Video gaming and music extravaganza Video Games Live is soon going to join Masterpiece Theater and Upstairs/Downstairs in the rarefied air of the Public Broadcasting System.
PBS's cameras will be capturing a VGL performance to be held at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans on Feb. 5, 2010, and will begin airing in June on your local PBS station. A DVD/Blu-ray version will be distributed worldwide too.
VGL guru Tommy Tallarico told Joystiq: "We are not only going to have special guests from the gaming world -- game composers and game designers from around the world -- we're also going to have special musical guests and celebrities not from the gaming world, but who are very well known and fantastic performers."
Because I am an expert on PBS, I predict the Video Games Live concert will air during "Pledge Week," and will be interrupted by money grubbing between every single tune. Take that, PBS!

Way to go Tommy Tallarico. You've been missed on T.V. Reviews on the Run isn't the same without you mentioning Vic's big head, Tron, or balls!

"money grubbing" ? PBS ? do you mean that the music performers will be spewing sound bite ads ?
or that pbs does a drive to make money to pay the wages of people who work at the Public Broadcasting System ?

That's sweet I could never get tickets when it was in town.

I guess Trivium might make an appearance to show off their new music for God of War 3.

I'm torn. I really want to watch it but I've refused to watch or support our local PBS station since they screwed me on the "gift" portion of my pledge during a Red Dwarf marathon, part of which included tickets that were supposed to be the only way to get into a convention-thing with a couple of stars from the show. Later I found out they were just letting people in off the street when the day came. KCTS 9 in Seattle, you suck!
Whew... apparently I can hold a grudge. That was over a decade ago.
But Video Games Live is kinda awesome. There's a good chance I'll watch but I still refuse to support the station. Maybe I'll call during each pledge break & tell them exactly why I won't pledge... Hey! I think I just found a way to make pledge drives fun!

awesome, this will go great with "the best of Huel Howser" blu ray

Oh hell yes! I always wanted to see video games live but I was sadly restricted to only a few short clips online. Also it is nice to know that a whole new audience will be exposed to video game music and see how it is evolved from simple blips and bops(although 8-bit music is just as awesome and even better to some).

Finally, a reason to watch PBS on purpose

I won't say for sure that video games is up there with movies or novels in terms of legitimacy, but with this event and the VGA I think the video game industry is getting there. Of course there is Australia but that's a whole new topic.

ill probably just torrent the dvd

so what if it's during pledge week. if it ends up being entertaining, i'd take out my wallet (empty as it is, it'd be just for show, really.)

On the Plus Side:
I'm finally going to get a chance to (re)listen some of the best music ever composed.
On the Minus Side:
If Stephen's prediction is true, then to quote Admiral Ackbar, "It's A Trap!"
CamperHunter1
Stephen's probably right about the pledge week thing, but it might be worth trying to watch anyway. Nothing else worth watching on TV anyway.

Tallarico is the cousin of Steven Tyler
