Feedback -- The Next DS, The Insanity of Bayonetta, and Do We Believe in 3D?

It's 2010, and what a fun, sexy time it is for Feedback. We're kicking off the new year in grand style with Sega's Bayonetta, our Game of the Week. I watched Patrick play it earlier in the week, and my brain's comprehension ability shut down after about a half-hour. But the funny thing is, I couldn't avert my gaze. It's like a high-calorie train wreck that you want to give the MST3K treatment to, but will still end up genuinely enjoying just because of how crazy it is. How did Abbie, Sterling, and Patrick feel about it? You're going to have to watch...

Feedback -- Bayonetta Edition »

Also on this week's agenda:

  • Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata revealed that the next Legend of Zelda game will hit the Wii in 2010. No details were revealed, but it's nice to know that it's only about 11 months away.
  • He also started talking about successor to the Nintendo DS. "Higher resolution" and "motion sensing" were mentioned, which isn't really too surprising given the Wii's success and how old the current DS tech is.
  • The Consumer Electronics Show is happening in Vegas, and the collective geek spotlight is on 3D television. After the impressive demonstration in Avatar, is it something we're willing to wrap our eyes around at home?

Feedback: Suggestively sucking on lollipops since 2009.

    Good Feedback. After hearing the discussion on Bayonetta I think I may pick it up even though I was skeptical of it at first. Thank you for clearing up the differences between the two versions so now I can buy it for my 360 instead of PS3. I hope this year/decade of gaming is great for all of gamers.

    P.S I liked the MST3K references. I don't know how many people know it anymore since none of my friends are even aware of it and the ones that do are don't think it is funny. I know they are poor unfortunate souls.

    P.S.S To Joe Lynch, Hey I like the haircut and the awesome Battle Royal shirt. Oh and just recently I had a friend watch my copy of Wrong Turn 2 and he loved it so you have a new fan. Thanks for the blood and guts man.

    It's like imagine something like that with natal,wiimote,or PS motion controller. Instead of the games' world jumping out at you could be in it instead.

    So my rant is centered around this whole 3D as a gimmick thing. As I see it we are all getting sucked into this as something we MUST HAVE. But as far as i see it there is always a side option of 2d and I don't know for a fact but it's not as if every game developer is stupid and thinks we must have 3d in this game. I think when all is said and done people will come to their senses and think to themselves "this would make for a good 3D game" and if they don't think it right away I assume their is always the possibility of a patch to make it happen. Thus the side option of 3d or 2d. And like Patrick said about buying a 3D TV on accident I would buy that new Sony monolith TV just because it looks damned sexy. But if it's too expensive I feel like not only me but others would just skip out on this whole 3D thing and just buy themselves a brand new 1080P XBR9 for half the price thinking I'll wait for "the next thing" thats worth my money that comes out in 2012 or whenever.

    Also since Abbie caught the Eva reference I figured I would point that I remember way back watching .HACK// on Toonami thinking those goggles or whatever they wore were the coolest thing and I remember some arcade game where you wore this huge drop down very daft punk esque helmet to look around in game. I thought this would be the future of gaming back in 2002 and I still think it's not such a crazy idea.It could just be another option. And hopefully cheaper than $4-$5000.

    Great Show! My big question for gaming in 2010 is this the year world of warcraft might start to die, with MMO games such as Star Trek Online or Star Wars The Old Republic, could the MMO community finally get a breath of fresh air on familiar grounds?

    Regarding the question of the week, and specifically the 'digital flea market', Stardock is already doing this. They're pushing a new tech of theirs call 'GOO' which I can't recall what it stands for but is basically an api for publishers to wrap shell if you will around a digital product and allow consumers to re-sell that product either to a friends or perhaps sometime in the near future an online retailer.

    If you look at some of the more recent titles developed and published by Stardock via impulse you will see that they are 'GOO' enabled. I don't really know if there is any other infrastructure there to handle the software on the receiving/2nd hand side yet though.

    HOWEVER... I can say that Stardock does an amazing job with their digital goods post purchase support. For instance, I bought Cities XL because I am starved for a good city sim like simcity 4 (that doesnt crash and burn constantly) and was severely dissapointed. That said, I asked support what my options were in terms of a refund and basically what it boils down to is if the original publisher is unwilling or unable to issue a full refund, no matter the reason, stardock will personally issue a 75% refund on the software, no questions asked. Sure it's not a full refund but it's by far the best I've seen in the digital marketplace.

    What if its not watching your whole body move but just your eyes? So lets say they have something in the new handheld that lets you look at a spot on the screen and then you actavate it with a blink or a press of a button

    I personally don't think that 3-D tv will ever find its place in the living room. Whether you have to put on glasses to see it or not I don't see it happening. It's not really practical. This is something that is only a problem for me and few thousand individuals out there, but what about people who only have vision in one of the eyes. Can't see 3-D tv or movies.

    I agree with Abbie about the glitchers on Live. Its rediculous how many games i join were i see people glitching. I Always play the game fair but its hard to keep coming back to a game when other people don't have the same common decency.

    I like Devil May Cry. I like it for all aspects of it, the combat, the stories, the characters, the difficulty... Heck, i even have DMC 2.

    I like Bayonetta too, but for the combat only. Haven't played enough to get a final word.
    Never got to play God of War, either. I want too... hmm, maybe i should pick up that combo...

    I also... don't like that... completely online distribution... i like having a game box with the book and the CD.... hmm... Maybe that will happen with our holo-tv's, eh?

    Anyways, thanks for another great episode. I always like listening to Feedback. I love these (what i say are) intelligent conversations and the fact that they're about video games! You guys (and girl) make my day.

    @Metalstorm98
    I read yesterday that you can change the class of your original Mass Effect character at the beginning of Mass Effect 2.

    @tturner1
    I happen to agree with you I dont think that 40 is too much to pay for what seems to be a large amount of DLC

    I haven't beaten basically any of the big games for the Wii, though I do have them all. So I do realize we need to play those games sloooooowly. Also... The film industry has just gone completely crazy in the last couple of years. I agree 3D is a huge distraction and a gimmick. Coming into 2009, I wasn't thinking "YEA!!! THAT AVATAR THING IS COMING OUT!!!". I was really thinking "YEA!!! QUINTIN TARANTINO IS MAKING A NEW MOVIE!!!". So, I've been focusing much more on the game industry. Good podcast, keep it up.

    I do not understand why it is so unreasonable for DA:A to be priced at $40, i understand that that seams to be high for DLC but you get around 15hrs of more content. This seams fair to me as the majority of games at a $60 price point usually have around the same amount of content. Not to mention that this is a Bioware game, and i think we can all agree that Bioware is really awesome and this will be most likely extremely polished. And considering that DA:O played extremely differently based on the decisions you make i could easily see my self playing through 3 or 4 times. However i think it is fair to say that if Bioware was not purchased by EA this would most likely be 10 to 15 $ less. (PS, Feedback is awesome, i have not missed an episode yet!)
