EA Shutting Down Online Servers For Numerous Sports Games

There certainly isn't anything unusual about publishers shutting down online servers for games that people are no longer playing. So it shouldn’t surprise you that EA announced today that they will be taking an axe to a number of servers on Feb 2.

The two most notable entries on the list are the poorly received Facebreaker and Madden NFL 09 for PS3 and Xbox 360. Granted, Madden NFL 10 is where most football-loving gamers spend their time these days, but I’m willing to bet there’s a good chunk of players out there who didn’t pick up the newest installment for whatever reason who are now going to have to either throw down green to pick up Madden NFL 10, or forgo playing Madden online until the next iteration is released. Either way, I have a feeling quite a few players out there are going to be none too happy next month.

Here's the full list of titles losing online support:

  • UEFA Champions League 07 - PC and Xbox 360
  • Facebreaker - Xbox 360 and PS3
  • Fantasy Football 09 - Xbox 360 and PS3
  • FIFA 07 - PSP, PS2, PC
  • Fight Night Round 3 - PS2
  • Madden 07 - Xbox 360
  • Madden 08 - PC, Wii
  • Madden 09 - PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii, PSP
  • March Madness 07 - Xbox 60
  • NBA Live 07 - PSP, Xbox 360
  • NBA Live 08 - PS2, PSP, Wii
  • NBA Live 09 - Wii (Europe only)
  • NBA Street Homecourt - PS3 and Xbox 360
  • NCAA Football 08 - PS2
  • NCAA Football 09 - PS2
  • NASCAR 08 - PS2
  • NASCAR 09 - PS2
  • NASCAR 09 - PS3 and Xbox 360 (Europe Only)
  • NFL Tour - PS3 and Xbox 360
  • NHL 07 - PSP and Xbox 360
  • NHL 08 - PC
  • Tiger Woods 07 - PC

Are you still playing any of these games online?

This was an interesting post. Personally, I can't wait for the Superbowl this season. The Indianapolis Colts are a great team and I hope that they will take the 2010 title. Their fan site Colt Power is listed as one of the tops on online sports site DozenSports.com. I regularly watch live NFL and NBA. Thanks for providing a great site for sports fans like myself.

I play nascar 09.....luckily i don't live in Europe.. I have fell victim to this before tho.....they pulled the plug on Nascar 08 last year, i was so mad. They just do this so we will buy their new games, EA has never given a crap about any of us and never will. All they care about is money

I have had it with EA-Sports games... NCAA 09 is still a viable game and too not continue supporting your own games is just the LAST STRAW. Worst problem is WE as gamers lose not the Moronic Suits who run the company they continue to be stroked with incentives and perks while ...OVERPRICING YOUR GAMES and UNDERWHELMING CONTENT....RIP... EA YOU BASTARDS.

I still play Madden 09 online regularly simply because I do not buy EVERY SINGLE Madden due to the cost. I believe this is an unintelligent decision on EA's part. I hope that everyone thinks twice before investing in an EA game for online play in the future. I sure will, considering that you might only get a year of gameplay or less depending on when you bought it. EA fails again

Basically gamers are now subscribing to Madden for a yearly fee ($60). Look for this trend to widen to all licensed sports games soonest.

I apologize for addressing my first post to Mr. Klepek, Dr. Gaskill. I think that's the second time this has happened. Either I am more mentally challenged than I thought or you guys look similar in your profile picture.

Any chance Mr. Klepek would agree to having his head shaved so I don't get the two of you confused anymore? ...Even if there was $100 at stake?

Its just another way to force a new game purchase every year. its an attempt to lock in business and take away some of the consumers options. I mean I cant really argue about shutting down games that didnt do well or really old games but come on...09?? Thats below the belt. This year saw a HUGE decline in madden sales as if people were finally starting to realize that they arent always worth buying every year. Well here is EAs counter with a check mate. Want to play sports online? well how does 60 bucks a year sound? They might as well have started an online fee. douche bags.

This may be a little off topic but EA should not make any online Achievements for games on the Xbox 360 or Trophys on the PS3 if they are going to shut down servers. I don't know why I thought of that just now but I did.

well crap. I actually still play fight night 3 because I couldnt stand the forced control scheme for round 4. Apparently Im not the only one as I keep seeing it in the cheap bin everywhere. Did they ever update it? If so I guess I could upgrade again.

EA seems like they're running their gaming company like a company when gamers normally hate companies like that...>_>

I'm still playing Madden 09 online and I too am pissed about them shutting down servers when devs work mostly on the online aspect of a game then they shut down the severs and your left with a below average game. If your going to make games with online multiplayer then you knew to support that feature or just leave it out of the game. Oh well I still have franchise mode, and superstar mode to mess with anyways. How can they justify shutting down servers for a game that was sold for $60 less than two years ago. (Madden 09) How many people would have bought Madden 09 if they knew ahead of time that EA would shut down their servers only a year and a half after it's release I know I wouldn't but I spent $10 for a used copy of Madden 09 anyways so they didn't get me for much! Halo 2 servers are still going strong and that game was released in 2005, Madden 09 was release 2008 WTF!

This is so annoying because EA insisted on running their own servers instead of letting Xbox Live run them. They got that right because, at the time, they were the biggest 3rd party publisher. Every other game on Xbox Live servers is still up and running. Nobody might be playing but they're all still there.

If any of you actually read all the info on the back of the game boxes it clearly says "EA may retire online features after 30 days notice posted on www.ea.com". And why would they keep paying money to run servers hardly anyone is using, if a game is a bust or old shut em down. I for one could care less, already moved on to new games anyway.

isnt this illegal? i understand if the game has literally 0 players or is 2 years behind the curve buy 09 games? the back of the box says it supports online interaction, if it doesnt, thats false advertising.

I gotta say that's cheap of them to pull the plug on any game released within the past couple of years. I really didn't get into the whole hating EA thing before, but I'm starting to head in that direction now.
