Age of Conan

Barbaric MMO Age of Conan is offering a holiday deal of an unlimited trial to all comers who sign up before Jan. 1. The free account allows you to play levels one through 20 gratis, although public chat, in-game mail and forum postings will not be supported with the free accounts--you don't want to make it that easy for gold farmers.

Although I'm probably not going to take advantage of this offer for the same reason I don't take advantage of the "free tastes" offered by local heroin dealers, I do salute and support this method of gaining new customers. Twenty levels is a lot of trying before buying.

Check out the official site for more Conan details.

Aren't the first 20 levels a single player only experience? So isn't it theoretically a completely different product once you actually buy the game and move up that one level?

I suffered through Open Beta of this game and even managed to get suckered into buying the Collector's Edition retail product, so I'm already coming from a bad place when discussing it. Don't let the first 20 levels of what is essentially a solo game fool you into buying the full game!

Also, no MMO should EVER be cross-platform. First, developers will try to dumb down controls to appeal to the lowest common denominator, thereby ruining a potentially positive experience and also most console users don't have a mouse/keyboard, making text conversations slow/nearly impossible.

Warhammer does this as well - They have a free account for levels 1-10 (there's only 40 levels in the full version i think). It's not bad, but warhammer.. well it's Warhammer.

This sounds like a great way to draw some attention (abiet undeserved) back to this product. I, however am a console gamer, and am still annoyed at the early hubris claiming this would be a cross platform (PC/360) game. My PC buddies and I were stoked to be able to wander the Hyperborian Age together, slaying mightily. Alas, twas not to be.

The best part of the game to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.
