For years now, senior citizens have been finding surprising amounts of joy in the Nintendo Wii, thanks in large part to the easily graspable mechanics and design of Wii Sports. But now Nintendo wants seniors to up their game, and try their hands at some of the Wii’s other hit titles, including Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit Plus and, most importantly, New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
To encourage seniors to expand their gaming horizons, Nintendo will be sending representatives, along with Wii gaming packages, to 52 senior citizen communities across the country. Only 10 communities will actually receive hands-on support from Nintendo reps, but everyone will receive the following collection of goodies:
- One Wii
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Three additional Wii Remote controllers and three additional Nunchuk controllers
- A copy of Wii Sports Resort and three additional Wii MotionPlus accessories
- Wii Fit Plus with a Wii Balance Board accessory
- Mario Kart Wii and three additional Wii Wheel accessories
Now, I can certainly understand the appeal of Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit, but I’m not sure seniors are going to be too into New Super Mario Bros., simply because it is too “gamey” in that it’s exactly the kind of thing most seniors probably think of when they think of video games. And it will most likely take some serious finagling to get elderly gamers past this understandable barrier. Not only that, the game itself requires quite a bit more skill, timing and focus than something like bowling in Wii Sports, which means there are going to be a lot of frustrated seniors, and that won't be good for Nintendo at all. Or, elderly gamers will totally dig it, and never want to put their controllers down.
Either way, it’s a fun little program, and if nothing else, it will keep kids entertained while they visit their grandparents.

My dad, who's almost 80 years old, love Wii Sports Resort but couldn't are less about Mario type games. In fact, i just recently published a post about his experiences with the Wii on my blog dedicated to gadgets and the elderly. I also included a link to this article, because I found your commentary to be insightful. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Nintendo has finally found there key demographic, because everyone knows they haven't put anything out that appeals to anyone of normal gaming age since the N64. Fanboy hate mail commence!!!!

Gotta love how those old broads are wearing Nintendo shirts. That's probably going to be a requirement for as long as old people they play it.

I thinks this is great. It gives senior citizens an opportunity to do something that will keep them and their brains active. People can rip on it all they want be but it really is a good idea.

I love it. Nintendo the old folks system. Kinda hard to fight a game system that is selling millions of systems and copies of new super mario. Nice work promoting the hyper game cube yet again. When is your next big game coming out? Still playing punch out!

What's even scarier is that they have the Wii Vitality sensor on the horizon. All they need is Wii-My Medicine Buddy and voila, a self help elderly care system. Sigh Nintendo, sigh.

All my grandparents died years ago. So did the Wii.

this is one of those ideas that sounds great on paper but will flop in practice... there is a reason why old folks like wii sports and thats because itreminds them of the days when they were young but if nintendo is just trying to up sales for mario....its not gona happen

This will totally make up for their family not coming to visit them.

I hope Nintendo considers most of these seniors have Arthritis. Wii Sports and Wii Fit is not the same as Mario...
