Today might be a hum-drum day in the gaming world of The United States, but over in Japan, it's among the biggest video games day ever: Eagerly awaited Japanese RPG Final Fantasy XIII is out in The Land of the Rising Sun.
At a star-studded launch event at the Tsutaya store in central Shibuya, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said his company had shipped 1.8 million copies to retailers, which basically means the company thinks FF XIII will be among the biggest selling video games in Japanese history. Square hopes FF XIII will sell over two million copies in Japan.
Reportedly, long lines formed at retailers all over Japan, as eager gamers awaited their precious copies of the game, and they're not going cheap, either. Gamers are queuing up to pay around $100 American for the game.
It's not just software sales that will likely be affected by the game's release either; some industry analysts expect the title to increase PS3 sales by 500,000 units.
Here in the U.S., we'll have to wait until March 9 to play Final Fantasy XIII. Are you looking forward to this title? Do you think the Japanese mania over its release will travel across the physical and cultural divides between Eastern and Western culture?

I am looking foward to FFXIII and FFXIII versus. I try to buy both. I may have to wait until the Versus one is $30. I wonder if there will be the first final fantasy trophies for both.

I'm really not all that saavy with tech specs and such... All I know is this: People have been going back and forth, year after year, about which system can out perform the other. I see all the time how XboX is easier to work with. Easier, rarely means better. Show me a game on the XboX that can even come close to Uncharted 2 in graphics and, gameplay. I don't think it's as much about what you're making your games on but, WHO is making your games. I own all three home consoles and I'll be buying this for PS3, day one.

Im Jealous that Japan get a white PS3 model with Lightning on it. NA should get a red Kratos PS3 model.

@lucidity
rumor has it those sites are run by microsoft. i'm not sure so i wont say either way, but im just passing on what i heard.
also, i am just upset that the US ps3 version had to be pushed back because of the port to the 360. i mean, we could be getting this today!! but no...
does anyone know if the japanese version has english subtitles?

I can't wait, either this or GOW3 will be my game of the year.

Damn, for a Japanese only release on 1 platform, thats just ridiculous. If this game had launched globally on day 1 as multi-platform it may have very well given MW2's record a run for its money. Even though FF is more popular in Japan it still is extremely popular in the west. Did anybody see the images of limited edition FF13 ps3 slim it looked pretty sweet.

It's one thing when Sony and Microsoft throw mud at each other and call each other names, it's quite another when actual game developers throw down and join the rumble. Shaun Himmerick, Executive Producer for Wheelman, made some stinging remarks about programming for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360:
The politically incorrect answer is that the PS3 is a huge pain in the ass. Anyone making a game, if you re going to make it for both [360 and PS3], just lead on the PS3 because if it works on the PS3 it ll work on 360.
The easiest way to look at it is, the 360 has one big chunk of memory, but the PS3 has two chunks of memory that in total are the same size as the Xbox, but because they re split you can t share memory the same way. That will bite you in the ass, and it bit us in the ass bad.
We had to play catch up on the PS3 because of the memory constraints and how it renders, how it processes is just different. And it s harder on the PS3. The Xbox is just like a dumb PC, which is great because it s easier to build a game on a PC.

The PPE is the core, SPUs have no access to maim memory, no branch prediction, can't do OOOE, AI, advanced physics, game control.
The reason so many games require a mandatory install on the PS3 is because the drive is only x2 as opposed to x8 on the 360. Some developers load in the background while playing a cut scene.

@lucidity if you have done any research atleast for what is Playstation 3 hardware and xbox 360 hardware is you could atleast understand that there are different hardwares at all from the beggining. You don't even know what is 512 memory on consoles and what CPU means to them. CPU is the most important part in cosoles, not GPU or other stuff... you know why? Its because of Console Lifetime. Thats why Sony always make a products for 10 life cycle.
Let me just give you a facts to shut your stupid fanboyism.
Xbox 360 have
512 MB GDDR3 700 MHz shared between CPU and GPU.
PS3 have
256 MB XDR * 3.2 GHz
256 MB GDDR3 * 700 MHz, GPU can access CPU memory of course.
Its absolutely the same, except that XDR uses Cell Broadband engine and Cell Processor and because of that its difficult to make the same multiplatform as on Xbox 360. Because CPU eats GPU. Basically you need Cell processor power and when you port game from 360 to Ps3 it will look worse always, because Xbox 360 have NEXT GENERATION Xenos from ATI that don't require Processor power. Its actually great, because Xbox 360 is a simple PC hardware. GPU, CPU works correctly without eating each power.
Thats it. If someone will develop first for PS3 it won't look worse never, it has a potential to have better details and texture because of CPU power if someone will use it of course. I can name few examples like Borderlands.
And Xbox 360, PS3 are equal at everything except two things... Blu Ray and Cell Processor. If you never experienced Uncharted 2, then i will say facts that are in the game:
blu ray - entire game is on one disk and don't require loading at missions. Only one loading and you can play all the game without any loading at all. You just watch a movie. It makes you feel that you are in the movie. Example: Uncharted 2 for now ONLY.
Cell Processor and Cell broadband engine - thats the beast that gives animation to characters that is not possible on Xbox 360. They look absolutely real, because with each core from 6 cores (Developers from Naughty Dog said they used only 5 for Uncharted 2, so i guess there will be a last game from them) you can create a ton of movements and processor will read it correctly and GPU g70 architecture will read it correctly.
Train sequence (That Adam Sessler love and everybody else) in the game is only possible with that processor. Because when you move, everything moves with you and processor read this with 5 individual cores. Yeah, they are not so powerefull as nowadays I7 core processor (Its even stupid to compare). but still its amazing and Xbox 360 can't do it. Thats a fact.
And even for example, if Xbox 360 had better GPU overall. For example... Radeon Xenos 368 MB memory, its still will look worse except of better textures on every game. But i don't know. What this will do with that memory...
So shut up please and read about Power Processor Element, then maybe you will understand. Until that, you can compare what you want. Result is what we have with Sony's first party and other developers that make games first on PS3.
PS: About better GPU... I don't know, Ps3 have RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' on G70 Nvidia architecure that enables 3d video gaming. Next year they will show 3d gaming.
So....................... I'm just saying.

Wow i can't wait to get this, even though i really wanna play XIII versus, looks awesome,
It's going on 2 platforms so i think it's gonna sell pretty well.
Oh and correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the PS3 version wasn't going to be watered down for the 360. Square has a contract with Sony and they develop all FF games for the Playstation platform, and FFXIII was already in the works before they said they were going to port it to 360, that's the reason why we had to wait. However, this time FF isn't an exclusive so can anyone clear that up??

@ playstation3player & hoof_hearted4
If you've done any research on ports, you will know that porting from the 360, with its 512mb of unified memory, to the PS3, with its 256mb GPU and 256mb CPU memory, has proven to be a limiting factor for developers because on the 360 they ramp up either GPU or CPU memory beyond the 256mb limit of the PS3 as is required for the situation.
I'm always concerned when I see a port from the PS3 that the game has not been maximized on the 360 due to the limited memory on the PS3.
It appears most developers due exploit the 360s hardware, see "thelensoftruth" and Eurogamers "face off rounds".
Eurogamer has around 140 comarisons, playstation3player, have a good read, and when your finished, to quote you, "suck on that".

it's a hundred dollars? damn.

$110 is to much for an import so I'm not gonna get the game, I can't stand the English voice acting.

Ever since playing the demo I have been hooked on just how perfect everything was. I can only imagine how amazing it is in Japan right now for this release. I love how into their games they get when something like this comes out. Well deserved for this one from the looks of it. I guarantee it wont have the craziness in the states as it did in Japan but it will definitely sell out at lots of stores. I am personally celebrating this game Japan style and taking a mini vaca when it arrives here. On a side note I really think hype for games has gone down ever since 2004. The year Halo 2, Half-Life 2, and GTA San Andreas released was probably the most difficult time I have ever had getting a game if I didn't have it reserved and featured some of the most dedicated campers ever. Now I dont even reserve games, I think its a big joke personally. I have yet to ever see any game in the last 3 years sell out completely.

Stay far away from spoilers till next year. Gotta love the internet.
