Dynasties were created and destroyed in the last 10 years. Empires thought unbreakable crumbled to the might of progress and along the way, mistakes were made. Mistakes companies are still recovering from. As we wrap up 2009, let's remember five of the biggest blunders since 2000. There are plenty others, but these still cause me to slap my head and wonder what the hell they were thinking.
First up...
Daikatana

When a game advertises that its creator is going to make you his bitch, you better have a damn good game to back it up. Daikatana was not that game, which proved unfortunate for all parties involved -- the disgraced John Romero (who hasn't done much since), the destroyed Ion Storm (at least we got Deus Ex out of the wild experiment) and the wasted dollars of some unfortunate gamers (remember the N64 version?!) Daikatana was a game developed with a blank check, riding the coattails of Romero's previous works. Even though nothing could live up to the hype Daikatana manufactured for itself, the final product was so terrifyingly average it was almost heartbreaking. When do we get a remake?

Konami Letting Guitar Hero Take Over
Konami should be in Activision's position right now. Even though Harmonix is credited (and largely rightly so) with birthing the modern music game genre, Konami laid the foundation for Harmonix's success with Dance Dance Revolution, Drummania, Guitar Freaks and other early music games. Konami failed to captialize on the Japanese phenomenon outside of its native country, however, allowing other companies to pick up the baton. Thus, Guitar Hero (and eventually Rock Band) was born. Even when Guitar Hero was taking off, Konami put only a half-hearted effort to compete, releasing the middling Rock Revolution and using the Karaoke Revolution license as a crutch. Someone's head should have rolled over that missed opportunity, a ghost that still haunts Konami to this day.

Red Ring Of Death
By far, the biggest story I worked on while reporting for 1UP.com was about a kid who'd burned through more than ten different Xbox 360s, all of them a victim of the infamous "red ring of death." The phrase was coined after the literal red ring error that occurred when your Xbox 360 hardware failed, something just about all of us have experienced at least once, a reminder of not-quite-finished hardware shipped to consumers. It's a testament to Microsoft's ability to drive a zealous loyalty to the Xbox 360 brand that gamers didn't drop the system entirely and move over to the competition. The far more expensive PlayStation 3 and entirely different experience on Wii only helped Microsoft on that front. The whole experience cost them hundreds of millions of dollars but gamers came back again and again.

PlayStation 3's $599 Price Tag
The dominant success of the PlayStation brand created an arrogant Sony. Former leader Ken Kutaragi was a known technophile, obsessed with bundling the latest, greatest and most expensive bits and pieces into his work. PlayStation 3 was no exception, breaking from the pact with a next-generation media format, Blu-ray, a format that was facing stiff competition from HD-DVD at the time. But Sony was convinced gamers would come out in droves and -- straight-faced -- announced a price tag of $599 back at E3 2006. It's possible PlayStation 3 was responsible for the standardization of Blu-ray, but the price tag cost them untold millions to Microsoft and Nintendo in the gaming market.

Come on. Do I even have to explain this one?

Maybe not top 5, but I felt I had to mention "The SiN Episodes," that that folded after the first release. Way to go Ritual Entertainment!.

Ahhh the red ring of death. Its what kept me from going out and buying a failbox. As an older gamer of 37 years I still own a super nintendo, nintendo 64, and a ps2, all which work in top condition. Why cant they make a console anymore that lasts? I

Umm, people, can I clear something up about RROD? You don't spend $400 every time your Xbox breaks down. Its free to ship it in and get it fixed. I've red ringed twice and have lost absolutely no money and it takes at the very most like two months to get your 360 back, a week at the least. Its really easy and people should stop complaining. I can't even remember the last time I red ringed. I'm probably going to get super thumbs-upped by fanboys or super thumb-downed from fanboys. Either way, your all idiots.

well if they lower the price for the ps3 people will be running towards it i was sick of the 360 but yet i have to agree it ran well for a while and it still has a lot of good games for it and a couple more coming. Ps3 is bomb you get free p,s,n and all of that good stuff. Ps3 is like th Cadillac of game consoles and 360 is like the Toyota.
mrsoapynuts
xbox 360 and ps3 are both good in there own ways, i own a 360 andlove it BUT i also love the ps3, xbox has halo3, ps3 has uncharted 2, they both go great for any gamer.

what about "Too Human" the 10 year game?? I'm sorry I still enjoyed the game aside from the repetition and story full of holes (okay now your like what's left?) Exploring, loot/ruins and quests...and it's a 40+ hour game. IT'S EXACTLY like that game everyone loves right NOW that barely has a story - only from some audio tapes.. BORDERLANDS -repetition and no story.

wow do ps3 and 360 fanboys just get on message boards to bash each other giving there bias opinion on what system is better
both of the systems are actually good.
xbox - amazing software - biggest marketplace for a game system (fact), more develop online service, facebook, twitter, last.fm, netflix need i say more?
ps3 - amazing hardware, a all around device ; in hardware ps3 is way ahead its time, its an product if you talking deal wise u find yourself saving more with the ps3 than with the xbox
i can careless what system is best i own all of them a lot of people that get on these message boards dont even own the system they bashing

If you one of those people who still thinks 3D Realms is going to make DNF then there is a shortage of smarts in your general area

As a proud PS3 gamer, I do have to say that $600 is rediculous for any gaming system at launch and it was a really dumb move when PS3launched.. i was lucky to have 2 working ps2 and bring it down to $400 when I got my launch 60 gig. But for those that didnt have that luxury, it was quite a bad move. Im glad though they made the right choices (Sony Marketing) and reduced the price to allow more people to experience what this machine can deliver.
Now im not bashing 360 owners as some of my friends own and play on their 360's as well as the fact that it is a cool system. But the RROD of death issue should be ranked number 1. Its just becoming tremendously rediculous at this point. The first year, ok i can understand. But 4 years later, it is STILL a significant problem. AND thats not even including E74, over-heating, and disc scratching. It just who in their career-molded mind would release an ambitious system and not take the time to test and polish all the kinks out?? Yeah, it MS. And then they keep leading the public on empty lies by saying theyve eliminated the problem when its still happening. EVery update released is not polished and runs the risk of bricking a 360.It leaves a realm of uncertainty and fear that no gamer should ever have to think about while playing. But, the saddest thing here and the people id like to see pink slipped is the marketing team for 360. Ever since therir stunt with ps3 launch (the barge thing and the letter they sent out) The marketing team has created a ravenous plague of fanboys that will defend their system at all costs. It doesnt matter if anything i say here is a fact (which it is), they will continue to go to every blog to say that the PS3 sucks. MS has taken advantage of this and has corrupted gamers into paying for rediculously over-priced accessories and corrupting developers to give them the most support and to leave the PS3 table scraps in a form of bias development. Those fanboys (which would be a great new years resolution is they were all gone) are the reason which the 360 is still afloat. Greenberg is a troll with a degree. Every time 360 sees a positive vibe, he shows up to rub it in everyone's faces and proclaims that his system. Whenever other systems are doing well. you cant find him anywhere. He's even ripped off of wii with those avatars.
Well, here's to hopefully another decade in gaming. no bias. no trolls or fanboys, no unfairness from devs, and to just have fun and play the game,

I believe everyone forgot the poor SEGA'S Dreamcast downfall and that fugly PS3/360 excuse for a shovelgame Sonic 06 SEGA shoved under their door to us. I mean all SEGA did was probably think up a screwed-up storyline, create a game full of glithes and potholes, made a awful, helpless ripoff of Princess Peach, created a scene promoting bestality, and there you have Sonic 06 in a nutshell. I mean, they had extra development time for the PS3 version, and all they did was screw it up even more.
Ever since Shadow the Hedgehog SEGA tries to keep reviving Sonic unsuccessfully. I mean it, if they screw up Project Needlemouse, which could be a glorious return to 2D Sonic games; they should either sell the WHOLE Sonic franchise to Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft; SPLIT the Sonic franchise by regions (American/European region, and Japanese region, afterall, Sonic was originally made for the Western audiences); or just kill off the franchise.

That does make any sense to me how can any 1 go though more than 2 or three different consoles from the same company and keep giving them more money for a new 1!!!!! the ps3 had almost no system errors when it 1st came out and yes i brought it at the ridiculous price of $599 that every 1 bitch about. the ps3 is not just a console my goodness u have a computer and there are computer that cost more than the ps3 with a lower processing power. and last time i check people didnt have a problem buying computers and giving MS $200 4 a damn OS!!!!!! Come on people!!! I pay $600 for a system have not had any problems with it at all!! it works like the 1st day i brought it and every 360 owner i knw is on there 2nd or 3rd system and still have problem with it. When ever i go over and we play the 360 for a while it cut off becus it has over heated. my ps3 i leave that thing on all day and it never cut off!!!!

I agree with most of the choices (although I've no idea what Daikatana is, nor do I want to find out) but what about when Nintendo sold off Rare to Microsoft? Looking back on it, it seemed like a massive mistake on Nintendo's part. Sure, they got quite a bit of money out of it, but so many of the licenses had great potential. Yes, especially Goldeneye.

All 3 next gen consoles had blunders. The wii's was having a huge take off with Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, and a few others and then giving us absolutely nothing other than new super mario brothers for a year, with still no announcements on pikmin 3, star fox, or another zelda game.
Jimi0088
This is my list
1. Darkest of Days
2. All Guitar and Rock Band crap
3. Nintendo not going at least 720p with the Wii (but LOVE the Wii)
4. HALF LIFE 2 Episode 3????????????????????? Ever????????
5. Darkest of Days because it sucked that bad.
GatsuBlackSword
Man I Worked At Bestbuy When Voodoo Vince Came Out And I Remember Us giving out tone's of demo disc's for that garbage. I think the worst thing of the Decade was no DVD playback for the Wii and Sony Single Handily killing backwards compatibility.
