The image you see above is among the worst video game covers ever, as determined by The OC Weekly's website. I never played Rival Turf!, so I have no idea whether it was as "badass" as that cover makes it seem, but I can only hope. Check out the entire list at The OC Weekly's site...
Spoiler: They say the worst box ever is the cover of the original Mega Man. But I think it's the best. Sure, everything is out of proportion, the perspective is way off, and Mega Man looks like he's in the middle of taking a huge dump, but no art I've ever seen captures the juvenile excitement and joy of gaming quite like that image. Plus, it's "State-of-the-Art" and contains "High Resolution Graphics." How can you argue with that? Check it out yourself:

I like the old man sitting in his chair in Phalanx, I used to be jelous bc I would have to go to a friends house to play it and Contra 3. But then I remembered I had Super Metroid.

The most recent terrible boxart has got to be Mass Effect 2. While I love ME1, and while ME2 is my most anticipated game of 2010, the boxart for ME2 is just terrible. Shepard looks like he's constipated and the rest just makes the game look very subpar. But I'm getting the collectors edition which doesn't have the crappy boxart so oh well.

I love Mega Man as much as the next guy but that Mega Man box art looks like it was drawn by a slow kid on shrooms. The only thing that can compare is the box art on Doom for PSone. wtf was up with the jean vest and the hair? totall better than a marine space suit and helmet.

Now I am as big a retro gamer as anyone and my love for the old Mega Man games is surpassed by few things, but I'm pretty sure nothing in the history of suck is as bad as that original box art for Mega Man on NES. Yes, it's even worse than the box art for Doom on PSone. Wtf was up with his hair? and Doom Guy wearing acid wash jeans and a jean vest and not a military space suit makes total sense.

what really amazes me about the mega man box art is that mega man doesn't hold his gun. it's worked into his arm. It's like the grade schooler they picked to design the box art never even talked to the developers.

Rival Turf! is beat 'em up with really cheap enemies, if anybody was wondering.
But they really could have found something worse for the number 2 spot.
