I find the idea of PC and Mac MMO EVE Online vaguely terrifying. There's something so cool, and seductive about it, but I'm afraid I'll start playing it and never stop. So, like heroin, I've never tried it. Anyway, they keep putting out expansions to the game for free. Check out the latest: Dominion.
What do you think?

I suppose never having to pay for an expansion should go up there too....
Skill training by passage of time, allowing you to progress even if you can't actively play that week, month.... just stop in once in a while and check your skill queue. ...
Free Test servers allowing you to see upcoming expansions and new features before they are implemented is fun....
But that damn learning curve.... and keeping busy....

I prefer to think of it as reskinned Excell rather than a simulator.... but that's nitpicking ^^
4+ years of pain, and a learning curve like the Marianas trench.
Game is what you make of it, you can go out and join groups of thousands, fight in fleet battles or be the lone wolf picking off the edges, or form a small strike team terrorizing the 'safe\" areas for a laugh.... Make your own entertainment.
You can make good money doing any. (just keep your tinfoil hat stapled to your head)
What keeps me in eve.
1) One world. All players in one server like a giant dysfunctional family with guns and a grudge. 25-50k players online at any given time. I just can't step back from that size of world, to a smaller server.
2) PLEX/GTC (Pilots License Extension/ Game time cards) - The ability to pay for your MMO addiction, simply by devoting enough time to buy 30 day time cards with In-game currency.
Conversely, They effectively normalized part of the currency-seller's Angle, you can buy game cards with cash, and sell them for ISK. As long as you use the CCP systems, and not weird direct trades, you won't be scammed. It's not a perfect solution, but the game survives.
Earning the isk is NOT hard, about 300m give or take a month, easily achievable with a few days of easy work once you have some skills built.
I haven't paid for Eve since '06 ^^. Free is a very good price.
DUST514 coming for the consoles, it will be interesting to see how far CCP can leverage themselves when they link their shooter-thing with the MMO.
Fly safer than your targets folks.

boring boring game
The Emperor's Champion
EVE is pretty good and keeps getting better and better all the time, but soloing the game it is kinda boring. As with most MMOs, it's better with some friends, but unlike other MMOs, EVE gets exponentially better the more people you have, as opposed to WoW(for example) where after a certain point more people just don't make the game any funner or change how it plays.
I really look forward to when DUST 514 and the expansion that lets you get out and walk around come out. This game is already almost infinitely huge and deep gameplaywise, and the future only promises to be bright and to bring even greater things.
I do agree that the game lacks personality on it's own, but what I suspect BoydofZINJ is missing is that this game is truly defined by the players, and other player corporations, allies and enemies are where the game's personality are. The galaxy of EVE truly functions like a real world (not THE real world) would. Empires rise and fall thanks to players, the economy likewise. When players control everything, the raw materials, the research, the production, the construction, the configuration, the star systems, the constellations, the galaxy....what is there left for the game to do exactly other than simply exist, and perhaps teach noobs how they fit in(if another player isn't already doing that)?

CCP is a great developer. The game is okay. It lacks a personality. I am hoping the Star Trek MMO will solve this by giving us the ability to see our characters. As much as I loev star ships and scifi... I could never get into EVE longer than a few months at a time. I love the sandbox feel and the ability to master anything given time. However, the lack of personality always got me. That and NONE of the combat looks anything like the video. it is mostly about staring at a fixed stargate for hours on end and running away if they had more than 3 ships than you and then charging when you got more and then the enemy runs away. But many pvp mmos are similar - the zerg mentality.

I have played this for several months, my favorite game I have played. There is so much potential for this game as well, and CCP is a great developer.
I plan on being a player there for years and years to come.
