Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

Electronic Arts and Pandemic Studios (or what used to be Pandemic Studios) are hoping gamers will buy new copies of The Saboteur because they'll want to see virtual breasts. In order to unlock said breasts, rather than nearly-bare breasts covered by shaking tassels, you need to purchase a new copy of the game, which comes with a downloadable code for the flesh unmasking. I think it's clever and humorous, though ultimately will probably be pretty ineffective. But, hey, if it convinces a few thousand people to purchase new instead of used, it was probably worth the effort, right?
It's one of several ways the industry is experimenting to incentivize new games, rather than waiting to buy used. People buy used because it's cheaper. It's tough to counter that argument, especially in this economy where we're often forced to pick one game or the other. How often do you purchased used? Do you feel a moral obligation to purchase new? I understand arguments on both sides, but given the state of most people's bank accounts, I also understand how morality is a difficult line to follow.

I don't buy used games because GameStop sells the newer titles for only 5 bucks cheaper than new. Why not spend the extra money to get the new? As for the redeemable codes on new games for things that matter (UFC Undisputed 2010, for instance), I'm okay with. As long as the price is justified. I know lots of people that complained about the MW2 map packs being overpriced, but I gladly paid 15 bucks for them. I bought them the day they came out, and I just finished playing on them a few minutes ago. 15 bucks for something that I use around 20 hours a week? Count me in. I'll be getting the new maps tomorrow too. DLC that is useful, and has a good price/play ratio, I'm game. As far as boobs go, I'll have my girlfriend sit topless next to me while I play the Resurgence map pack when it releases tomorrow.

I buy my fighting games new, everything else I will get used. I could care less if people return games to game stop and then someone buys there old game. It's good business.
We could go back to buying a game and then getting stuck with it. Or we could have RED BOX make a game rental machine. Or the old return method this game is broken I want my money back.
If you don't want games to be returned make them downloadable only, with a really nice demo. I have bought games I never would have played because of a demo and pulled reserves of games because of crappy demos.

I hardly ever buy new games. I think its stupid, quite honestly. I know its how the industry makes its money, but I can not justify dropping over $60 for a new game. To me its about as smart as buying a new car: once you drive it off the lot, its value is way depreciated. A used car in good condition still has tons of value & will save you thousands. I actually have a distaste for DLC for this very reason: its something I bought that I can not sell back to anyone. Quite annoying.
Its one thing to go see a new movie for $7 (I live in the Midwest & typically go to matinees), but $60 is a few weeks of groceries for me. I find it typically irresponsible. Now, if a person is making bank for where they live & have lots of throw away money, sure, go buy new. For those of us where it is questionable if we should even be spending our money on games when we should be paying off debt/saving/paying rent: BUY USED.
Also, I find it interesting all these people using Gamestop as a reference to not buy used or how bad a company it is. You don't like it, buy elsewhere. I do about 80% of my game buying on ebay. I got Red Faction: Guerrilla for less than $20 less than 6 months after release (& honestly it wasn't worth more than that), similar story with FEAR 2, HALO 3 & on & on.

Steam is going to kill used games anyway. The game is locked to your Steam account, so you can't give it or sell it to anyone.

I buy both new and used, though I prefer to buy new games. On a side note, can't people who buy The Saboteur used still get the DLC?

I like to buy my games new to assure a booger free experience when opening the box.

It sucks because as a gamer I want to support the industry anyway I can, but when I see a used game with a significantly lower price than a brand new one I can't help but go with that deal. It's worse now because a few years ago I thought the developers still got some profit from used games from stores like gamestop but now I know gamestop don't give a hoot about the developers! Life is like a Bioware game with all these moral choices...

First of all, I hate places like Gamestop because they rip the consumer, especially little children. The buyers of used games could benefit the most as long as the games work because they do not have to pay full retail price.
However sometimes Gamestop sells recently released used games for $54.99 when Amazon.com sells for the same game(s) new for the same amount. The seller has the most to lose because you are losing a lot of your original investment. It is like selling a car.

While I usually buy my games new, it isn't out of some misplaced moral obligation felt toward publishers or developers. It is not only legal but completely fair and expected in capitalism to let the market decide how much they are willing to pay for things. It is also fair for the publishers to try to incentivize buying new games. No one seems to mind when automakers only get paid on the first sale of their prodyuct, so no one should mind when publishers and developers only get paid upon first sale of their product as well. I consider myself to be a considerate consumer so I try to make sure that the place I do business benefits from my business as well as the manufacturer of whatever it is that I am purchasing. When it comes to games, most of the shop owner's profit is made on the sale of various accessories and used games. I make sure to spread my dollars around to all involved. That said, I do believe that the empire that became known as gamestop is disproportionately slanting dollars in their favor with the way that they handle used games. Unsavory, but not immoral or illegal in my opinion. That is also why I don't usually buy used games, especially from them. The value they offer by giving a $5 discount is not compelling enough to make me give them the sale. Particularly because they make such a large margin on used games and push them along with preorders upon everyone. Or at least they try. Therefore, they get accessory purchases from me along with the occasional used game since this is more than enough to keep them in business. The publishers and developers get the benefit of 95% of my gaming dollars with the new game purchases. Pheew! Diatribe over. : =)

I've never had an issue with used games, hell, I even worked at a used game retailer. The big thing is that games are just too expensive in all respects. I'm only willing to shuck out the cash for games I expect to deliver when it comes to $60 on the line, but lower the cost to 40 or 30 and I'm more inclined to lower my guard on my wallet.
FightOn72
I always buy new, but I don't see a morality issue here. It isn't illegal to purchase used games, so I don't understand how it would be immoral for someone to do so. The publishers may not be making as much money as they want, but they're still making money.
Firm_B
i would be more willing to buy a used game if they were not 5$ cheaper then a new one
sampsell243
I only buy new for one reason...I HATE having anything wrong with my disc...Used games often have issues shortly after purchase...

The Saboteur looks cool but I always check the reviews of almost every game i get.Because games like the saboteur that get just ok reviews x play-3/5 ign-8.2/10 I buy used cause when you buy used you get 7 days to take it back if u dont like it.but games like left 4 dead 2 or modern warfare 2 i know that i'll like it cause i liked the first one.but games like ghostbusters which was just ok, i wanted it,got it used, beated it,and took it back.and i dont care about video game boobs.Saboteur I'm getting it used

I beleive that it is too much money for a single game but in the end its the sharing and used sales that hurts the profits. To take into account for that and counter it there needs to be a middle ground. You can't just expect people to pay up when a little patience (sometimes just a day or two) and you can save 5 bucks.
Add that we all share our games to be able to experience great games we can't afford. Or just plain trade them in for a some cash to get another one.
I don't like used games but I see them neccesary for everyone I know to be able to play them.
Digital sales could be PART of the answer by making them cheaper and affordable up to half the price but to be able to share and move around then pay up to get a physical copy. How bout that?
That is not asking too much right?
cryfordawn
I got an idea, HOW ABOUT MAKING THEM AFFORDABLE for everyone. A $20.00 game price pretty much puts used stores out of business. I wouldnt mind see gamestop GONE. They are leeches

Boobs...I like Boobs.

Only used games I have purchased have been pretty old when I got them. And got them used cause buying it new would require special ordering it online. Only one i specifically remember getting used was Red Dead Revolver. and i got it in like 06 or 07, when it came out in 04. Enough of a time laps to make it fare I think. Equivalent of waiting to get a movie from the 5 or 7 dollar section at walmart when it was 20 when it came out 3 years ago.
Only thing I don't quit get is why game publishers care, or game developers. It is probably cause I don't know the inter workings of video game sales structure. But I'd assume that the developer selling the game to a retailer counts as there sale. and then its on the back of the retailer to sell it to a customer. Publishers sell it to a middle man and get the profits up front don't they? If this is true, why would they care if Best Buy purchases it and it don't sell off there shelf cause someone bought used?

I buy used games for \"old\" games, like Dead Rising or Vice City. If it's a recent release, I buy the $60 copy.
I liked how Gears of War 2 gave you a code for to play on some classic GoW1 maps. Too bad the multiplayer is laggy garbage.
