X-Play Best of 2009

Hello, dear readers. Here are our 2009 Best of the Year categories and nominees.

This year we utilized a balloting system to form the lists below. Members of the G4tv.com and X-Play editorial staff ranked 5 games in each category, with “1” counting as the superior game. The votes were tabulated by awarding one vote for each game, with the 5 games with the most votes making the final lists. The weight of the rankings was used for tie-breakers with the lowest-ranked score making the list.

In the case of Best RPG, Sports Game, Handheld Game, Fighting Game, Music Game and Racing Game categories, smaller groups of staffers were formed to evaluate the year’s releases specific to that category. Those lists were either voted on as described above, or formed by consensus.

As you can see, there are games on the lists for Game of the Year that may have received a score lower than a 5. This is because eligibility for consideration was only that the game was released before December 1st, 2009. Games are reviewed by an individual, these nominations are formed by the participation of many.

The winners in all the categories will be announced on X-Play on December 15th, 6:00PM EST. Also, starting on December 14th and running all week long, members of X-Play and G4tv.com will reveal their own personal top five favorites for 2009 -- so start stretching your typing fingers and dry clean your Judgment Caps.

Is anyone else laughing at Halo: ODST being nominated for best multiplayer? I hope they are not referring to the competitive multiplayer, that's from a few years ago when Halo 3 came out. They also can't possibly mean Firefight, that's pretty much impossible to play unless you have 3 other friends ready to play with you. Didn't G4 just put out an article about that major flaw?

My game of the year is a tussle betwen Batman and Dragon Age. Both excellent games that I really enjoyed, although niether set my world on fire like Half Life 2, or Rome: Total War did years ago.

Also, Halo ODST for best soundtrack? What? Did you just run out of games with music in them? ODSTs music is awful, and I usually love Halo's music.

It's pretty obvious cod modern warfare 2 will take the goty solely because its a multi-plat release, and all members making the final decision will choose it as everyone will have played it. Personally I'd give it to ACII or U2, but thats just the way g4 works :P

I think GOTY should go to Uncharted 2, although i think MW2 might take it home. Surprised to see Madden 10 didn't make it as a nominee for Best Sports Game, but i think it should go to Fight Night Round 4

i didnt buy MW2 nor will i ever and i know it should be game of the year its a multiplayer game ONLY...i only own a PS3 (and a pc) and i havent bought UC2 yet (but i will) and i know it should win goty...or infamous because i have played that and i can give opinions on it where UC2 i cant, but i still know UC2 should win

First let me sya Yay for Uncharted 2, a whole lot of noms. that I think it has a good chance of winning except for \"Best Multi-player\", and of course \"Game of the Year\" is close. inFAMOUS has a nice amount of noms. another favorite of mine. Forza, is probably gonna take\"Best Racing Game\" but I like Need for Speed: Shift always been a fan, well except for that one illegitimate child(Undercover) oh and some others.

I like the list overall. My only two issues are that Arkham Asylum should be nominated in the game of the year category. Also, why nominate five games for best music game of the year; only Beatles and GH5 are relevant.
