Letter From The Editor: On The Brink of 2010

That’s it. I’ve played them all. (Okay, mostly the good ones.) The mad rush to get everything under the belt to declare game of the year winners is over and I’m nothing but a more confused man for it. As I write this, we will be beginning the initial balloting to come up with the short lists in our categories which will be posted on the site Monday. You can begin your quibbling then and prepare to crescendo to a fever pitch on the 15th of December when X-Play will have our Best of 2009 episode.

But with all these games behind me it’s time to turn to 2010, and honestly, outside of games, I’m more than happy to put the last decade in a box, never to open again. One of the titles that pleasantly surprises me is Brink, which has been up on our site all week long. I’ve been aware of the game for some time now, but it wasn’t until we received the videos that I fully appreciated how ambitious the title is with campaign-based multiplayer from both sides of the conflict, resulting in the chance that you are actually playing against other people as you proceed through the story. This has been attempted before but has never come to fruition. In fact, it does make me think of Sony Online’s well-intentioned Planetside, but not in the failure way. It puts in perspective that the dream of the MMO-Shooter should be slowly approached with baby steps. Also, I finally put together what the game reminds me of visually: Timesplitters. Check out the videos and lemme know if I’m crazy for thinking that.

Next week, we’ll also be previewing a game that is my most anticipated game for next year…so far: Red Dead Redemption. It’s easy to declare the game "GTA in the old west," but that’s selling its ambitions quite short. I’m one who wishes that the Western got better treatment in video games as the genre is more than fitting for the medium with the established tenets of the loner heroes, dubious morality and threats of violence. There’s an air to a good western that is quite sumptuous, and Red Dead might be the first video game to truly capture that.

So with all this year's games played and the games I’m excited for yet to come out, what’s there to do?  Read a book? Go to a museum? Finally try to make a soufflé?

Nah.

I’ll play more Borderlands.

I'm hoping that RAGE will magically make it out by the end of 2010. Also maybe Quake Arena Arcade? Whatever. I know that FFXIII and Brink are coming out next year, and I'm looking forward to those, as well as Borderlands DLC. Also, the new MoH looks interesting.

Look like I will get a PS3 in 2010 because of God of War 3 and Heavy Rain. But other games like Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy XIII and Bioshock 2; I prefer on Xbox 360. I'm also looking forward to Splinter Cell and Halo: Reach.

2010 just around the corner and I still haven't played Creed 2 or Dragon age. So many good games and so little money. Thankfully I have Borderlands to keep me busy until my rugrats earn their keep. Which will be 2030.......

Im hoping for some really big announcements next year, but I am looking forward to ModNation Racers, God of War III, Brink, Rage, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy XIII, and Bioshock 2. WOW thats a mouthful, at least there are some games to be excited about next year and guess what guys...they aren't all coming out in October and November.

I'm going to guess that CoD:MW2 will probably win game of the year but im not the type of person that really cares if the voting results don't turn out how I think they should. My personal favorite games this year were Dragon Age: Origins and Uncharted 2. Left 4 Dead 2, Demon Souls, Assassin's Creed 2, and Modern Warfare 2 were all also absolutely amazing. The only game I haven't really tried yet that I would like to was Borderlands mostly because I keep hearing how key the co-op aspect is to that game and none of my friends are currently playing it so I don't see the point (looks awesome fun though!).

I hope Dragon Age: Origins at least wins best RPG or something :-P Game was freggin' amazing!

Biggest disappointment: Halo: ODST As a hardcore fan of all previous Halo games, it's fair to say I was not one of those \"I hate Halo for no real good reason\" kinda people. I strongly disliked ODST because of the broken Firefight mode. No matchmaking practically made the game unplayable. You know how hard it is to have 4 friends all online at once wanting to play this game? It's not something you can just sit down randomly and decide to do. Killed the multiplayer aspect for me and my $65 wasn't worth a 5 hour long campaign and 3 new mulitplayer maps.

Red Dead Redemption does look amazing. The new trailer looks fantastic and Rockstar never fails to please me with their games. They have a certain quality standard that is few and far between in the gaming industry now-a-days. I really hope this is the Good the Bad and the Ugly western of gaming, and if it is, well I reckon I may mosey to the store and get it.

i would be good with arkham, or infamous, for game of the year. 1943 should get a special award for only costing $15.

Hmmmm so much to choose from

I probably had the most fun with Borderlands with my friends, so that will get my vote

O and nice mention of Timesplitters, we need another one, also Brink does look like it from the face expressions to the awesome and goofy art

Well my vote is for borderlands, in the category of: best game thats not a sequel!

As for brink it will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. Multiplayer modes need a bit of a shake up, in my opinion.

How about you make a mod about playing borderland and making souffles in a museum without getting caught by a security guard who is happening to read a book.

I personally would give Uncharted 2 the game of the year. However, there are so many good games out now that I think ever good game should be on the list lol.

Red Dead Redemption looks like it's gonna be a great game, can't wait to see more on it. I'm not too crazy about BRINK though. Can't wait to hear their pick for Game of the Year. My pick's Uncharted 2.

I have been waiting for Red Dead Redemption since Revolver came out all those years ago. It was not a perfect game but I still think its the best western genre game. I also can't wait for X-play's picks for game of the year. There are a lot of good games that have come out and I have yet to play all of them. Base on the games I've played I think I'd pick Uncharted 2. It's one of those games that I just wanted to keep playing that single player over and over again.

I'm curious. Since you are in a reflective state of mind, I was wondering if as a game reviewer, do you ever revisit games and reflect on your judgments? Particularly, a game like Borderlands, which has had such an lasting appeal among your staff, is there a case for a reevaluation in some cases? Hey, notice how I didn't remind you of your score for Too Human in my ques.... Damn!
