The zombie craze has invaded every aspect of popular culture from movies to music to video games. But the shambling undead have yet to find their way into the MMO space. It seems like a no-brainer: The burned out post zombie-infection world is a compelling setting, and a worldwide mindless horde of countless ghouls makes for perfect enemies in an MMO. Plus, as Left 4 Dead and Zombieland have shown us, working together with your friends to survive an invasion of undead is double-ultra-super-fun.
Undead Labs, a Seattle based company, has apparently recognized these possibilities and plans to create a zombie-based MMO for consoles. Hmmm... interesting.
The company's founder, Jeff Strain, knows MMOs. He worked as a team lead on World of Warcraft, and founded Arenanet. Here's how he described the appeal of a zombie multi-player game:
“Every time I see a good zombie movie with friends, we spend days debating our strategies for surviving the zombie apocalypse,” said Strain in a press release. “The police station or the supermarket? Garden rake or staple gun? Bach or The White Stripes? I’m a game developer, so I’d probably be useless for anything other than ghoul bait, but I’m excited to have the opportunity to build an MMOZ that lets us put those strategies to the test and find out for sure.”
All very, very interesting. As of yet, there is no release date, console list, details or much of anything else, other than a shining, pure idea. I'll try to dig up some more details and get back atcha, though, I promise.
