Ubisoft Announces Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Release Tied To Movie

Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will introduce Jordan Mechner's world to a larger audience next May, but video game players are going back, too. Though last year's Prince of Persia reboot appeared to move the series in a new direction, Ubisoft has just announced Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, which brings the series back to the original storyline.

"This new installment in the critically-acclaimed franchise marks the return to the Prince of Persia Sands of Time storyline," reads the press release. "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will feature many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand."

As an unabashed fan of the recent Prince of Persia, I have to express some disappointment over Ubisoft's decision to take a step back. If the new Prince of Perisa retains the excellent gameplay innovations from the last installment, such as the refreshing removal of a game over screen, then I'll have fewer reservations. A tie-in makes sense. The last Prince of Persia wasn't perfect, but it was clear the team was allowed to try new things, which should be applauded and rewarded.

But I'll say this: more platform-based action games isn't a bad thing.

The movie debuts on May 28, 2010. Ubisoft will release the new game in May, too. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will be released on currently unspecified consoles and handhelds.

So does this mean that the reboot is getting the boot permanently, or is this simply an attempt to cash in on the movie release with a tie in by going back to the old Prince?

A tie-in game for a Disney movie? Personally, I am in complete shock! (end sarcasm)

In all seriousness, I'm on the fence. The last Prince of Persia was pretty good, despite the awkward combat sequences and the less-than-stellar plot. Since Ubisoft made the Sands of Time trilogy anyway, I bet they know what they're doing. On the other hand, I can't help but feel this is being rushed. Prince of Persia came out last year, and already we're seeing a new Prince of Persia game on the horizon?

Eh, I'll just wait and see how it turns out. If the game's good, awesome. If not, oh well.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed by this news. I loved the 2008 Prince, despite its flaws. Yes, the combat became a QTE fest further in, the platforming was a little too easy. I don't get the complaints about how you \"couldn't die\", though. The way I see it, Elika saving you was just a less irritating load screen. You fail a jump or a fight, the game reloads you to the last check point. Same thing would have happened if you \"died\".

I'd have preferred they continued the current story, and built upon and improved the mechanics they used, rather than retread what they've already done. I think part of it might have a lot to do with what has been discussed many times on \"Feedback\", that developers are less likely to take risks right now.

To be fair though, they haven't even shown the game yet. I don't really care what they do in the end, as long as the game is fun, and Ubi has rarely let me down in that regard. We'll just have to wait and see.

I loved the game Prince of Persia The Sands of Time (PS2) but the sequels as well as last years Prince of Persia were not as good. The combat from last years POP was awful. You didn't feel in full control of your character and the enemies were boring. Although, I did like the platforming and art style. In Sands of Time the combat was fluid and fun. I loved launching off surfaces during fights. If the next game can improve the combat I could get into a new POP game.

here here mr. klepek! as a fan of the series over all (and as a person who was thinking about weather or not they'd stick with the new prince just last night) I am glad to see another person who actually enjoyed the new one (i think that makes us part of all of 15 people!) however, as long as they let players get away with some awesome monkey business then it should be fine...wonder if they'll bring back the rewind...wonder if it'll be in a dagger or an amulet...

Alright, good to see the return to Sands of Time Trilogy, the PoP games that were actually good. All of the changes that the newest PoP brought hurt the game. You couldn't die, which reduced the challenge a bit, the innovative sands of time element was removed, the combat was complete trash, and the new characters were too Americanized, making it a bit hard to take them seriously. The soundtrack was pretty good, but I'd put gameplay over sound anyday.

If there had ever been questions about the Prince's sexuality.. Ubisoft being in favor of casting Jake Gyllenhaal for his part in the movie certainly settles things..

HUGE fan of the \"Sands\" storyline, and am pumped to be returning to it. Let's just hope its not on the Wii and DS. Blah. Let's have a real game here Ubisoft!

I am really looking forward to the new Prince Of Persia game coming out next year. I really enjoyed the last prince of persia game, but the games combat system got a little tiring. However, i think that it is great that Ubisoft decided to go back to its roots.

I enjoyed some of the graphical style of the last Prince, as well as the platforming in general and the lack of the game-over, but I have to say, I missed the sands, and I got extremely tired of the combat system. It felt much less dynamic somehow, I don't know, I just ended up spamming the same combo and not having to use the environment or enemy positioning.
