Nintendo appears to have made the first comment about a successor to their popular DS.
Speaking to Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata (as first translated by Siliconera, with clarification from Wired's Chris Kohler over Twitter) mentioned a follow-up to the DS would feature higher-resolution visuals (no surprise) and a motion sensor of some sort.
Iwata did not elaborate on what he meant by a motion sensor and whether that would simply be an extension of the touch screen (i.e. adding touch capabilities to both screens) or literally having a sensor that detected physical movement beyond what the camera on the DSi is capable of. Given the DS remains wildly popular and a consistent seller, the answer to that could be far off.
There was also some brief but important news about the upcoming The Legend of Zelda sequel for Wii. Nintendo leader Shigeru Miyamoto once declared his intentions for The Legend of Zelda to arrive in 2010 but wouldn't promise that'd actually happen. In the Asashi Shimbun piece, however, Iwata mentions the follow-up to Twilight Princess would be released before 2010 is up.
Good news, right?

Wow... nintendo is remakeing one of there systems isn't it funny how they keep on remakeing the same games and slightly different systems. I grew up on nintendo, and i own a wii, 360 , and a ps3. nintendo has become a money grubbing company and people need the stop buying the same content over and over again. I have been doing it for years and i'm finally waking up everyone else should too.

I hope they have music thats better than the music on Twilight Princess. Twilight Princess's SOUndtrack in comparison to every other Zelda game was lackluster and just plain lame. Hope the music goes back to Ocarina type, that was the Shiz.

Maybe the DS will work as a wii mote =O
No, but seriously this is great new High res portable graphics and the 3rd and first party support the DS has can only be amazing, and twilight princess mario and metroid all in the same year? I couldn't be more excited!
LOPster
Maybe they mean an accelerometer?

Problem.... What happens if your in a car? the back window will have movement and screw up your game.....

Smart move by Nintendo, by finally realizing, it was time for whole new portable gaming console. Even though DS is king of hand held gaming, it's time for newer inovations and finally better graphics. THANK YOU NINTENDO

I'm not into handhelds, so I'm really excited about a new Zelda! Twilight Princess was a really amazing game as was Windwaker and Ocarina, can't wait to see what they have in store next

wow that is good news and kind of surprising that nintendo would release mario, metriod, and, zelda all in the same year, maybe this means 2010 is going to be the last true year for the wii and that a new console is on the horizon. on the ds front im really excited that there is going to be a true successor and not just a bunch of add ons like with dsi, i still own the original ds and im not going to upgrade unless it breaks or this new system comes out.

The only way I would buy a new Ds is if they actually improve the graphics. I really dont care for N64 style. But I dont see how that would work upgrading it to gamecube graphics...plus a motion sensor...itd be like a wii but a DS. Wouldnt that get in the way of the Wii? Maybe they are trying to make it so you can play Wii games on the go....I dont think that would happen but....The Wii is basially a gamecube plus motion. SO how could they upgrade it and expect people to buy the wii? Unless they are coming out with a new home system as well....hmmm

Yes finally, a great year for Wii...Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Mario Galaxy 2 and now New Zelda sweet.

Bout time we get another exclusive game for the wii that doesn't suck.
Ghost 462
What you say to the statement: the wii is just a suped up ps2 with motion controls. Just throwing that out there.

Great news about Zelda, unless they change their minds.
But how much better are they making the DS? Currently it's about as strong as a 64, so does this mean will have something almost as strong as a gamecube to play on?
DarkMaster2101
I want the entire mobile device to be an engineering masterpiece, like a screen that can fold on your hand. Even core games can be done right with the right motion sensor.
elgranconde
what a way to start 2010!...some good news about zelda wii....now at least what we need is a name =D

I wonder how the motion sensor will work on the DS. If its an asset, then yeah I can see that but if its a less of a benefit, then is pretty as complicated as it is. Would be a new level but who knows, maybe the tech is there.
Finally a new Zelda will be out. I don't care when or how, or where but as long they ante up the newest edition. It'll definitely be worth it. It might take some time for Nintendo to release some good games and their track record shows that but they often do a good job. Nice to hear.

I can't see myself getting another handheld until they add 2 thumbsticks, so I can play some FPS that work the way they should. A motion thing plus dual thumbs sticks, In my eyes that would please a lot of different people. Looking forward for more reasons to turn on my wii
Draug419
I was so hoping for a 2010 release for Zelda Wii. Perhaps my hopes and dreams will come true. :D
SgtPepper09
not a big fan of the wii, but as a Zelda fan, twilight princess is my favorite zelda game. I wish for a great sequel.
TheScientist
Good news indeed but for the DS successor using motion detection that would seem kinda awkward waving in front of a portable device.
