Electronic Arts Sticking By Tiger Woods, Which Is Good News (For Me)

I do not have to play Rogue Warrior, readers, but Stephen Johnson does!

As I predicted, Electronic Arts still values what Tiger Woods can bring to their golf game, despite his personal controversies and other advertisers pulling out en masse. EA Sports head Peter Moore announced on his corporate blog this morning EA will continue to work with Tiger Woods on future games, starting with the upcoming Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, currently in private beta.

"Our relationship with Tiger has always been rooted in golf," said Moore. "We didn’t form a relationship with him so that he could act as an arm’s length endorser. Far from it. We chose to partner with Tiger in 1997 because we saw him as the world’s best, most talented and exciting golfer. We struck that partnership with the assumption that he would remain near or at the top of his sport for years to come."

EA came under criticism earlier this year for including convicted rapist Mike Tyson on the cover of Fight Night Round 4. Moore defended that choice for Tyson's profound athletic career. In an interview with Eurogamer, Moore said he made that decision "because of the respect I have for Mike Tyson as a boxer." Similar reasons are being used for the decision to stick by Tiger Woods.

"By his [Tiger's] own admission, he’s made some mistakes off the course," continued Moore. "But regardless of what’s happening in his personal life, and regardless of his decision to take a personal leave from the sport, Tiger Woods is still one of the greatest athletes in history. At EA Sports, we make authentic sports simulations. When we say 'It’s in the Game,' it is not just a tag line but a statement about the quality and authenticity of the game experience. Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online is truly representative of that rallying cry, and a game that all of us at EA Sports are proud to be delivering this month to sports fans around the globe."

I'm just happy I don't have to play Rogue Warrior, but do you think EA made the right call?

Tiger Woods IS golf. He made buckets of cash for all of his sponsors, and most have turned their backs. Why? Because he was promiscous. Since when do atheletes and celebrities have to live up to the same standards priests and elected officials do? What he does with his private life should have no bearing on his career. The entire sport owes Tiger big time. This shun is just absurd. Good to hear EA is staying loyal, but then again, who else could sell golf games?

I never play as Tiger Woods anyways, I've got my own character with my face scanned in for the illusion I'm playing golf in the virtual course.

Judge not lest ye be judged, and let he who is without sin cast the first stone! What right do we have to judge anothers actions without first looking in our own closet. The moral compass of so many people these days is a bit askew, and I see no reason to cast stones in a glass house. Yet, countless numbers of people chastise Tiger for an indiscretion many common people have so too committed. Leave the man to handle his affairs and salvage what he can of a commitment he made to his wife before God. It is not our place to judge him, for his judgment day will come. Applause to EA Sports for their commitment to him. Bravo I say!

Alot of people lost respect for him but he's still the only golfer people know. Golfing and what happened to him are two seperate things, he's not a bad golfer now just because of it.

I'm happy that they stuck with him. It's about the game, not necessarily the person right? that may not sound great... but he is the best golfer around, and the games about golf, not (just) tiger and women.

Oh.. I should add tho... while I think Tiger is scum, I'm not particularly outraged about his situation... he did not commit a criminal offense, he's just a mean, inconsiderate prick. But I have no real issues of companies continuing to do business with him.

I have issues with companies who do business with convicted criminals.

Gotta love the Tyson situation.... "This man rapes women... But I like his boxing... Let's give him a job by paying him generous sums of money so we can include his likeness in our game.... oh and we'll just forget the fact that... y'know... he's a rapist..."

Would EA give Bin Laden a pay check to include his likeness in a modern combat shooter?

It's a golf game, not an in depth look into the life of Tiger Woods. People need to get over themselves. First, his life, and how many women he puts his life into, are none of your business. Second, the real question should be whether or not they continue the brand with him currently not playing the game of golf? If they can still market it, by all means keep him and his likeness in. If they can't, find someone else.

Lets hope for an infidelity mini game!

"Arnold Palmer mixes two drinks together... has anyone done less to become famous"
    "Dude he's a golfer"
"He's a drink mogul I'm sure he has lots of hobbies."

    Big surprise.

    @spicypooptastic

How stupid are you? You would applaud someone for breaking their vows, cheating on their wife and basicly destroying their kids family life? You must be a real winner.

Shows they have some sense! Tiger did nothing but do what ever other man would do, sleep with hot chicks. I applaud tiger in how many hot women he slept with!

What else are they going to do? They already invested money. Who's going to buy Phil Mickelson PGA 2010? No one. This is a no brainer.

Well, I just think they need to find a better niche for Tiger and their sponsorship with them.

For example, EA should develop a "Tiger Woods Dating Sim" video game where you control Tiger Woods as he tries to juggle all of the women in his life. Just think of all the possibilities for the Wii Remote in such a game.

Somebody patent that and give me a cut, please.

I for one will say I am happy that EA stuck by Tiger. Bad decisions happen every day. I mean I saw an add for Ashleymadison.com today. That web site helps people find extra-marital affairs (and has like two million members). Lets be honest, thousands of people are caught cheating every day and they are not forced to give up their careers for it, why should Tiger have to? And when it comes down to it, He is still the best golfer on the planet, period. Just because there has been a public outcry over this does not mean when he does decide to come back to golf he will be any less dominate. Good call by Peter Moore and the rest of EA.

you know what they say "there is so suck thing as bad publicity" this could turn around and be a great move on there part. but then again I don't care about golf games once you have one PGA game you don't need another one for a long time
