Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.
Last week was a big one for lovers of zombie slaying (aka everyone), as Left 4 Dead 2, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and the PlayStation One classic Resident Evil 2 (via digital download for the PlayStation 3) were all released. I haven’t checked out Darkside Chronicles yet, and I can’t tell you the last time I played RE2, but I think it’s safe to say that the vibe and play style of these three games are drastically different. But more specifically, they each contain very different kinds of zombies. The undead of L4D2 are agile and extremely quick. The living dead of the RE games are for the most part your traditional shambling brain-seekers that generate terror because you never sure if you have enough ammo to take all of them out before they gnaw off your face.
And that leads me to this question: Which type of zombie do you prefer to slay? Are you an action-zombie fan or a survival-horror zombie fan? Do you like them both equally, since they provide different gaming experiences? Where do you see the zombie genre headed in the future? There’s no doubt that L4D is a brilliant franchise that is capable of generating untold amounts of stress, enjoyment and terror, but how many more iterations can that formula sustain before it starts to lose its effectiveness?

I would like to do it like on Shaun Of The Dead. Best zombie ever made.

big fan of the slow-shuffeling kind, but that's because I read Zombie Survival Guide and that's what they put me too.
The Emperor's Champion
Slow necromancy zombies. When Hell is full the dead shall over run the Earth. The ideal Apocalypse.
Just fun for everyone ^_^

Does it really matter? a zombie can catch you no matter what. because its always that person that got infected and knew it and didn't tell anybody so when they die in the little safe room and turn into a zombie you and the the black guy (thats usually me) are screwed.

Which is scarier: faces hordes of the undead or having three untrained
d!ckholes behind you, running around with automatic weapons?
The real threat in the zombie apocolypse is going to be friendly fire.

If we are talking about surviving a zombie outbreak i would prefer slow zombies bc they are easy to handle but no matter what i would still use my trusty zombie survival guide

I like the traditional zombie or Romero style how ever you define slow, stupid and in large numbers zombies. I still like the fast moving zombie/infected that been put into movies and games because they are more scary but I just like traditional or new and improved. I do have to say that several of the "zombies" in Resident Evil and L4D are so far out there I wonder why they are even considered zombies or are part of the genre.

I love the fresh, fast and quick infected of the Left 4 Dead series, they have always appeared to me to be the most scary in the movies. When I have plenty of weapons and ammo to take care of thousands of zombies, it just makes everything quite better. There's really not a story to the Left 4 Dead series, but does it really need one? You've got a gun, then you've got a zombies coming after you, I really don't need a back story to explain what I need to do.

Honestly, I'd rather kill the old RE type of zombies. A. They're slow B. I'm chubby. Put those together and that means a higher survival rate for me. Haha.

My favorite type of zombie to slay would be those from Dead Rising. I know they may not be the most vicious kind like those found in L4D or RE series, but in my mind, the zombies from Dead Rising is how zombies are supposed to be; massive in numbers and short on intellect. Plus, the game was oodles of fun carving through hordes and endless numbers of the undead. The choice of weapons was also astounding. Using a lawnmower or car has to be my favorite way of killing zombies.

at Buzerker74- actually that was part of the core game mechanic in the original Res Evil games, it was almost always better to run through a section than fight when possible, thats why the old 3d type controls worked so well. They make you feel like you were in a nightmare- You know the feeling where you just can't react fast enough to save your self from inevitable doom? running through jello maybe?

Well for me the scarier zombies have always been the slow moving ones. They represent a literal and figurative meaning on how your going to die. The figurative one being the scariest for me in that no matter where you go or how many you kill they will get you "slowly" increasing that sense of dread and how death will eventually reach you no matter what you do. While the fast infected can still be scary just not as much.

Iguess the other Morning Hangover posted at around six was a mistake as they've taken it off, shame, too, as thanksgiving travel games as a subject for discusion is actually a lot more entertaining to me than OMG what kind of zombie do you like to kill? Really I would have never guessed the answer would be the ones in the most currently popular zombie game. And is it just me or is this niche-genre of gaming starting to get really overvrowded with top down left 4 dead Knockoffs. I mean I loved 28 weeks later as much as anyone else, I even have it on bluray, but c'mon have some originality please, game designer and publisers! sigh- I guess they only go where the money is. Lo-com-denom anyone...

After playing RE5 I love the fast Zombies all the way. With speed from the enemies it eliminates devs using tank controls. I have been fighting an addiction of L4D2 and losing terribly.

Slow zombies. I know in some universes, the fast zombie fits the tone for whatever the creator is trying to make, but for me, nothing is quite as disturbing as a group of a slow moving wall of meat that will slowly track you down no matter where you go. The 'frightening' factor of Fast moving zombies doesn't really change when you add more of them. Three running zombies are pretty much the same scary factor as one running zombie, or ten. But, slow zombies... it just keeps on getting worse and worse.
So... deffinately slow zombies.

I totally agree with 9000. But even TRUE reanimated living dead wouldn't need to be slow like hoss70 says. Rigormortis actually isn't permanent. After a while the corpse would be just as limber as it was just after death. If someone with more biological education could back me up here. My wife learned this when she was in the police academy and told me about it. It apparently helps determine time of death in an investigation.
In any case the fast zombies are scarier for me but I like the Romero ones as well. Between the two I would hope for the slow ones simply because theres a better chance for survival.

I like the L4D zombies in L4D, but if I would prefer to have regular zombies in a survival-type game.
