MAG Goes Open Beta, 256-Player Online Madness To Ensue

Not convinced Sony and Zipper Interactive can pull off MAG, their online shooter that supports 256 players simultaneously? Find out for yourself in the newly launched MAG open beta.

MAG's open beta kicked off today and runs until midnight on Jan. 10. The beta supports two game types -- 64-player sabotage and 256-player domination -- and is available worldwide.

If you're not sure how to download the, PlayStation Blog has released the specific steps:

  1. Log on to the PlayStation Store, Select "View All By Title -> M Titles -> MAG" and download the MAG Beta file like you would any other freely-available PSN video or demo (298 MB)
  2. Launch the MAG Beta program from your XMB to download a special patch that will restart MAG once the update has been received (another 37 MB)
  3. After the reboot, the Beta will reconnect and download the actual game data so that you can play (1.8 GB – 2.3 GB depending on your region)

Have you downloaded the beta?

One of the best games I have played yet. There is just a sense of accomplishment about the game that MW2 never gave me, and I love MW2.

This is only hearsay so don't get angry at me PS3 devotees. But don't PSN's servers constantly crash? Even on standard multiplayer (Modern Warfare 2, For example, the servers were down all day!) I don't see PSN being able to support this level of load when this game goes live, especially if it is very popular. Either Sony fixes the servers or the game just wont work. It will end up on Xbox somehow because it will be able to handle the load.

    ... Pretty game any day.

I just don't understand why people put so much stock in graphics over new and innovative gameplay.
Not only that but 256 player games....
No One even comes close to that, not even IW.

Love MAG, see ya on the "Battlefield" NOT hiding in a corner calling in AC130's, Harriers & Attack helicopters LOL

I like the cartoonish characters and look of each PMC.
I'll take a fun and innovative game over a "been there done that"

Mag= trash, the graphics are cheap and gritty, along with all of the character models. The maps are too large so you spend more time running to a location then anything. Its repeptitive and dull. I'm not expecting Crysis or COD or Uncharted craphics. This is more like timesplitters graphics. Even the guns dont feel right. A machine gun feels like a pee shooter.

I was in the first part of the closed beta a few months ago and only stopped playing because most my friends didn't have it and its very important to have people work as a team. When I played it last night it looks like Zipper has worked out a lot of the bugs & balance issues.
No LAG at all on MAG... it amazes me MW2 can't figure out how toe even do this in 6x6 deathmatch.
    Looking Good Zipper!

Okay after hours of attempts I was able to finally play at least one game so my nerd rage is now at ease.

My thoughts on the gameplay: I find this game amazing. The gameplay is really fun even though i was only able to play sabotage. The game didn't lag at all for me it ran really smooth. This game reminds me of BF2 (for the PC) only a lot more prettier and more of a shooter than BF2 was. Solid game so far. Now if they can only get the servers running so that players don't lose connection when just on the menu's that would be great.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I've never lost connection, had any sort of severe lag that makes the game unplayable or anything. It's worked fine ever since i downloaded it.

    and it's an awesome game

The "it's still in beta" excuse doesn't even apply at this point. They've worked on this game for a couple years, forgot about Socom and still have many minor problems with this game. They have < 1 month to fix what they can before it comes out (a multiplayer only $60 game?!) and I am pretty sure I won't be buying this game, unless they use some dark magic and get these problems over with. Lag is not my issue, but seriously, why does every multiplayer games these days, ditch cooking an effing grenade? It makes no goddamn sense.

OK worked just fine for me_ here's the deal GREAT GAME great character modeling great weapons -I love the health kit - everything is smooth great play (a little unrewarding on the kill alerts, but fine) and the story is played out by us so it isn't anywhere as pointless as I thought it could be. However, that map is going to get sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo OLDD!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY FAST They have to change something it can't just be the same style of modeling different scenary. JMO.

This game is bad juju. It possibly bricked my brand new PS3 Slim. I would stay away..... for awhile at least.

Wow. I just got my first Sony Playstation console ever for Christmas. The 250 gb PS3 Slim with MGS 4 thrown in for free. All was well for the first 9 days. Blu-ray movies were awesome. MGS 4 was pretty cool even though it took forever to download the multiplayer update and register with Konami. I think I may prefer Splinter Cell (especially Chaos Theory) to the MGS series. On day 9, Sunday, I downloaded the open beta for MAG. On day 10, Monday, I played MAG for about 30 minutes and then my PS3 proceeded to.......... DIE ON ME. WHY SONY? WHY? What did I ever do to you? This MAG demo, the GT5 demo and everything else "PS3" wasn't impressing me much anyway (except Blu-ray).
So I tried out the "Dark Side" of gaming if you will and it wasn't that much fun (I don't care if the "Dark Side" has brownies). I mean come on the thing only lasted about 10 days and then died. I could have sworn that I read all over the "nets" that the PS3 was oh so reliable. Now I will just have to return this PS3 and stick with the 360 for all my gaming needs and just buy a stand alone Blu-ray player. The extra $150 or so I end up with should buy me some more Blu-ray movies.

I just tried it. I can't even create an account. It gets some kind of initial connection, then lets you choose a faction, voice, and face. After that it disconnects. Retried it 4 times. This does not make me very confident about the game. They are going to have to prove that it works well before this beta is over for me to consider buying it. And my stamina for retrying will eventually wear out.

I tried to get in but apparently they aren't prepared to to handle the mass amount of people. Giving me doubts about buying the game.

@Dregg I would assume if that if by the end of the week it doesn't work that there would be problems cause this beta is only available for a week.
