Electronic Arts are no strangers to expanding hit franchises into comic book and/or animated film form. Mass Effect and Dead Space are two of the most recent series to receive this treatment, and now it's been announced that Visceral Games' upcoming hellish action title Dante's Inferno will also be added to this list next year.

Similar to the animated short-film collection Halo Legends, Dante's Inferno: The Animated Epic will include six vignettes created by nine renowned animation studios, including the studios behind such films as Ghost in the Shell, Blood the Last Vampire, Tales of the Black Freighter and Samurai Champloo. The shorts appear to offer unique interpretations of the events that play out in Visceral Games’ unique take on Dante Alighieri’s classic epic poem. Depending on your views of what Visceral has done to the famed source material, you’ll most likely either totally dig the shorts, or be even more dubious of Visceral’s creative direction  for the game.

You’ll be able to pass judgment when both the game and the film are released in Feb. 2010. To get you in the mood, here's the new trailer:

I cannot wait for them to ruin a truly amazing piece of literature. Dante's Inferno is the first part of the divine comedy (it's a trilogy but I wouldn't expect them to make games/anime out of Purgatorio or Paradiso). It was Dante's exploration of his musings about the after life and filled with social commentary/politics of the early 1300s. The story in this anime and game is a complete butchering of the original piece. The few details that stay almost in tact are: Dante's name, that he is guided by Virgil, Dante's lover/wife is named Beatrice, there are 9 levels of hell. Dante never fights his way through the depths of hell. He is led by Virgil because in his musings he ventured off into hell and the only way through it is to go through all the levels of hell. He is a passive observer, having no influence on his surrounds.

I cannot wait for kids in middle school and high school to watch the anime/ play the video game rather than actually spend time reading the book. Or even reading the sparknotes for that matter. They would be better educated reading the sparknotes/cliffnotes rather than playing to the game to get an accurate retelling of the Inferno.

Yes, I find the idea of battling through the depths of hell to save a loved one a very good idea for a game. It sounds like a kick@$$ hack and slash similar to Ninja Gaiden (probably not nearly as difficult). But it disgusts me that they are going to ruin a nearly 700 year old piece of literature.

And to all those who disagree with me or will flame me, although I bet few of you decide to read this far into my post, you are clearly ignorant of the actual story behind the story of the Inferno. You probably also thought that Beowulf was one of the greatest movies of 2007. As an action flick, yeah it was pretty good. But it completely destroyed the epic poem that is Beowulf. Don't get me started on that. And, according to all the reviews, the game was even worse.

So it turns out that the transferring of different works of art to different mediums (video games to movies, books to movies, books to games..etc) doesn't work out well. I am a gamer and I pray for the day for a good video game movie to come out. But with awful movies like "Gamer" and "Doom" I don't see that happening anytime soon (although the PoP movies looks promising). I'm tired of legitimate pieces of art (again, books, movies, games...) being bastardized (please excuse my vulgarity) in order for a cor a company to make some coin.

So if you haven't figured it out yet: No, I am not looking forward to this anime or game, and I refuse to support it in anyway.

Actually that looked pretty good I take that back. But they should give dante and that chick an italian accent so it seems authentic.

I think the game looks awesome, but I hate it when they make the cutscenes some dumb cartoon. They have time throw that crappy anime cutscenes and just use the game engine to make them, thus the story wont feel like spongebob.
