Everyone's caught up with the holiday releases, right? No one's fallen behind? We've all finished Dragon Age: Origins and are contemplating a second run as an elf? Lies! All lies! But as the last week stocked with the year's biggest releases finally passes us by, the Feedback crew headed into the studio to discuss the latest news of the industry and both Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin's Creed II.
What you have to look forward to from Adam Sessler, myself, Andrew Pfister and Abbie Heppe:
- Activision announced big sales numbers for Modern Warfare 2 ($550 million!), the game was reported to have been banned in Russia (but wasn't) and hackers have already showed up and started adding features Infinity Ward decided to take away (can you say...dedicated servers?).
- Pandemic Studios has officially closed its doors, but the brand and its games live on. What does this mean for the future of Mercenaries and Electronic Arts' overall strategy?
- Andrew reviewed Assassin's Creed II but Adam's been just as obsessed with Ubisoft's latest sprawling epic, while Abbie and I try to play catch up on what we've missed out on.
- Valve's zombie horde is back in Left 4 Dead 2, so I used Feedback to help further make the case for why the sequel is justified as something more than just downloadable combat.
- A reader asks why we play games, especially ones we finish all the way to the end.

User Question:
I have recently started a gaming magazine with a few fellow friends/gamers at my university. One of the main sections so far is focusing on single player gamers, and their disenchantment with the gaming industry. What are you opinons of the snowballing trend of the industry to focus wholely on multiplayer aspects with little to no enthusiasm for the long forgotten single player experience in ALL genres.

I just wanted to point out that I watch Feedback for Adam's references. I get sad when he doesn't do them. The man is so very smart and I like looking up stuff like the guy in his last one! Keep up the great work!

Pandemic only has the Mercenaries series? For shame, Patrick. What about Battlezone?

Question for next show: "Should My Christmas Be An Xmas?"
Knowing what games have recently come out, current prices, and the state of the economy, what console would you most readily suggest? Usually, I don't use whatever money I get for Christmas right away, but save it for something big that I really want. I would like to get an Xbox 360, but the DLC is expensive, and Xbox-Live costs 40 dollars a year to maintain, not to mention the initial investment which will set me back about 450 dollars. I think that this is an important question for those people still sitting on the fence (if there are any). With an original Xbox(that no longer works) and about 20 games, should I go with the 360, start over with a PS3, or just stick with my Laptop and games like Imperial Glory and Age of Empires II? Thank you all, you guys have an awesome show, and I feel smarter every time I walk away. Keep up the good work,
Kyle

While I do agree with most of the comments about AC2, I had a different experience with the ending (or well roughly last 20%) . The turning point for me was later in the game when you "learn" (through a pop-up) a new wall move. After missing the bar for quite a few tries, the other free run problems just seemed to occur more or at least that was how I perceived it. It was at that point that the game lost my interest.
The only other part I had a problem with was the ending. While it was not the most telegraphed ending, a surprise ending does not always denote a good ending. The best way that I can describe my feeling without spoilers would be, for me a filling ending requires actually following the idea or ideas of the story up to date. To me it was as if we were riding down a nice little story railroad then the train jumped the tracts and headed down a dirt road. I had always just thought of the bad science in AC as just a way to drive the story narrative. If it is more (much like it becomes) I have a harder time just accepting the science or being given just a token explanation of the situation. That also disinterested me from the game and story.
Also it would have been better if those lines from building to building were on the same plane as the last of the overhangs. Its really frustrating to be doing a race, a timed mission or just running from guards and believe they are linked and you end up just falling off the roof to grab the overhang instead of running on the wire to the next building. At least that was a frustrating experience to me.

this holiday season has a slew of great games that i am going to buy, Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin's creed 2, but notice something about all these games. they're all sequels. I'm not saying that i dont like new IP's like Brutal Legend or the Saboteur, but with all the other tried and true games coming out i doubt i'll get around to buying them. so my question is this, you hear a lot that developers have trouble getting people to buy new IP's. Yet, i dont beleive it's so much that it's something new that people are wary of, but rather, because there are other things that people are familiar with coming out at the same time. so why dont developers try maybe releasing a new ip during the summer, a time thats usually pretty dry when it comes to finding new games to play. this seems like a pretty obvious idea to me, i was wondering what your perspective is on it.

I feel sorry for the Command and Conquer staff. Joe Kucan may have to find a real job now! C&C was one of my first games I played hardcore (yes a PC game). I did successfully boycot the PC version of the game of Modern Warfare 2. As for the PC people on Modern Warfare 2. On several of my posts I said we are non factors. And this video pretty much nailed it in the coffin. Most people will make a complaint (and it can be very valid), but if you give them your money you are validating their views.
I remained honest on the PC side of this game. And I truely believe that Modern Warfare 2 will be model of many future games. So be warned computer users you have put the nail on your own coffins!

Great job everyone! The Feedback has quickly become my favorite game related podcast. I am glad to see someone discussing games in an intelligent manner, yet still making it fun and entertaining.

Holiday break is one of my favorite times of the year because of video games. It's been a little over a year since I actually got into gaming, and I used to be infatuated with racing games like ATV or burnout or Max and The tony hawk series. Now that I'm more interested in more FPS games I'm looking forward to just splurging and buying a bunch of games. Dirt 2, MW2, Fallout 3, Borderlands are all titles I'll be picking up and I can't wait. I feel like I'm becoming less social and everyone pity's me when I go home and play for maybe 4 hours at a time, but during holiday break I feel like I'm spending it right because I'm still young and I don't have many responsibilities until school pick s up.

I did actually just want to say that I really like what you guys are doing with Feedback. It's great to listen to you guys have a real adult discussion about videogames and the gaming world in general. I think it's good the gamers, and actually I think the industry as a whole having real indepth discussions regarding this subject matter. Especially with all the so called controversies that stir up every so often. Having people who are actually able to speak on the issue directly because they actually know what they are talking about is a breath of fresh air.
Side note #2 I think Adam would have done a great job going up against the right wing talking heads on fox news about the MW2 terrorist scene.
Just wanted to say, love what you've done so far and keep up the great work!
