The Games of 2010: Our Most Anticipated Titles (Part I)

With 2010 about to kick off, the G4tv.com and X-Play teams took a look at the games set to release (or are likely to) in the next year. What follows is a list of the top 5 most anticipated games for each editor. How will it compare to your personal list? Which games will live up to the hype? Which games are you looking forward to? Leave your list in the comments section.

Sterling McGarvey -- Senior Reviews Editor

God of War III

So just how is Kratos going to destroy Mt. Olympus and reduce Greek mythology to rubble? I don’t think the Romans are going to have much to do with it. If he’s going down, he’s taking everyone with him.

Heavy Rain

I’m not sure Quantic Dream’s vision of a mature adventure game will resonate with everyone (Indigo Prophecy, even with the cult following it has today, is still rather niche), but I’m eagerly looking forward to playing.

Crackdown 2

Crackdown 2

Ironic that Crackdown, the game that sold well because it had the Halo 3 beta on-disc, got more mileage than Halo 3 in my Xbox 360. I’m looking forward to seeing my life ruined yet again by the quest for more Agility Orbs.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy was the first 3D Mario platformer I truly loved. From the visuals to the score and presentation, it was profoundly charming. I anticipate that Nintendo will sweep me off my feet yet again.

Rock Band 3

This one could be a long shot, but I find it hard to believe that Harmonix isn’t working on Rock Band 3, and I hope it brings a variety of great improvements to the engine with it. At this point, the platform’s established, but the tweaks make the difference -- they definitely made one in the jump from the first game to the sequel.

Starcraft II

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

Easily my most anticipated game of whatever year it finally releases. I have confidence that it will actually be in 2010...well, at least the multiplayer beta will be. It's an easy call for me as I've played this game on a couple of occasions and it's already pretty amazing. There's a reason the original game is a national sport in South Korea.

Super Street Fighter IV

My personal game of the year for 2009 was Street Fighter IV. Obviously, Super Street Fighter IV is going to be on my list of most-anticipated games for 2010. I've had some limited time with the game thus far and the new characters fit right into SFIV's mechanics. The new multiplayer modes should also help revitalize the online scene for a long time. And it isn't even going to be $60!

Splinter Cell: Conviction

I was a huge fan of the original Splinter Cell on the Xbox, but the recent games have left me a bit wanting...especially Double Agent. Conviction went radio silent for a long time and finally re-emerged in its current form and it looks awesome. I was able to play the new co-op mode at a press event recently and it is living up to my own hype thus far.

Battlefield Bad Company 2

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

I really didn't care for the original Bad Company. At all. After playing around on the PS3 beta, I'm officially looking forward to Bad Company 2 in a big way. It reminds me a lot of Battlefield 2, which is one of my all-time favorite games. The feel of the game has been drastically improved and should hit at a time when the Modern Warfare 2 hype has died down a bit.

Mass Effect 2

I'm really looking forward to seeing the story of Mass Effect continue. I've got my save games ready and am pumped for some cinematic gaming action...in SPACE! BioWare is one of my favorite studios and I'm happy to be getting another game out of those guys so soon after Dragon Age: Origins.

Dead Rising 2

Dead Rising 2

The first next-gen system I purchased was an Xbox 360, and the first game I bought was Dead Rising. And I loved it. With the sequel I’m hoping for an improved storyline, the original’s high level of difficulty, and a few hundred new ways to kill off zombies.

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

I’ve been waiting 10 years for this one. While I don’t know if I’ll have the patience really learn the detailed nuances of a strategy game anymore (I get too competitive and can’t live with getting my butt whupped online), if there’s any franchise that can pull me back into the genre, it’s Starcraft II.

Gears Of War 3

Gears of War
was my favorite multiplayer game of 2006. Unfortunately, Gears of War 2 was my biggest disappointment of 2008, as the multiplayer matchmaking was largely broken. Here’s hoping Epic can get it right with Gears of War 3 (which we’ll hopefully see at some point next year), and at the same time deliver a story that answers a few questions.

Fallout: New Vegas

I was late to the party on Fallout 3, not playing it until about April of this year. However, it quickly became one of my all time favorites. While it’s not being developed by the same team, I’m hoping Obsidian can at least hold par.

Metroid: The Other M

Metroid: The Other M

While not a huge fan of the Metroid Prime series, I salivate at the chance to play Other M. Here’s hoping Team Ninja can make a 3rd-person action game reminiscent of Metroid’s 2D glory days.

    1) Fable 3
    2) Fallout New Vegas
    3) Darksiders
    4) God of War 3
I'm mostly excited about LBP stuff, though. This year was okay for add-ons but they need to just add more story levels. I'm not a great creator. Eyepets and the wand also look cool. natal is okay but sony is right you need a controller, they know from eyetoy :(. I hope PSP gets a price drop too. And Nintendo should make a new console, even though I dont see them doing that. They put the next ten years of their lives in motion control? Anyway, good picks Sterling, except Rock Band 3.

C'mon now people! Ofcourse "god Of War 3" is the number one choice! Reasons you all will see when it unleashes itself to us March 2010. Another is Heavy Rain! It looks really innovative. Thirdly, Metroid - the other M. I like the new direction they are taking with this franchise. Bottomline, 2010 really looks like it might be the best year for gaming yet.

There's several 2010 games I'm looking into getting. Games like, FFXIII, GT5, God of War 3, Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, MAG, ModNation Racers, Army of Two: The 40th Day, BioShock 2, Heavy Rain, The Last Guardian, Yakuza 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Halo Reach, Mass Effect 2, Quantum Theory, and a possible fall 2010 game is Resistance 3. Nonetheless, many games next year will meet my wallet.

GoW3. That's God of War. In my opinion, it's the only game that deserves that abbreviation. Not that gears garbage.
No. this is not fanboyism that stems from not playing gears and only playing god of war, I really just don't like Gears... it pisses me off...

    1) Final Fantasy XIII
    2) Heavy Rain
    3) Starcraft 2
    4) MAG
    5) Lost Planet 2
    6) Darksiders
    7) Super Street Fighter IV

Looking forward to a lot of others, but these are my main attractions. Hopefully "FF Versus XIII" and Diablo 3 release this year - I think we've got a better chance of seeing Versus than D3 though.

My pick for next year, GOD OF WAR 3 , Battlefield bad company 2, MEDAL OF HONOR, and of course, if Infinity ward makes a sequel to the modern warfare 2 franchise, MODERN WARFARE 3.

I'm excited for some games, but am interested in a lot of games. The games that I am definitely going to buy are: GOW III, Heavy Rain, FFXIII, Darksiders. Games I'm interested in: MAG, The Last Guardian, Bayonetta, Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2. I was interested in Dante's Inferno, but after playing the demo it seems it's just a worse version of GOW
