It seems like everyone is talking about 3-D these days. Between the success of Avatar to all the new 3-D TVs shown off at CES 2010, one might think that it's the next big thing. Will games start going into the third dimension? The Sess doesn't think so, which is why he used this week's Soapbox to talk about his perspective on the expected 3-D revolution. Would you like to play games while wearing prism glasses that make it look like things are flying towards your face? Or are you happy with the current state of gaming technology? Let us know in the comments.
Also, don't forget that as of next week, Sessler's Soapbox will be posted on Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays. That means you get to listen to Adam's golden opinions a day earlier each week. Score!

That thing Americans rally around is called innovation, and if you inhibit it in its early stages, you will never know what possibilities could have resulted from its maturation. I agree with most of your soapboxes, but not this. To everyone else, at least give 3D a chance on the market before you call it a gimmick.

I do believe that 3D is entirely unnecessary for video games, but the graphics have gotten to a point where games are ready to take the next step. If that next step isn't 3D, then what is?
sarid
if they were to make systems have a 3d option to render in 3d then it would work because devs wouldnt be tasked with making 3d work as ms or sony would be doing that so we would still have great games at no penalty for a novelty

All I could think of was Second Life. Remember when the media got excited for that pile of crap?

Totally agree, I don't need to wear glasses to be more immersed in gaming. Actually, that makes it less immersive!!!

3D is just the companies trying to find something after HDTV becomes the norm. Once mostly everyone has a HDTV, its "than what do we do?". There aren't any other options that I know of. Its the industry trying to hype the next big thing, because thats the only next thing.

I think you make some very valid points about 3d in video games. Then next jump would probably be VR helmets rather then 3d on a monitor, that would make more sence to me, but I don't think that would really happen either because who whats to spend $500 on a VR helments for their console or PC. I think the odd movie here and there in 3d is fine, because he adds something a little special to that movie. And of course now movie studios think 3d movies are the best thing since sliced bread because they can charge your more for the 3d movie ticket...
Leave things be for now because we are starting to get a nice big string of great games for all the consoles and the PC... Adding something new is just going to bog everything down again, actually think this is what may also happen with Natal and PS3's motion system also, because you are going to get the big chunk of crap games, with one or 2 ok ones...
We shall see.

If you want to know the real future of video-gaming all i have for you is one word, NANOBOTS.

Aw... Wednesday was my Soapbox/Zero Punc. day... In addition to my whining I also find 3D to be a little pointless.

Feedback is not boring at all. I find them very interesting, insightful, and enlightning. I look forward all week to them...cuz i dont watch them on thursday (now its gonna be wednsday) i watch them on sunday, usually at 2 in the morning after playing alot of videogames and drinking 5 cans of cherry dr. pepper. Maybe thats why. oh well, Feedback is still my favorite G4 segment

I agree with Sessler on this topic 100%. I don't want 3-D gaming at all. I don't even really want new consoles. I want games to be made better with the hardware that we have now, because the hardware is still great. I want a new way to play games without having my eyes bleed, thats why I'm excited for Heavy Rain. I want improvements to excisiting franchises, thats why I'm excited for Mass Effect 2. I am also still happy with a different and exciting way to play games, that why I'm going to pick up No More Heroes 2. 3-D is not on my radar and I only hope the rest of the public sees that, and they don't need 3-D glasses to see it.
P.S Thank you Adam for mocking Dan Cooks comedy. I will never know why he is considered funny.

I agree with the idea Adam is stating but I dont agree with a lot of his points.
I do think 3D is that next big thing in TV and movies. For the longest time a movie experience was something that could not be duplicated in the home, even with VHS and HIFI sounds you could not duplicate the movie experience. But when movies went DVD and people started having LARGE HDTVs and 5.1 dolby digital surround sound, it really made the movie experience obsolete. Why go out when you can have the exact same experience in the comfort of your home? The movie business needed something new that would make people want to go to the movies, and 3D is that thing. Yeah the majority of 3D movies like Beowolf are just gimmicks that dont really add to the movie in anyway (like the Wii to gaming), but if you experience the greatness of a movie like Avatar in IMAX 3D, it truly changes the movie experience for viewers and makes you ONLY want to experience movies that way.
But of course in our consumer driven society its all about trying to duplicate that experience at home, and companies are trying to do that...but fact is thats not going to happen anytime soon...and we dont need them too....and thats were I agree with Adam.
I think it would be great if the tech companies focused on making the Avatar experience the norm for movies and not the exception, rather than trying to rush crappy 3D to the home. I think that would reinvent what it means to go to a movie. I think certain companies should focus trying to bring that experience to TV, but not for the home market, but for bars and movie theaters to capitalize on (for example watching the Superbowl at a bar on a screen the size of a wall that has 3D technology that makes it feel like your on the field). And once that technology has been perfected and becomes less expensive and we as consumers get used to having to go out to experience things like that, then the tech companies can focus on bringing that experience to the home as movies focus on whats next.
And just like how Avatar proves if done right 3D can reinvent movies. I think it can reinvent gaming. But again not at the home, the technology to do it right just isn't there and they shouldn't try to force it (ex. Virtual Boy or those lame 3D glasses that came with the last Sly Cooper game). I think were this can reinvent gaming is on the arcade front. When I was growing up arcades were the ish because they were years beyond anything you could do in the home, now arcades all full of games that look like PS2 games and play like Wii games, and thats why only lil kids and drunks (Dave and Busters) still enjoy going to them. But if the arcades were full of machines that looked as good as and had technology that was immersive as Avatar, that had good gameplay, it would revitalize that part of gaming, a part of gaming that used to push the envelope and now doesn't even exist.

I dont play the wee because I dont want to flail around when I play vid games and I dont want stuff flying at me when I watch a movie.

ON TUESDAY !!!!!!!!
Nice soapbox, best one yet.
Apsalus07
Oh I forgot: 4) The economy will improve by the time 3D TVs come out.
Apsalus07
Sessler you are wrong and I will be laughing in 10 years when everyone is making 3D games, I'm gonna repost this "soapbox" and everyone will see how narrow-minded you were. That's OK, I still love you.
Briefly, let me refute all your points: 1) Immersion is NOT just emotion, but requires graphics to help the imagination. For example, pong is not as immersive as say VirtuaTennis 3 simply from a graphical perspective. 2.) Game companies aren't constrained to making EITHER good games OR 3D games: they can make both. 3.) You don't need to put on two pairs of 3D glasses at the same time.
See and that didn't even take 5 minutes.
Champ18
3D is so overrated it's ridiculous and there is no way I would buy a 3D tv. The gaming industry needs to stay away from 3D tech
wolfgang71
3d might be the next step in the video game world, but it probably wont happen for a long time or at least until the countries of the world can get back on there feet economically. I would rather things not change because there fine right know improving graphics and game play is what i would like to see over 2010 and 2011.
scoobythebeast
My bigest problem with the 3d is that developers will start making games to fit the 3d. Its happening in movies now, i haven't seen Avatar but i have seen other movies in 3d and the film makers throw random 3d parts into the movie that has nothing to do with the plot or curennt situation on the screen.
