We knew it was going to be a big month for Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. How big? The NPD Group numbers are officially in for November: Modern Warfare 2 sold 6,070,000 copies across both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last month. PC numbers aren't available.
It was a massive month for both hardware and software, though. Even though the NPD Group notes the industry was down overall year-over-year, 2008 was a particular impressive year for video games and the downed economy has proven more difficult for games than expected.
Plenty of other games showed impressively in November, including:
- 360 -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision, 4.20M
- PS3 -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision, 1.87M
- Wii -- New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nintendo, 1.39M
- 360 -- Assassin's Creed II, Ubisoft, 794,700
- 360 -- Left 4 Dead 2, Electronic Arts, 744,000
- Wii -- Wii Sports Resort, Nintendo, 720,200
- Wii -- Wii Fit Plus, Nintendo, 679,000
- PS3 -- Assassin' Creed II, Ubisoft, 448,400
- 360 -- Dragon Age: Origins, Electronic Arts, 362,100
- Wii -- Mario Kart w/ Wheel, Nintendo, 315,000
Modern Warfare 2 broke an impressive milestone, as well, achieving the highest first-month sales for a video game -- ever. The record was previously held by Microsoft's Halo 3. The sci-fi shooter sold 3.3 million copies in a single month when it was released in September 2007.
There's both good and bad news in this month's numbers, says NPD analyst Anita Fazier.
"While this year's top-selling item bested last year's by 283%, it couldn't make up for softness elsewhere," she said. "The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year."

Wow, lots and lots of fanboyism going on here lol. Sure it was surprising not to see Uncharted 2 on the list, but i'm pretty everyone has already played it by now. And people probably were waiting for MW2 or AC2 anyways. And dang guys, why are xbox3-sixtards making a big deal over sales numbers?
It's just a game people, c'mon. The Sony price drop hasn't been effective at least 6 months yet, you know. The time it usually takes most gamers who aren't fanboys to become multi-console??

I am thinking about getting Dragon Age origins for the xbox 360. The game looks really good but I have heard their is a big problem with it. When you put 50+ hours in it. The game load/saves my corrupted or damaged your save games.
And then you have to start all over again. Is this true? Has this happened to you?

Makes me feel sorry for uncharted, from all accounts its a great game but it looks like nobody is playing PS3. Oh well, maybe they can jump ship and we'll all get to play Uncharted 3.
I hate to do the fanboy thing but the sony people are so rabid I feel like I have to pushback. If they would just shut up and play their "everything" console I'd leave them alone but I get so sick of them constantly tryig to ride down the 360. Its not Microsofts fault Sony let down their fans with an awful marketing campaign and lack of appealing games. Bitch at Sony and stay out of the Xbox forums.

i have this game on both consoles and i love it ican play the multiplayer with people i know on xbox live and playstation network. so i dont care which console version sells the best this is a kickassssss game.

Ouch! What happend to Uncharted 2? I thought this was supposed to be the "next big game" that was going to push PS3 sales through the roof. Oh well as the old Sony fanboys saying goes There's always next year!

I really am wondering why the numbers on the ps3 are so much lower than 360 this month. The ratio of consoles xbox to ps3 is bout 3:2 ish and yet sales are nearly 3 times as high for the 360 it seems with new releases
I woulda thought with the slim coming out the ps3's numbers woulda been better
I know i'll be picking up copies of uncharted 2 and assassins creed soon enough but the sales numbers will definately be down for the december month

Woot, no Tony Hawk or DJ Hero on the list! Hopefully 2009 will be the end to large, expensive controllers that only work with 1 game.

Anyone else remember Reggie Fils-Aime betting that NSMB Wii was going to outsell MW2, at least on the 360 by the end of the holiday season. Yeah, how's that going for ya Reggie?
(Although I think NPD's only count North America, so it might be slightly better for him globally. But Reggie's losing a bet. No doubt about that.)

Though remember Uncharted 2 did come out in October. But still, in November they couldn't sell more than 315,000, to at least make number ten?

haha i love how some people use these numbers as justification that they bought the right system, instead of basing that fact of the enjoyment they received from playing that system.
so please fanboys rejoice in the fact that you get to participate in the act of gaming, cause a lot of people can't even do that.
