Morning Hangover -- What's Your Stance On Used Games?

Electronic Arts and Pandemic Studios (or what used to be Pandemic Studios) are hoping gamers will buy new copies of The Saboteur because they'll want to see virtual breasts. In order to unlock said breasts, rather than nearly-bare breasts covered by shaking tassels, you need to purchase a new copy of the game, which comes with a downloadable code for the flesh unmasking. I think it's clever and humorous, though ultimately will probably be pretty ineffective. But, hey, if it convinces a few thousand people to purchase new instead of used, it was probably worth the effort, right?

It's one of several ways the industry is experimenting to incentivize new games, rather than waiting to buy used. People buy used because it's cheaper. It's tough to counter that argument, especially in this economy where we're often forced to pick one game or the other. How often do you purchased used? Do you feel a moral obligation to purchase new? I understand arguments on both sides, but given the state of most people's bank accounts, I also understand how morality is a difficult line to follow.

well I always buy my games new just because I dont like the fact that I have no idea what happened to it before I get it and with used games you only have a week to return is if something is wrong witch is crazy and the used games always have scrathes on the back and I make about 4000 a week after taxes and after bills I still got about 400 bucks spending money so hey if you can afford a New copy why not get it

Ha! Jokes on Pandemic. I happen to think a woman in very little clothing is sexier.

I can agree with both sides of this. While new games are better for the publishers, used games are better for us; the consumers. The prices of new games these days are just too expensive. Then consider the fact that most of these games can be beat withing a 12 hour mark. I am not saying you get everything, but the game can be beat in that amount of time. So really, 60 bucks for a game that can be beat in half a day . . . a little ridiculous. Now wait 2-3 months and the game drops by half or even more . . . now you are talking.

I have done my share of pre-orders, and I do love picking up games that I deem must haves for me. But those must haves ar about one in every 8 games that I own . . .and I have about 60 Xbox 360 games and 10 PS3 games.

I really like what publishers are doing to entice you to buy the new games, but they really need to make sure it is stuff that is worth having, or people atre just going to wait till it is a lot cheaper.

I think that game companies should tie buying new games to ESSENTIAL downloadable content. I purchased Dragon Age: Origins new and they gave me a lovely pair of boots and a memory ring for FREE. Oh my goodness, I had to call everyone I know just to tell them (okay, so sarcasm just doesn't drip in type like it does off the tongue). However, I'm not certain everyone would get so excited about said items. I think a better strategy would be including whole missions or quests that could only be unlocked by purchasing at launch (like the Shale missions for Dragon Age). I wonder if including the \"No Russian\" gameplay only for new buyers would have helped that struggling little chick that is Modern Warfare 2 fly with all the larger birds of prey. Perhaps then they might have actually made money from that tiny indie game (again, the sarcasm just doesn't come across).

I never wait to buy a used game. If i want a game, ill probably buy it when it comes out or soon after. I do buy used games when im bored and i want a new game to play so i search gamestop for something cheap, but that doesnt happen very often anymore.

I don't want to see breasts so they're doing me a favor.

I'm not against buying used. As a collector and regular gamer I simply go for the best deals when they pop up. If GS has a decent selection during their B2G1 sales, great. If TrU or Amazon wants to give me half off a second or $10-$20 credit here and there I'll gladly buy new. Basically whoever can put it in my hands for $30-$40 first. It must be complete though, no messy games.

Used games are the one reason I hope we don't switch straight to digital downloads in the future... ...I mean gamestop, while a huge monoply, still saves me money. If I am going to buy a game, but then want to get rid of it after a little bit of playing; digitaly that would be a 100% loss, but at gamestop a relatively new game goes for ~35$, so roughly 58% loss (based on what your state's taxes are...). And on top of that games have a much steeper price drop in store than online; look at all the digital downloads out on any console and compare them to their used counterparts in store and the price will be substantially lower in store...

...the only real negative is that the developer doesn't get a cut of the money. (But that is why I buy games, that I love, new).

Gamestop is a business, not a charity. Compare to a pawn shop, they're not buying the game to keep, but to sell it for PROFIT. It is sad developers don't get anything from used game sales but it's their fault, either append the law (like movie rentals did) or make games worth paying $50-60. I, a consumer, shouldn't be blamed for their loss if they failed to sell their product for HUGE gain, in the end is my wallet.

I do my homework before buying a game so I don't end up with a bad game/deal. Never buy a game without a review you trust, see if its worth what your hard earned money. The most important factors to a good deal are how long is the game and reply value. I got LostWinds from Wiiware, love it, only around 3 hrs long, only $10, too me was a good deal. MW2 is $60 for 8 hr single player, that alone not worth it, add replay value and THEN it becomes a good deal, I've seen worst 8 hr games for $60 with no replay value, awful. Heck, ask yourself if your really going to play it alot, I got Castle Carshers and got 20+ hrs out of it and its only $12.

Developers should Learn to Sell better. The first Assassin's Creed, good game, NOT worth $50-60 new, scored it used 3 weeks ago for $20. Bioshock, loved it but couldn't buy it at release, 3 weeks ago found it used for $15, the GOTY edition was $20, got it new, a great deal. Fallout 3 was a great game, borrowed it from a friend (yes, borrowed) and was greatly disappointed by the ending of the main quest, was glad I didnt buy it, few weeks back a GOTY edition comes out that includes all 5 DLC, all the of DLC reviews where great, it's an insanely good deal, got it new for $60. I loved Overlord, reviews were not to good, especially about length and replay value, not worth the full price, bought it used for $20, then got good DLC for $10 making it so much worth it used and developers get their cut from the DLC.

If the new price is not right, im not getting it.

    Morality??

So... are we not suppose to sell used cars either? Since car manufacturers make no money off the second sale? It's such a dumb argument and needs to be put to rest. I don't see any other industries crying/whining about this.

I buy almost all my games new on their release day. I figure its my way of supporting a company who comes out with something I enjoy. I can't buy everything I want, but I pick up what gives me the best bang for the buck. There are a few occasions where I'm on the fence. Sometimes I pull the trigger if reviews are positive, while other times I rent through gamefly, and decide whether or not to buy it from them.

I never sell back my stuff either. I've got a big storage bin in my closet with everything from N64 stuff to Atari stuff. Every so often its nice to pull out an old system and have some fun.

As a PC gamer, I don't really have a choice between buying new or used. (Generally, I'll wait anywhere between four and eighteen months after a game comes out, and if it's highly praised, I'll pick it up for cheap.)

But I don't have moral objections to buying games used; in fact, I think it's a pretty good idea. Developers, and especially publishers, want people to buy games new, because that generates the most profits for them. But the existence of a used game market means there are people who are willing to buy the game, but not at a $60 price tag, and there are people who have already bought the game who value it at the offered price by used-game stores like Gamestop. The Gamestops of the world bring buyers and sellers together (the sellers here are not developers, but people who already bought the game and are selling it back), which is a win for the consumers (us, the gamers). If the developers (again, really the publishers) wanted more people to buy the game new, then they should lower the prices. Until then, gamers should buy at the level they value the game, or cheaper; Gamestops will stay in business, and if they run out of used copies, the people who still value the game at the full price can go get it.

Honestly as a recent buyer of a PS3 I've found buying used games is a great way to build up my games library with stuff I missed out on since the PS3 launch. That's my condition for used games; if I missed out on it the first time around I'll buy it used. A game like Arkham Asylum I'll buy new for the DLC that comes with it but what's the point in paying full price for something that's been out for three to six months.

I only buy my games new when there is a reason, which is usually a pre-order bonus of some kind. But usually I get my games new for a used price on gamefly. I just make sure I am one of the first people to get a copy of the game and when I get if I like it I keep it for about $44 dollars, but it is technically new since I was the first to get it. But even on older used games, gamefly gives me a much better deal than gamestop, even more of a trade in value as well.

I have a collection of Both new and used. Currently 9 of the 13 games I own were bought new. Of course I have no problem trading in old/unliked games so I can't point any fingers.

One question though, why is everyone hacking on the player that buys used, but no one cares about the gamer that rents, I think companies probably lose more money because of block buster then game stop. (who hasn't rented a game and then not bought it)

I'll pay full price for boobs, why not. I planned on buying it new anyways so go me. it looks like GTA and Assassin's Creed had an Irish baby and put him in the middle of Nazi controlled Europe? + owning the last game to come out of Pandemic studios is cool too. Also on a side note, I have the same hat and man bag as the main dude so I feel like it's a little me out their kicking ass.

Personally I prefer to buy my games in the contest that seems most appropriate. Let me explain... for big games that I KNOW I am going to want and will want to keep, games that I want to play on day one I don't mind playing full retail price on them... example I want to know how the God of War series ends so I will pick up God of War III new. However for most games I prefer going used for the simple reason that it saves me money, I get a limited warranty on game quality, and if I really like the game I see it as me giving a good game a new home (kind of like adopting a animal from the pound, only its a video game).

To me there needs to be a fundamental shift if producers want everyone to buy their games new, one that we will probably never see. Part of the reason we wont is this shift would eat into their profits, and that this would mean that the game makers would have to become more involved with their audience instead of saying \"this sold, so if we do it again it will sell again\". The first thing that needs to change... new games need to have a return policy in place where you can get your full payment for the game back.

I'm sorry I've seen too many games that held so much promise, looked just incredible, and the demos were mind blowing, but then when you actually play the game they are terrible. The demo were the ONLY good parts in the game, or what reporters saw at E3. This is disappointing at best as you may guess, and the ONLY recourse that people have is to sell these bad games at GameStop or similar stores, and possibly write the company.

Secondly the games need to come down in price. Yes I know it costs a small fortune to make a game (generally speaking) but at $60 for a new game, here in Oregon where I live, you have to work 10 hours after taxes (at minimum wage) in order to pay for a game. (for those into the math: 8.50*.70=5.95, 60/5.95=10.08) That means you have to work more then a single day to pay for one of these games, and in a time of high unemployment 10 hours may be half the hours that you are working in a week... that means the game has to provide an mind blowing experience to be worth while.

I however have worked at GameStop and have seen the mark up, and have to agree, that the company is working diligently at bleeding its customers dry and dislike purchasing from them. I have literally seen the company buy a game for 3 to 5 dollars, then turn around and sell said game for 15 dollars or more, 300% mark up on used games (purchase price vs. sell price) is not only normal, but common with them, especially on games that are new-er but not not brand new, nor bargain basement level of value.

GameStop does provide a service, and one that is worth while, for people who can't afford purchase new games, and for people who constantly turn around their games. However people do need to be aware that in purchasing used they arn't supporting the makers... so if you like the game and can afford it buying new (even if its only after its been discounted) is a way show support.

I prefer to buy my games new, but rarely get to because I'm putting myself through college and am on a budget (its not as bad as I just made it sound). So I buy new when I can, but usually buy used.
