Video games and the mass media have had a complex relationship for about as long as there have been reasons to talk about games in any meaningful sense. It hasn’t always been civilized or fair, mostly on the part of talking heads whose only knowledge of games comes from uninformed word-of-mouth instead of serious, hands-on time. So what better way to end the decade then to take a look back at some of the mass media's best and worst moments of the past 10 years, and reflect on how far (or not so far) the media have come in their understanding and portrayal of video games.
1. Mass Effect, Fox News and Amazon Ratings Bombing
The spark that ignited this particular powder keg of controversy came when self-help author Cooper Lawrence appeared on Fox News’ The Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, and strongly criticized BioWare’s critically acclaimed sci-fi role-playing game, Mass Effect for reducing women to nothing but sexual objects and giving players the chance to engage in graphic sexual acts. In response to Lawrence’s lies (for which she later apologized), gamers descended on the Amazon page for her book, The Cult of Perfection: Making Peace with Your Inner Overachiever, flooding it with 1-star ratings and vicious attacks on her book as well as her personally. Amazon eventually removed the majority of these ratings and comments, but even today, most of her reviews are 1-star.
2. Virginia Tech Massacre, Counter-Strike and Jack Thompson
Thanks to Fox News (once again) and disbarred anti-violent video game advocate/Looney McCrazy-Balls, Jack Thompson (among others), the primary topic of discussion following the horrific mass shooting at Virginia Tech University in 2007 was the influence of Valve’s first-person shooter Counter-Strike on crazed gunman Seung-Hui Cho. Even though several sources and police examinations of Cho’s possessions strongly indicated that he had little to no exposure to Counter-Strike or other violent video games.
3. PBS Special: "The Video Game Revolution"
This PBS special aired back in 2005, and unfortunately, most of the video segments that remain are small, pixilated Real Player clips, but the essays and articles are still available and encompass one of the most comprehensive and reasoned examinations of the history of video games you’ll likely ever see from a media outlet. Interviews with developers, popular gaming myths debunked and even classic game cheats; the full spectrum of the medium is represented, and this is exactly why PBS is PBS.
4. Wii Media Madness!
When the Nintendo Wii launched back in 2006, it was kind of a big deal. And while it’s expected that the media would be remiss to avoid covering the launch of a new game console, the coverage bordered on creepy-obsessive leading up to the launch. And over the past few years, that adoration has continued to the point where you have programs like The Today Show featuring the console in various segments to show off the wide-ranging appeal of the console. At one point earlier this year, Oprah Winfrey caused minor mass purchasing hysteria when gossip site TMZ spotted her shopping for a Wii in Hawaii, and all anyone could talk about was whether the Oprah effect would cause Wii sales to skyrocket. That of course didn’t happen, but it was definitely worth getting all worked up about.
5. "No Russian," No Problem
After word leaked that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 included a sequence in which players would participate in a horrific terrorist attack in a Moscow airport, gamers everywhere started stockpiling rations, stacking up sandbags, boarding up windows, and securing their anti-violent video game-proof vests in preparation for media hellfire to reign down on their beloved medium. And while Fox News once again attempted to have a “fair and balanced” debate about the game, "No Russian" didn’t generate the media tsunami that everyone expected it would. And it was much appreciated. Then again, it will be interesting to see how the media responds should someone actually shoot up an airport in the near future.

Oh humanity, how you humor me. Especially Fox Most video games right now are a play on reality, games like Hip-Hop music(some of it anyway) is a mirror to the world. America, Russia and others don't like the reflection of their world, our world. As long as the ills in the world exist(drugs, war, bullying, school shootings, terrorism) game developers have the right to take what they see or hear and use it as material for a potentially great story. Violence; don't get me started on that, America was founded in violence, the force exodus of the Native Americans, enslavement of Africans and that's America century(s) ago its still bad now.The woman in the first video talked about how Mass Effect "leaves nothing to the imagination." She somewhat implies that if it's all in your head it's not as bad, which may or may not be true. That statement was a bit preposterous. The age of Tetris is long gone, but then again video games weren't respected back then either.

Okay, Hydrafiend, how can you say they were unbiased in the debate on Modern Warfare 2? In the last minute of the debate, all the Fox guy keeps doing is blowing it out of proportion. He's taking the side of the debate that Jim Steyer didn't go radical enough on. I mean, come on, "If you bring a game into a house, nothing to stop an eight year old kid from becoming a terrorist and shooting people." Really? That's supporting both sides of teh debate?

i dislike those lame people who just want to make video games look bad for their own personally pleasure i mean you know its not for your kids don't buy it thats what the big freaking M is for and nowadays you cant purchase a game without ID anyways if you do buy it for your kids yay for you. get over it. video games are freaking awesome no matter what they say its still going to be on there so :P

I went and bought Mass Effect right after I watched this, just to see what was really true about the game.
For the No Russian segment, the guy who was opposed to it did a better job at defending it then the other guy.
Was this as painful for anyone else as it was for me to watch these segments. I know they're not gamers but could they put forth a little effort to try to find somebody that knows what they're talking about.

Excuse me but who does this b#$%#@ think she is. I m talking about the news lady. What makes her so special to say that this stuff is bad and should be banned (she didn t say it directly but we got the message). This is America people lets try not forget it s the land of the free (well somewhat now). Blondie has no right to say anything and you guys noticed it was a women backing her up???? I wonder why! ITS SIMPLE, ITS UP TO THE PERANTS. If they cant handle their kids, they shouldn t have had children in the first place. Stop blaming the video game industry.

@Jake Gaskill "Then again, it will be interesting to see how the media responds should someone actually shoot up an airport in the near future."
Two things. One "Security officers shoot up defenseless MacBook" http://www.geek.com/articles/c hips/security-officers-shoot-d efenseless-macbook-20091215/
Two "Security scare at Delhi's airport"

So where the heck does that lawyer get his information on video games.Does he have ties in the FBI to how many rampaging phycopaths play video games before they shoot up the school. I would really like to talk to that man and ask him his opinion on my life style. Im glad that finnaly a reporter had the balls to stand up for us gamers though.

Ok guys i am a fan of foxnews but dont always agree with them. Most of the time when they bash video games or something else. BUT Virginia Tech Massacre, Counter-Strike and Jack Thompson IS DONE BY MSNBC check your facts please or look at the logo in the video. While foxnews may have been the first to point it out. Dont bash the network and then post a video from another network supoorting your point for bashing them. So right now it just looks like you guys wanted every video gamer to join in and bash on fox news. That is bias reporting and isnt right at all. You are no better then they are in the matter if that is how you react to having a different view point.

Really all the debate about video games , heavy metal music, piracy, sex, or basically what ever we humans do to amuse our selves, Its all a power struggle. I mean, they, them, those guys have been at it a long time trying to control us or those people to simply turn the masses into sheep.

IcemanMX is correct, one day people my age will be sitting behind the desks with some personal video game experienced under our belts. The current media industry is just afraid of change, they whine about the culture that they have been left out on and lack the ability to believe in others to judge for themselves. If a child cannot judge what is correct v. incorrect, ergo it is not the game but the parent that is the faulty. This aggravates me and I question, is the game the conflict, really? For crying out loud, I remember being at the age of sevenish playing Tenchu decapitating armed individuals (thanks cool gamer-mom!) Now I'm taking politics classes along with 3d modeling & animation. Video games can offer a crash course on life itself if you pay any attention and peel back the layers. Media doesn't bother to do this, media just likes to create hot air to increase viewer numbers. The media itself is more controversy than the games themselves if you ask me..just look at all the nonsense they have been responsible for.

K look, being a republican, i cant watch fox news being slaughtered like this in the comments
Is is bias?
definitly
But is it so wrong to have one republican station after the endless sea of bias democratic new shows?
and dont try to deny there isnt ne
CNN
MSNBC
New York Times
so on son on, the media is mostly run by democrats, i find it very unfair that everyone is attacking fox but not the other stations
i was deffinitly disgusted by the above videos,
Was fox news wrong in these vids? again, definitly
but i think the reason there being is because, 1) there not gamers, 2)there parents, so naturally, they dont understand and are just being protective (except for Jack Tompson, hes an idiot)
i dont really know what my specific point in all this was, i sorta just have a bunch, it just pisses me off to c fox news being slaugthered unfairly
and befor you guys tear this comment up, no im not a hardcore fox news fan, i do like orielly and gen beck, but sean hannity is starting to piss me off, and geraldo, dont even get me started
so yea thats really all i havta say, go ahead thumbs down this, but i really hope atleast one intellegent person will read this and hear me out
buiman11
Oh that first video. Pure ignorance. I'm glad her book got trashed. Waste of air. I always preferred the 'media' keep their distance, they don't belong in our territory.
soujirohasegawa18
the new always have something bad to say about games and crap like this. thats why i hate the damn news -_- they are just a bunch of idiots and retards and i agree with "turdkills"
FatKidsLagIRL
I've been playing video games from Halo CE to GTA 3 to God of War to Gears to Halo 3 and Killzone 2 to GTA 4 to Modern Warfare 2 and not once have i wanted to go out and murder anyone or even think about it. Why is our culture always debated on by backwards morons who probably dont even know how to turn on a console? I agree with Iceman though that our generation will accept gaming as a mainstream entertainment outlet. I mean we're just pressing buttons right? I think there was a time about 70 years going back thousands of more years where humans were doing daily what we do in video games and society didnt even seem to mind. I mean Gladiators killed each other for SPORT while a crowd cheered at two behemoths gutted each other... This world has seen a lot worse than shaggy haired teens pressing buttons in a dark room all day....
nightsnipe
the first video ALWAYS just make me laugh so hard

I absolutely love the Fox News bashing going on. Jake, I appreciate the deliberate attempt to turn this political and to turn this into "look at how bad fox news is", but I've seen plenty of mainstream media (as in CNN, the major networks, etc.) have group discussions on video games in a much more negative light than is discussed here, yet these magically don't appear on this page. The positive "balanced" segment is PBS. Surprise...the public broadcasting station run by hippies is the positive spin. How interesting. Frankly, I don't see what the problem is in discussing the consequences of gaming in reality...it's a legitimate discussion. It's not like Fox News can shut down the video game industry....or can Murdoch single handedly do that? Puhlease. And frankly, as much as you want to bash the bias on Fox News....anybody who can tell me msnbc isn't needs to have your head checked....or CNN for that matter.
Get wise people. I've watched a lot of news, and for the money, I get the most honesty from Fox.
MadMax....
and were did counter-strike become a "training" it has no military or non military training or realistic tactics of shooting people at a school. and why cant people just accept that some people were born crazy or a killer, yeah the game is terrorist against police, that doesnt have to relate to real life it is a damn virtual game... sorry for the people out there that lost someone to those shooting but you cant blame a game for those deaths...

Watching that story of the Wii on MSNBC makes me sad. I miss the old Nintendo so bad.
