According to Activision’s internal estimates, worldwide sales for Infinity Ward’s wildly popular shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have now passed $1 billion.
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records," said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick in a statement released to the press. "There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game."
The announcement isn’t all that surprising considering the game has been smashing sales records since it took in an estimated $550 million worldwide just five days after its release back in November, but it’s still mighty impressive.

I was in denial about call of duty franchise so i always would rent it, beat the campaign, and return it. Gears of war was my favorite franchise. But with the recent lag fest that has been going on in gears of war, I decided to go online with call of duty MD2....... I love this game and if you dont have it you are screwing yourself out of a nice experience! My favorite online shooters in order. 1. Gears of war 1 2. Cod MD2 3. Gears of war 2 3. Halo 3 There you have it, if you have a problem go ahead beat me up in the replies!

I waited for an hr, for this game at midnight release. My only complaint was that they took away Nazi Zombie which was 4 player and made Special opps to 2 players.. Why couldn't they they keep a 4player game that was like zombie or just have a 4 player special opps.?? And have a regular Team Deathmatch with no Camping map..

wow 1 billion maybe the developers can afford to make this game look much better instead of getting many pieces of cod4. not to be rude since it is an awesome game, but a game with better graphics with the mw2 playability would be awsome

if the only gamers in this generation were serious gamers, im sure that Mw 2 would have lower sales
but because of the rise of underage and casual gamers, this game got such high success
and cod4 is better

IM REALLY GLAD THAT THE GAME IS DOING SO,SO WELL. IT TRULY DESERVES IT,BUT HOW COME PEOPLE COMPARE THE SUCCESS OF A VIDEOGAME TO THAT OF A MOVIE? I UNDERSTAND THAT BOTH ARE FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT,BUT THE COST OF A VIDEOGAME IS $60 PLUS TAX. THE COST OF A MOVIE TICKET IS AROUND $10-$15. HOW CAN YOU COMPARE THAT? IT JUST DOESNT SOUND FAIR AT ALL. LOOK AT AVATAR,THAT MOVIE ALREADY SURPASSED THE $1 BILLION MARK. NOW THATS IMPRESSIVE

I think he was just making a comparison. There has been a lot of speculation going around saying that video games are becoming just as important as movies in regards to culture. $1 billion is still impressive either way.

I'm glad MW2 has really great sales, but I don't like how Bobby said MW2 "shattered theatrical box office... records." How exactly does a video game shatter box office records?
