This week, we have much to be thankful for. One thing we should all be thankful for is the fact that Adam Sessler takes the time out of his busy schedule each week to let us know what's on his mind. This week, Adam is going to respond to some of your criticisms about the recent scoring of Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2. Many of you pointed out that these sequels have improvements over their predicessors, but got a lower score. Press play to find out why.

Numbers don't amount to anything and reviews don't either. If you like a game then you like the game. But I would like to see the score system die just because it's always the first thing you see when you look up a review.

I agree with EKG in that it's time to stop complaining about how much the numerical system sucks and actually DO something about it. I feel like this subject comes up like clockwork around here and the only things are going to change is if people somehow collectively get more intelligent overnight OR if Xplay gets rid of the stupid antiquated number grading system altogether.

why didnt MW2 or ODST get a 4/5 both had a small campaign and both felt like they didnt not do enough to improve on gameplay or anything it was the same old show and dance. most people i talk to said that odst sucked. people got bored of mw2 after 2 days. so really why didnt they?

thank you for this. in fact, you should probably just re-release this video a couple times a year just so people can understand. 4 is good, just not AMAZING. here are some other reasons why the 1st AC and L4D got higher scores I think:
1) they were new ideas with the first ones, now they are established franchises.
2) developers were still learning about the hardware during the first ones.
3) therefore, we were more forgiving with the first ones, and more expecting with the sequels. so much so, that it affected the score. ratings apply to the time period, otherwise all of today's games would be 5 regardless simply because of the graphics compared to that of games in past generations.

Here's how I've perceived the numbers:
1/5 - The game is horrible; please read the review, we worked really hard on it! PLEASE!?! *big cute puppy dog eyes*
2/5 - The game is not good. Something about it's play-style, genre/license or story might appeal to you, so read the review to find out.
3/5 - The game is good, it might be the perfect game for you, read the review to find out.
4/5 - The game is really good, but it might be the wrong game for you, read the review to find out.
5/5 - The game is excellent, but be warned not all games for are for all gamers, so read the review and we will do is tell you why it's excellent, and how it might not be perfect for everyone.

Take Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin's Creed 2. They're both 4 out of 5. Forget what you know about the two games. If you just left it all up to the number system you'd be saying Left 4 Dead 2 to Assassin's Creed 2 are equally the same game. Which is completely false. However, I do agree on the Left 4 Dead 2 getting 4/5. I have in depth reasons but I will not state them because even if I do I'm just going to get criticized on the fact that I said 4/5 instead of 5/5. God forbid you actually READ about VIDEO GAMES. It's not like we're asking you to read about the Spanish Inquisition.

i think the people who reviewed the origionals should also review the sequals. i also don't think it should be 1 persons opinion. many loved assissians creed and many hated it. we should either get a second opinion or they reviewer should ask others to play the game and get their opinions.

I think a salient point is that when Assassins Creed and Left 4 Dead came out, they were 5/5's in the fact that they were fresh new takes on game types that we all know and love (first person shooter and open-world). However, especially after the flurry of games that have been released in the last few months, these games are still great, but the bar has been raised. The original games raised the bar themselves when they were released (and both later garnered criticism based on their repetitive nature, so they may not have been 5/5's a few months after they were released).
What I'm trying to say is, as Adam said, times change. The game industry evolves for the betterment of gamers (it really is survival of the fittest-esque natural selection of gaming). So while a game might have pushed games forward as a species, its sequel has benefited from that push, but probably isn't as innovative as the original game. Plus a 4/5 is a REALLY good score. Especially in this game climate of juggernauts.

I was one of the people who posted thier suprise on the site. not that i didnt realize 4/5 was a great score, not that i didn't think it was justified after reading both reviews,I was simply suprised that the game didn't entirely live up to my expectations (although both are amazing games and I strongly reccomend picking up either or both)

Hey Adam..I give that Soapbox A 5/5.

lol, adam is right... there's never enough gravy

I love watching these since you see a more personal side of Adam lol.
But I am happy bother Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 got a 4/5, not because of the fact that I think they deserve it, but because this does show that even in the midst of hype they are still willing to give the game a lower number score then what people want.
Bulbachar
That's something that drives me nuts about some people when they compare scores for different games. It doesn't matter that they are both good games, and reviewed by different people, but because one got a little better score, it is somehow better than the other game. I think it's more of a problem with scoring with a 10/10 point system rather than a 5/5 point system. A good example is if a game gets a 9.0 on IGN and then another game gets a 9.5, you get idiots that act as if the 9.5 is dramatically better. On a 5/5 point system, they both are probable a 5.
chantler
People, start listening to what is being said and not so much on what number score the game gets.
Here is how I do things. First I look at the score, then I read the pros and cons that the reviewer had and then I read/watch the review of the game. Once I have all that information I now know what that game is like and weather or not I will like it. Even if game get 4/5 or 5/5 I look at what the game is all about. cause some game I'm not going to like even if they are very good quality. Halo: ODST is one of these games. I believe it was given a 5/5, I just played the game not more then 20 mins ago for the 1st time and I didn't like it at all. Keep in mind that I love Halo games, it is what made me buy an Xbox when the first released.
So just read and pay attention and forget the score, use that as a general feel of the game and not weather YOU are going to like it or not.
Well said Mr. Sessler, you are my hero.
BigKevSexyMan
I tend to like the idea of the review score. However, it's not necessarily about comparing different games.
When I read a review of a game that I have played, I like to compare what you gave the game vs what I think I might have given the game. When we tend to consistently agree with that measurement, it tends to build trust and a relationship between myself and that reviewer(or network of reviewers). That trust is very important to myself as a consumer.
This way, whenever I'm on the fence on if I should buy the game, and when a network that I trust gives a positive review of that game, then I know that I probably will enjoy that game, and can feel safer spending that money.
Of course you don't necessarily NEED the number score to do this, but it makes it easier to compare my opinion and yours, in order to build that trust.

The are recommendations that define roughly how many people will enjoy the game. For example, left for dead 2 is not recommended for those who don't have friends to play with, demon's souls is not recommended for those who hate playing tough games. Some games aren't for everyone and they don't earn the 5/5.
THANKS FOR THE MAG BETA G4!!!
