According to an investor document posted by Capcom today, the company is delaying the release of three major games. The releases of Super Street Fighter IV, Lost Planet 2, Monster Hunter 3 and will be "spread across all four quarters" of Capcom's fiscal 2011, which begins on April 1, 2010 and ends March 31, 2011. Dead Rising 2 will be released in that window as well.
Capcom has chosen this schedule to "avoid competing with the major titles that other companies plan to introduce," to "preserve the value of Capcom’s titles and maximize sales volume," and "expand the lineup of titles in the next fiscal year and afterward." Pushing back major releases will, of course, amount to lesser profits in 2010, a fact Capcom also acknowledges in the report.
No specific release dates were mentioned in the document, but as soon as I know anything, I promise I'll tell you when I hear anything.

Those games were "postponed for strategic reasons" according to Capcom. Right. The only good reason for delaying the release of a game is to make sure it's good. Otherwise, they have no reason to delay the releases.

I had literally just opened up a new tab and googled "Monster Hunter Tri" just to return to this tab, scroll down, and find out it is being delayed. Brilliant.
As long as TvC is still good, I'm game.

After having purchased SFIV when it came out, I'll be postponing buying Super SFIV in favor of Super SFIV Hyper Edition. And when that title gets announced, I'll defer that waiting for Super SFIV Championship Edition. And when that title gets announced, I'll instead wait for Super Duper Awesome SFIV Unrated. And when that tile gets annouced, I'll....

Glad to see Lost Planet 2 moved from the same day as Splinter Cell Conviction. That ought to give it more of a fighting chance all around.

I wonder if multiplayer gaming will profit most from staggering game releases... Staggering releases seems to me to be a cheap tactic for shying away from the competition. (See also, wussing out, running away, etc. lol) I think most people would agree that the best benefit of high competition would be higher quality products and services, so could we see a slight drop in game quality from staggering releases? Obviously games continue to compete even after they lose that "new release" smell, but I would imagine that they lose a lot of steam after the first 4-5 weeks of hitting the market. The more time that passes the higher chances are of gamers simply renting a copy of a game or borrowing a friend's copy that their friend had beat in the first week of release and not touched since. Perhaps gamers will see better efforts to increase replay value and longevity in games. (Arkham Asylum, I'm looking at you. I want to keep playing! I do! I promise!)
All in all, I think staggering releases is a bad thing. It may be a good "business decision," but I think it's just going to dilute gaming. I would not enjoy a market in which one "AAA" game comes out every 4-6 weeks and that's all you're going to get. I want the option to pick between multiple great titles as opposed to the option of one specific game or nothing at all.
And finally, in conclusion (lol), I do want to express my disappointment with the publishers that delayed their games this holiday season because they don't want to compete with Modern Warfare 2. MW2 is a huge game and wildly popular game, yes, however it feels more like the Grinch who Stole Christmas now. Let me put it like this... On average, how many video games do you think you receive for Christmas each year? If it is more than one, then there's still tons of market potential for games despite MW2's release. I wonder how many copies of Modern Warfare 2 will be returned due to the fact that people will have received multiple copies of the game... (And suddenly a gamer is standing amidst isles of video games with about an extra $60 to blow on something.) And btw, to those companies that delayed, families tend to coordinate gifts around the holidays, meaning once word gets that someone is getting the family gamer MW2, the other members are going to look for (wait for it...) a DIFFERENT game! (I'm done, this thing turned out frickin huge... [that's what she said! zing!])

BigBlakBackward
Damn, if they want any cash any time soon they need to release Lost Planet 2 first, who cares about monster hunter, and Super Street Fighter IV......come on, a year ago you guys finally got the game that will let you die a happy nerd, and your going to go out and buy a sequel a year later...I'm sure it will be just that, SUPER!
Captainremo
Capcom you suck, now i can't buy LP2, you have screwed me...
AngelsandDemons
BS...if the games aren't available, you can't buy them......and I won't want to buy them if Capcom doesn't feel they can't compete with MW2's DLC release, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, and Darksiders....you know what? they probably can't...
Calaban007
I'm glad, they should stagger releases. This way you don't good games falling in the wake of blockbuster games like COD: MW2, as stated before. You also don't have "dry spells" in game releases. So you will have newly released games to buy after you've gotten tired of the games you got for Christmas or your Birthday or whatever else you celebrate.

Don't get me wrong I think it's a great Idea of profitability. I love Capcom and I know what they can offer to us. But delaying all these titles and spreading them over the next fiscal year? Are you telling me Super Street Fighter IV Could come out September? Or Even March of 2011? Thank God Tatsunoko vs Capcom is still coming out Jan 26th. But What About the download only Mega Man 10 or Final Fight: Double Impact are they still going to be on time?
top8cat
people might see "2010 as the year of game delays", but I see it as "2010 the end of the gaming drought"
CamperHunter1
Considering all of the big releases slated early in the year, delaying some releases so that they can get the proper attention is actually a pretty sound move, not to mention it'll give them extra time to make sure everything reaches the store shelves as bug free as possible.
Buy too many games you've been waiting for at once and it kind of cheapens the experience as you play through each of them because you want to squeeze in as much time as possible getting to know the mechanics of each, this in turn can make you not fully appreciate the experience being presented because of all the distractions lingering in your mind.
But one of the biggest positives for making sure there are no other big releases in the timeframe of a particular launch... the game feels newer longer.
Metalstorm98
they delayed monster hunter again?... damn
Marvelous_Zombie
As long as Dark voic and capcom vs tatsunoko is coming out in jan, i could care less about the other delays.
