It's that time of year. All the major games media outlets are posting their lists of nominees for many different categories of awards, most importantly Game of the Year. G4 is no different, and Adam has taken the time out of his busy schedule to use this week's Soapbox to explain how our editorial staff determined which games made the cut.

So go check out the complete list of X-Play's Best of 2009 nominees. To find out how they got there, just press play. Are you satisfied with our choices and Adam's explanation? Or do you still think we missed a game that deserved out attention? Let us know in the comments below.

see i like g4 GOTY nominee's and winner because its fair unlike IGN's which i always find to be one side like the E3 Nominee's if you noticed in the platform section almost all of that was nintendo and thats not bad but i bet that wasnt that good to recieve that much praise i mean no luv for Halo,Gears3,KZ3,LBP2,Infamous2 i mean im a ps3 fanboy and everything but i think true xbots and true playstations(that the best one i heard) were kinda peeved at the fact that there games were blotched out by shevelware from the wii

hey sessler... I'm gonna see if I can beat greenboom on this one... Bioshock holds a special place in my heart and I loved the deep philosophical plot it had, so i just wanted to ask you guys... What role can games play in intellectual thought and philosophy? Bioshock's take on Ayn Rand blew me away, and now i hear they're taking on utilitarianism and things of that nature. Overall i think we have seen very little of this explored in games, but it would be great if we could see more like Bioshock. What do you guys have to say about it?

He has said these things over and over before. It seems to me he says nothing really in this soapbox.

GAME OF THE YEAR!!! Well its hard for me to really put in a really decision because i didnt play all of the top 5 games but I would like to see Uncharted 2 to take the spot even though i dont think it will because its a ps3 exclusive and not everyone owns a ps3 and MW2 is multiple platform. Sad thing is, I havent played MW2 yet since my money isnt right at the moment.

I just think of the Game of the Year time is when we award the developers for making extraordinary games. and doing it right. *cough* NinjaBread Man *cough*

I actually think your list is pretty good. I would have liked to see Batman:AA in there instead of Cod:MW, though. MW is good, but it is same-old. Batman is good, but also new and refreshing, and thus more deserving of recognition. You could also swap Dragon Age for Infamous and it wouldn't bother me much. I agree that just being nominated is as important as winning. But even so, I will not be happy if MW wins.

Personally Batman was my favorite game of the year, followed by Dragon Age but I wont be bothered if neither gets nominated or wins. I've always found entertainment awards in general to be kind of pointless since they're so heavily opinion based, sort of like review scores :P

\"Without a winner, we don't know what to talk about\"... LOL or complain about! That's the truth!

I dont know why people get all bent out of shape over lists. It's an aggregate list based mostly on opinion. It's not as though you're not entitled to your own. I still see movies that get lukewarm reviews. It's supposed to be entertainment and not to be taken so damned seriously. Agree or disagree but taking it any further than that is just..well..wasteful.

Yeah there were alot of good games this year. Whether they were PS3/360/Wii exclusive or multiplatform there a lot games that had a lot of work put into them. I think we all lost when RE5, Darkest of Days, and WET came out.

last year i could not agree more about their game of the year pick (fable 2). I own everyone of the game of the year candidates and i be fine with whatever they pick for it. Though i didn't like unchardted 2 as much as i thought i would
