World records involving someone spending tons of cash on something ridiculous don’t come around nearly as frequently as I would like, and that’s why this latest world record news has me so damn happy. See, a guy named Buss “Erik” Lightyear recently set the record for the most expensive virtual item ever purchased when he threw down a whopping $330,000 for the Crystal Palace Space Station in the MMORPG Entropia Universe, Edge Online reports.
Upon winning the auction, Lightyear posted on the game’s forum, "I was really hoping to win this auction. I believe Crystal Palace can be amazing since it won’t just be owned by some investor, but instead a very active, and very old player who loves Entropia Universe."
Since Entropia features a thriving virtual economy in which virtual money can translate into actual cash, this purchase isn’t the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. MindArk, as the game's creator, pointed out that Lightyear will be able to generate solid money for himself if he manages the station responsibly.
This latest purchase breaks the previous record (also set within Entropia) of $100,000 spent for Club Neverdie – The Virtual Space Resort and Nightclub.
What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a virtual item?

It seems in this game you can purchase things with real money and sell them back to someone else for an actual profit of real money.
So really, as long as they know later they can sell it for profit. It is indeed a good investment. This game has it's own economy going I guess.

$55 if a character transfer and faction change in WoW counts...

A few years ago, before Ultima went lame, I was playing heavily. A couple of guys at work were giving me a hard time about MMORPGs and so I sold a large filled Bulk Order Deed on ebay for $300. Took them out and bought lunch. Never heard a word about my gaming after that.

Anyone here that thinks buying a virtual vanity item is any different from buying a physical vanity item (ex. a piece of art) is stupid. Both can be destroyed, both have varying opinions of its aesthetic value, and both are essentially worthless in virtually every way.

What a loser. I thought buying that Mexican toy that has a cup with a ball attached with a string was a waste. Not anymore.

Thats not right. The only time I ever bought clothes of whatever was to get rid of the points I had left over.

what i absolutly hate is virtual stuff that is bought just for looks
like for instance paying a dollar for a virtual t-shirt just to look cooler than everyone else i dont know why anyone would waste real money on virtual stuff like that
when i first read this i was amazed why anyone would do that but apparently he says can make money off buying it (i dont know how that would work i've never even heard of this game) so i really hopes he makes alot of money off that place thing

I search for that thing on youtube and it's ugly as hell.

I used to think Horse Armor was the dumbest virtual item to buy. Nope, not anymore. Now it's a stupid space station for 300 grand.

This is why other gamers still get to call MMORPG players "nerds."
