Modern Warfare 2 Outsells Call of Duty 4 On PC

Modern Warfare 2

According to Infinity Ward’s creative strategist Robert Bowling, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the PC "outsold the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in its first week," thereby making it "the most successful PC version" to date.

Clearly, Gamasutra has been duped by Bowling’s IW forum post, because as we all know, countless PC gamers boycotted the game and vowed not to buy it because of its lack of dedicated servers. And when people boycott something, especially the most highly anticipated game of the year and the sequel to a game that said boycotters supposedly loved to no end, you know there is nothing that will make them change their minds.

That is unless some crafty hacker finds a way to access the game’s developer console, thereby allowing people to play multiplayer via dedicated servers. Of course, accessing the dev console means people can cheat, and since games played on these "servers" are somehow technically still legit, there are a whole bunch of cheaters out there with some mighty impressive looking stats at the moment, but I guess that's cool with everyone. Although, as Destructoid reported last week, it’s only a matter of time before IW at least tries to put a stop to all of this.

For now though, it seems that all those people who vowed never to give Activision another cent, unsurprisingly, ended up doing so. Well done, boycotters. Well done.

Any previous Modern Warfare 2 boycotters end up buying the game after word spread about the dedicated server hack?

notice how there hacked dedicated servers now.

I know a few clans who bought the game simply to hack ingame and make IWnet so enjoyable to players that they demand dedicated servers

OK Activision OK just go on and piss off more boycotters, keep touting your numbers of great sales, I'll just go around and spread word about how to download your game off of Piratebay.com and we'll see who wins by the end of the year, not by the "end of the week" - a week filled with more hype than a schizophrenic crack addict jumping into a fresh dumpster of discarded morphine needles.

Sigh, I still and will not buy this game. It is too bad there are a bunch of sellouts out there. But I still won't believe anything until I see the NPD numbers. I still believe the game sold under 100,000

Even with the knowledge of IW.Net I still bought the game. I'm not going to let ONE feature prevent me from buying the game. I still absolutely hate IW.Net more than I hate everything else evil put together, but IW.Net isn't going to prevent me from buying the game. Hands down it's still a 8 out of 5 game. Could've been a 10 out of 5 game if it wasn't for IW.Net. Catch my drift?

G4- Spreading the BS lies that all PC gamers are cheaters, one day at a time.

maybe you just suck LOPster? I snipe very successfully all day long. As long as you don't sit in the same spot and keep moving, its pretty damn good.

Anyone that is a CoD fanboy, I dare you to go try BF:BC2 and tell me its not better than MW2.

Multiplayer in MW2 is small, cramped levels with tons of campers, noobtubers, bunny hoppers, LAG, host disconnects, and cheesy aircraft kills. I used to snipe all the time in CoD4.....NO one snipes in MW2. I saw one person doing it in free-for-all. Maps just aren't big enough.

The singleplayer is alright but nothing extraordinary. Plenty of other games set the bar higher.

Even dedicated servers would not sway me to buy the game.

BF:BC2 has HUGE maps, dedicated servers, can actually snipe, maps are too big for campers, no lag, VEHICLES, destructible environments, the sound is absolutely out of this world, graphics that are way better than MW2....I could go on for days.

JUST TRY IT. A lot of places still giving out codes. I have an EU code sitting around.

If MW2 wins game of the year from G4tv......just pitiful.

i have not fallen prey to the peer pressure. i said it before and ill say it again. I WILL NOT BUY THIS GAME. Activision has to do alot more for their next game if they want me to buy it, otherwise i think ive moved on from the COD series. even if IW and activision come out with a patch to allow dedicated servers, i still dont think i would buy it. imo, they messed with the gameplay too much in order to allow more casual players to join in. the deathstreaks are a joke. the camping that this games forces people to do is just aggrevating.

i will stick to Uncharted 2 for my multiplayer fixes. i hope EA doesnt mess it up with the Medal of Honor series. i hope they are making the game to reinvent the fps genre and not just cash in because of how well modern warfare did.

Didn't buy it, and I don't plan too. Waiting for BC2 for pc to enjoy some nice multiplayer.

And as LOPster said, you guys on G4TV seem to change more and more...95% of your articles are console related and about 70% of those are xbox 360 related and PC is basically non-existant.

I understand that its your choice of what you publish and stuff, but you guys are saying that we "whine" and stuff and yet I haven't seen one editor from the G4tv staff playing the PC version of MW2 and posting an article about it.

And because so many people said that they won't buy the game that doesn't mean that ALL PC gamers said they won't buy the game...could be useful if you think for a second before you say stuff like that.

I've seen casts of people playing the game end-to-end in single player, and I wonder...do you guys at G4 REALLY and I mean REALLY consider that to be a story worthy of 5 stars? Not saying its bad...but its far from a 5 star story.

I wonder if he meant week-one vs week-one numbers or if MW2 actually outsold all CoD4 sales in MW2's first week.

I seriously doubt the latter, but it's possible.

I for one did not purchase MW2 and am absolutely glad I did not. I've played it on the PS3 and its laggy and theres no customization in what you can play.

Happily playing the Bad Company 2 beta.......which is a MUCH better game. D

I could care less about MW2's numbers and wish G4tv would get off their knees so I can go back to reading their articles......there are plenty other (BETTER) games than MW2.

This is why Developers don't take the "Boycotters"seriously. Boycotting means you don't use it. Not Bi**h and moan about it.

There was a boycot, i never noticed.

But then i bought it as i wanted a change from MMORPG's for a bit and the last FPS i bought was Half Life 2 and bought MW2 as it's predecessor was good.

So not only do PC gamers not understand what boycott means they're a bunch of cheaters as well

I wouldn't put it past Bowling to say this just to stir the bee's nest some more. Assuming for a moment it is true I fear the precedent everyone set by accepting the removal of features and a 60$ PC price tag.

At least we still have Bioware and Valve who understand the community modding efforts make their games better.

    In Valve We Trust.

Wow, all that whining and it still outsells CoD4? All those PC flamers on G4 the past month or 2 end up getting it anyways. Nice guys.

    As Jake said: "Well done."
