Sony Finally Launches The PlayStation 2...In Brazil

Sony Cuts The PlayStation 2 Price To $99.99

It might be nine years late, but Sony has finally gotten around to releasing the PlayStation 2…in Brazil…for around $465. Not only is that almost five times the cost of a new PS2 here in the United States, but, as Edge Online reports, the games will cost between $55 and $66.

While I couldn’t be happier for all those Brazilian gamers who will now get the chance to experience some of the greatest games ever made for the first time, that price tag will clearly put the console beyond the reach of many potential purchasers. On the plus side, Brazil’s already thriving piracy business is about to have a fantastic holiday season.

Im a proud Brazilian videogamer, who has a 360 and PS3... and I follow G4 via itunes for 3 years or so... (sorry if my english isnt correct)

Sony is making a huge mistake with PS2 here, the price tag is ludicrous... 450 US dollars for a PS2 is almost the same as the new PS3 Slim, witch may cost around 550-600 US dollars.

No one heres dream about PS2 anymore, we are at the same level in games as you, guys. I bought my CODMW2 at the launch day, 11/10/09; I can only tell you that Sony is too slow, we have 360s (imported via Microsoft) since 2007 - its not cheap too, but at least is one vg from de current generation...

All this insane talk about the PS2 launch makes everysingle Brazilian videogamer sad...

    Regards,

Sony has officially gone insane. 400 Bucks for a PS2, which is now what 60 bucks? and the games are like a price of a blue ray disc? Absolute insanity....

I lived in Brazil for two years, way down in the southern state called Rio Grande do Sul. Even in the small cities of 10-20,000 people every little kid has already played every version of FIFA since '02. They all know what Playstation 2 is. This isn't anything new. Some kids in big cities like So Paulo and Rio already have 360's and Live accounts.

There are a lot of people who buy a PS2 or 360 and set it up in their garage for the whole neighborhood to play. Kids come in with pay about two Reais, which is a little more than a dollar, for 30 minute of game time. It's actually pretty sweet because they put together some awesome tourneys and what not.

So, just realize that this is nothing new. They know all of the Playstation Classics. They've beaten every Resident Evil game five times over. They'll kick your butt in FIFA, and not just because they are friggin' money at soccer anyhow. There are some good gamers down there. A new console every Christmas just isn't in the cards for them, but they still know what a PS2 is.

    Falou.

SOME Brazilian women are the hottest in the world, but they're usually the ones that are a large part European. I'd say that the highest proportion of seriously hot chicks comes from eastern Europe (for whatever weird reason).

Okay My soul hurts for the Brazilian's kids and grown ups are talkin about how much better the PS3 is, compared to the 360, and vice versa. They're getting a system that's super-duper old to us. Can't we just donate PS2's to Brazil. Thats Rediculous. But Hey God of War 1 & 2/ Devil may Cry 1, and 3

@Deultra: It's sad that the people of Brazil have to pay so much to get some form of entertainment. Sony should have launched the PS2 a while ago (to Brazil). Not friggin' now -__-

I was in Brazil, in August this year- I was playing on my cousin's PS2 xD I suppose that makes his illegal. Also, just by looking at his games - I knew right there, that some form of piracy was involved.

I am a Brazilian. Now lets talk.

Rush: I have a PS2 since 2001, and a Xbox360 since last year. And I already played COD MW2, and I can tell you I am not offended, after all I am not a drug dealer.

Poker:- The reason the price is so high is because of the high taxes. About 60 to 80 on the product. Here games and consoles get the classification as luxury and as such has one of the higher taxes on them. Also, if MS and Sony, can take a hit selling consoles in the EUA, and other rich country s, here, they make money, not much, by selling consoles. That is one of the reasons that piracy is so big. Also, if we buy from Ebay, anything over 50 dollars, we have to pay a huge tax, that practically doubles the price.

A PS2 in places that import is around, 180 dollars. And a Xbox360 is around 700 to 800 dollars. A PS3 may cost up to 900 dollars. Games cost is also high, a PS3 game cost more than 100 dollars. Only way to pay less, is to ask the seller on eBay to lie about the cost, and put below 50 dollars, also put as a gift. And even so with shipping, and the lower pay. Here the minimal wage is around 250 dollars. So yeah if you want to know why piracy is so big here, now you know. Is of course, not a solution, but a reaction, of a people that makes a lot less money, and have to pay a lot more, for entertainment
