According to website TorrentFreak, the most pirated game of 2009 was Modern Warfare 2, crushing all the competition. The game was reportedly downloaded 4,100,000 times for the PC and 907,000 times for the 360. As for the Wii, the most downloaded title of 2009, by far, was Super Mario Bros. Wii which was downloaded 1,150,000 times.
As far as illicit downloading itself: It's going strong, sadly. This year, the most downloaded titles more than doubled last year's numbers, equaling the growth in uTorrent users.
Please understand, pirates, if you continue stealing content in this way, eventually, the budgets of games will have to be cut, honest consumers will be forced to put up with more Draconian anti-piracy measures, and game companies will lose money. No one wants that, do they?

compare the piracy rates of MW1 to MW2
MW1 per capita (%) has a lot smaller piracy rate
now what are the improvements of MW2 over MW1 on the PC version.....
also ask yourselves do illegal versions of the game get something that legal versions dont (like easy console command access direct IP connection to dedicated server access ectect?)

[quote]First, MW2 is doing great on budget/profit, considering it's the best selling game of the year, that also contributed to a higher illegal distribution area. I doubt they are going to run through the 550 million dollars earned in the first five days of release from this games production or the next. All less money means in this case is less game industry expansion.

Oh, cut the crap. You have no idea how the games industry works, so don't pretend that you do.
First off, that 550 million dollars isn't pure profit. You have to factor out the cost of developing, the cost of how much money went into marketing, let's not forget producing the game, and all the other misc. needs such as building costs and stuff for maintaining a working environment.
Pirates need to quit lying to themselves into thinking that they're not hurting the industry.

Second, that doesn't mean all budgets will be cut, just the games that don't exceed as well.
Also, remember, if for some reason, nobody could pirate games ever again...that doesn't mean a pirate would still buy it, all be it more pirates would buy it, but certainly not as much as 4.1 million pirated copies.
Third, they're downloading the single player game, almost all pirated multiplayer games can't be played online. I wouldn't make a big deal out of modern warfare 2 being pirated for that reason. Fallout 3, I can understand, not MW2's 6-hour gameplay.
It wouldn't be the worst thing to ever happen if the video game industry died, it'll either stay dead and people will get jobs of which salary isn't as arbitrary or it'll relaunch itself better than before(remember 1983?). The video game industry is too big for itself, salary wise and expects too much out of thieves.

Players probably downloaded it because of the match making BS and not wanting to pay more for being consoled. You got the host pinging 0 while everyone else has 1 bar or less most of the time. This isn't PC and should have never been done. Killed the mapping and modding communities, screwed server hosting companies, and stop any kind of real MW2 communities to sprout up from those that would host servers as in the past.
Plus it uses VAC, the worst anti-cheat out there, which most PC players knew wasn't going to stop hackers if they played CSS at all.
All the reasons IW gave to use IWNet was crap and was just about forcing DLC on players. IWNet sucks balls. They could have at least had you connect to dedicated servers through steam like LFD2 does but they couldn't even do that. They could have still charged for mappacks and made a bundle off it even if some server hosts didn't add them to their servers... most would have added it though. Serves IW and Activision right for being douches. Most will leave MW2 once BF BC2 is out because these guys lost sight at what the difference between consoles and PCs are about and consolers don't know any different. PC players do. Alot of PC players love user made maps, mods, and the communities and lag free play that are created around dedicated servers. Stop mixing PC and Consoles

Well it seems that the modern warfare 2 boycott was somewhat successful, though i'm not exactly sure you can call it a boycott at this point.

And I'll bet it's all the attention the pirate bay has been getting recently.

I am quite tired of pirates and their sense of entitlement for whatever reason they decide they deserve a video game for free. Personally I'd love a system that publicly listed pirates and we were allowed to rip them off with whatever they work on or put their time into.
Copyright and other measures like them annoy me enough already, these damn pirates are just going to continue to make it worse until something drastic happens.

I am not joking when I say that I would like every single last Pirate/Thief out there to get thrown in jail. The industry is going to get really, really, really screwed up unless these morons come to their senses. Imagine a world where you can buy a game, for $80, and that game can ONLY be played on your console. No lending it to friends, no trading it in, nothing. It is called "Locked" and it WILL be coming to game disks. Everytime you put a game in the console the console locks it to the specific identity of your console.
Sure, hackers will get past it in a matter of hours, and they will continue downloading pirated games, but honest gamers will continue to suffer even though we did nothing wrong. THAT is why I HATE pirates, and THAT is why I wish they would ALL get what is coming to them!
T_Rexx
Wow !!! Pirates ahoy !!! Arrr...lol Almost 1 million pirates for the X-Box... damn!
I see no figures for the solid PS3? developers please take notice. The PS3 is your best bet right now.
Flame on!
TheDracc
I hate to bring a possible flamewar to this discussion, but gamers, devs, and console companies need to realize how the world actually is.
Games, movies, music and anything else that is stored on an optical disk, flash/HDD is simply information. There will never be a way to keep that information secure on the medium from the medium's perspective. The developers have absolutely no control over this because people can always crack the info via computer. The protection must come from the platform.
Take the PS3: Not a single pirated game has been announced. Not one. Sony put in so much time and energy to make the PS3 as hack-proof as possible, and it shows. It's been out for several years and there has yet to be a usable hack to date. Hell, even the PS2 still is not 100% hacked (consider that some games do not work on an emulated PS2). I'm sure the PS3 will be hacked eventually, but until then...
It sucks for developers because they have to work that much harder to code/program for the console, but in the end, wouldn't the prevention be worth it? I assume so. It also sucks for us gamers because the console becomes that much more expensive...but in all honesty, no matter what the price, we will eventually buy the next console. Every single one of us needs our gaming fixes.
If Microsoft and Nintendo spent the extra time, money, and energy into creating a machine to prevent the pirating, the total number of pirated games would be vastly diminished. Quite possibly, the number would be zero for those consoles.
PC pirates are a different story, as most PCs are custom built and can have much more power and ease than consoles.
Dr_Obey
Wow. Holier than thou much? I haven't yet stolen MW2, but I will eventually. There was no bigger middle-finger handed to the PC gaming audience than Modern Warfare 2. I maintain that the game that tries most to beat gamers will lose the most. Maybe that's a little self-righteous. But, for all it's worth: 60$, no dedicated servers, and IW CEO telling PC gamers to suck it? Yeah, okay. Boo Hoo, people still steal video games.
Theft is a product of capitalism and consumerism: we want something even if we can't afford it. Therefore, we take it, just to have what everyone else has.
Modern incrementalist gaming via DLC - Dragon's Age, i.e. - where a company actively nickles-and-dimes it's consumers is pure capitalism at it's best.
Don't be upset when the system that encourages consumption and manipulates that consumption with incremental releases, or upping the price like MW2, only exacerbates the tension between lawful consumers and pirates.
CLUNGEHUNTERPJ
pirates, think of it this way: if the game doesn't make money, there's less chance of a sequel getting the green-light. you're ruining it for yourselves
GreedyMcNasty
Oh well you can't stop it. Microsoft can't, Sony can't. What is the point of even talking about it? You will never stop it. You can never talk people out of it. The most pointless thing next to the war on drugs.
freelancer799
If IW actually made a better game then i might have bought it but alas they did not, so i'm waiting for bad company 2 to play a new multiplayer game for awhile
kidtendo
It's sad 'cause with the economy people think they can't afford games but they're only making everything worse by the prices having to go up and such.. it's a vicious cycle
carzydude1
maybe this is a sign since game prices have gone up so has the number of pirates when someone can get a game for free or pay around 70$ most people are going to get the game for free maybe the gaming companies should think about cutting their multi-million dollar yachts and houses and try to reduce the price of their games
Chance and Dice
Well that's a stinker, there's about a quarter of a billion dollars that Mr. Kotick could have used to strengthen his evil empire. . .
katarndude
(Forward: I don't pirate games.) Here's an idea for all you piraters out there. If you're going to pirate a game, make sure it is at least ten years old. Maybe the original Halo or Star Wars: Racer. It's annoying when these figures come up. All the money these company's are losing is making it worse for the rest of us. The consoles are too expensive as it is.

ill say this Im not big on stealing games but lest be honest the money they made in the first week for this game isn't going to affect any sort of budget . now with some of the smaller games yah this will definitly have an impact . but its a double edged sword . people are't going to think twice about downloading games if there released with an ass load of problems. i mean why should we care if they don't
im just sayen
ABXPuPpeT
360 and pc users dont care as long that they can get it free, hence why the 360 and the PC are the worst gaming systems in the world
