actually giggled aloud when we see none other than Malcolm McDowell make an appearance at the end who also voices our favourite president of the Capitol Wasteland, John Henry Eden. Hehehe.
Great freakin' film.

Fallout 3 didn't have a bible exactly but they do reference the bible. Your mothers favorite verse. The water thing that starts the machine.

when i first saw the comercial i thought it was a fallout 3 movie they either stole it and used another name or bethsda actully sold it to them but the book of eli seems like a good movie its as good as were gonna get unless bethsda unleashes a miracle.
