Portal Designer Kim Swift Leaves Valve, Joins Dark Void Developer

One of the masterminds behind Portal, Valve designer Kim Swift, has left the studio. Gamasutra reports Swift has left Valve to become a project lead at developer Airtight Games, who is currently finishing work on Dark Void for Capcom. It's unknown what project Swift will work on, but she will apparently be part of a team creating games aimed at "a more diverse audience."

"I've learned so much and had some amazing experiences at Valve," said Swift in a brief statement regarding her decision to leave Valve. "But when I heard I had the opportunity to work on innovative titles with my friends over at Airtight, I couldn't pass it up."

Swift also contributed to the recently released Left 4 Dead 2.

Portal 2 has never been officially announced, but Swift has alluded to work on furthering Portal within Valve since the game's release. Valve has not yet commented on Swift's departure.

It is ALWAYS a good thing when this happens, you guys all know how many big-name developers came from founders who left other big-name developers. BUNGiE, VALVe, Epic, damn near every single one.

she must have left due to valve not being able to program the PS3 and she wants her game to reach more people and give PS3.

Good for her...Now she can be more creative and follow her dreams in an environment that recognizes creativity and parity.
It's hard working for lazy incompetent developers who wont push themselves and rise to a challenge rather than sit in their comfort chair and thinks they have reached the pinnacle of gaming.

She should have made that swift departure long ago....

I also think he left because Valve won't work on PS3 for some dumb reason.

    I see nothing wrong with someone wanting to work with friends at another company;

Hope this person gets what they wanted.

I'm pretty sure this person is female (if I remember correctly)
Some comments assumed it was a guy. There are women in game development after all :)

Valve is one of the most creative and open minded companies besides not releasing games on ps3 and they have a massive following. I don't see why he would want to leave but I guess there's something we don't know

Sad to see such a cool \"new' developer leave Valve, but good for her if it leads to more new innovations like Portal. Valve has such a great track record, I am sure this leaving is less about Valve and more about wanting to be in development more original in terms of what she brought with Portal.

Give your main character a jet pack AND a Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device and now you have got yourself a game!

I can't imagine what games would be more appealing to design than the ones made by Valve.

All I have to say is, if I had a job among the select 200 so people working at Valve, it would take a heck of a pay raise to make me leave.

It will be difficult for Portal 2 to top the original, but if anyone can pull it off, it's Valve. I just wish they would hurry up and release Portal 2 and the next episode of HL2.

In any case; good luck Ms./Mrs. Swift!

Maybe Swift will have a better out put of games now that she's not being held back by the 'Valve Agenda'

This probably has something to do with Valve's thing against the PS3. Either way, I don't think Valve ever planned on following up Portal with a sequel.

I bought the orange box only four months ago, and portal is one of the coolest games i've played...maybe he doesn't like the direction valve has taken.
